Again I know this sucks and I'm not happy saying it, but we decided to use the graphics card for the blue selection squares, and if its not fast enough there's really no simple way around it for now.
Well it sucks that the minimum system specs are there for a reason and if you have a video card greater than even the recomended system specs this spacebar issue is still a problem. Didn't you guys at least test it on an older video card which is above the system specs just to make issues like this not a problem.
I really do hope there will be a fix for this, why would you add something like this to the graphics card portion and not the RAM?
All I'll say is that I seriously agree. It saddens me... and I'd also really like to see a fix for this.

I have an hp dv4 laptop with a geforce 9200m gs, 256mb ddr2, surely this should be good enough???
No.
Here's the thing about graphics cards: the first number, in this case 9xxx, mostly indicates the architecture - i.e. what sorts of things the Graphics Processing Unit is basically compatible with (e.g. DirectX 9). It means nothing whatsoever about the processing power, that is, how many and how complicated the 3D rendering it can throw around is. Yes, if it's a newer series like the 9xxxs then Moore's Law indicates that they can put more punch in, but that doesn't mean they will.
Which brings us to the second number, in this case 200, which is what usually indicates how the performance level compares to the other cards in its series. Even without knowing exactly how the series is being numbered, 2 is clearly the low range of 1-9. That should have been a warning bell if you were buying this laptop to play games. (And you have to be doubly careful about laptop cards where size, heat, and power consumption need to really be kept down; sometimes the laptop version will be named after a desktop card but not actually be as powerful.)
In future, I'd recommend at least eyeballing something like the Tom's Hardware Graphics Hierarchy Chart when buying a video card/laptop containing one.

This is good. At least you were straight with us and let us know where the short coming likely is. I hadn't realized that the targetting reticle was in the graphics processor and not the main processor. Like others, I'm playing on a laptop with a mediocre card. Only thing that disturbs me is that I didnt change any of the graphics settings that the game set automatically. they aren't at minimum, but they are what the game thought was optimum.
Would this also be the cause of the slow mouse in the circuit hacking mini game? Using the graphics processor for the mouse has never been a good idea in any game that I've played that used the same. The graphics processor is typically slower than the main processor and is typically not optimized for mouse movement and control let alone interfacing with the operating systems mouse. There is a fair lag gap between the GPU and the CPU and something as sensitive as the mouse should always remain at the heart of the CPU for the best control and speed.
Anyway, I am glad you let us know about that. I will further adjust my graphics settings in order to get the targetting reticle to work properly. Thanks!

According to the hierarchy chart, my video card is on the same level as an ATI Mobility 9700 (64-bit). So I shouldn't have problems right??
On the Toms chart, the ATI Mobility 9700 is five tiers below the bare-minimum ATI Radeon x1600 PRO. Just as the 9200m is five tiers below the bare-minimum Nvidia GeForce 6800.

Will lowering the resolution in Windows improve ME2's performance? I also have the monitor hooked up through an HDMI cable. Will a different type of connection improve things? These questions may be really stupid, but I don't understand the interrelation between windows settings and the game's settings, or if there is one that is relevant here.

1) Make your window size smaller
2) Play in windowed mode
3) Some graphics drivers will let you reduce the quality in the settings
4) Close all other programs
For some people, different levels will run faster or slower.
Again I know this sucks and I'm not happy saying it, but we decided to use the graphics card for the blue selection squares, and if its not fast enough there's really no simple way around it for now.
1) It's at 640x480 resolution
2) In windowed mode
3) Also, I've now reduced every quality setting on my graphics driver
4) Plus, I have no programs running
And I still can't get the blue targeting box to show up despite trying to use work-arounds (esc trick, reloading). This is so disappointing... really it is.
[sighs] Time to find a new system to play the game on...

That's way below spec. Bioware can't make the game run on a video chip that simply doesn't have the necessary power.

IMO, that is a gross overstatement. I would say it's far less than "half", because that is how much the video CARD contributes to performance, and a 9100 isn't a "Card" at all.Psyrex01 wrote...
My system is half way decent.
There simply isn't anyone's onboard video chip that works "respectably" below the level of the ATI Radeon 4200 chip, and *it* isn't going to offer a truly satisfactory experience.although I only have the Geforce 9100 (256ddr2), When I play game full settings there is no lag / stuttering (fraps says 7fps) - targetting not available(blue box), I then killed all the visuals and lowered screen to 800x600 (fraps reports 19-23fps) - targetting is now available but the graphics look like crap. I've tried turning things back up 1 at a time, no matter what I touch targetting goes away. Example: add bloom (targetting goes away - fraps reports 15-17fps), take that away and add 1024x768 (targetting goes away - fraps reports 15fps). Hopr this helps whomever
.
You have no reason in the world at all for anger at anyone other than yourself (for ignoring the requirements). Compared to that Geforce 9100 chip, the primitive POS chip you have is four generations older and one twentiesth part as good as the ATI Radeon 4200 chip, which is below the requirements.Sand68 wrote...
AMD Dual Core 2.30 GHz w/nvidia 6150se /3.00 GB of ram. Fps is 8. So I'm hopelessly stuck - And quite angry I might addIt’s hard to believe out of all the bright wonderful people with bioware that someone doesn’t have a solution other than what has already been mentioned.
P. S. Although this thread had gotten to be eight days old, it is the one that a recent new arrival had ignored out of several that he found with the search function, and added new replies to -- it seems to have covered the situation, while ending without a response to the pair of contributors whose quotes appear above.

No one can answer anything for you based on what you wrote. It's the third sticky from the top in that (this) forum that covers what is needed, and the part telling the noobs what data we need from them starts this way:aserath wrote...
Same problem here. Space works on the "press any key" screen but no where else. It seems to work if you hit ESC and then space right after but playing the whole game like that is NOT cool.
(Chris Priestley's Fill in the blanks instructions -- you may ignore the question about what game is involved, however):
"If you don’t find a similar problem already reported, consider starting a new thread. Note that most of this information can be obtained by using the game’s Configuration Utility, which is available by pressing the [Configure] button from the game’s launcher:"
Let's pretend he wrote that for, and also stickied it up at the top, in both places, shall we? There's no need to ask which game you are describing a problem for, in the DA Forum, and now that ME-1 is removed from the ME-2 Tech Discussions Forum, Chris could edit his post to remove his first question anyway.
It's possible, however, that you may prefer this other format, instead:
social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/106/index/1537629
It won't hurt to review this Bioware employee's comments about poor control system interaction, either:

After resetting my keys, i can select code segments, and can look around again while pausing the game for having the Command HUD. After changing my keys i can select code segments with my new key, but cant look around, and thats very annoying, becouse its crucial for giving orders for squadmates... Again, after resetting keys to default value, i can do everything...
I didnt notice any problem, until i installed the 1.01 patch... It is weird, becouse i have the game installed for more then a month and never had this problem. This is my 8th or 9th playtrough and never any problem, and the patch 1.01 supposed to solve this problem, not to cause it...
I have a core2 duo e6750 cpu(2,66ghz) 2gb ram with an nvidia 7600gt card on a genuine Windows XP 32bit professional OS. My fps is around 30 most of the time( i have fraps booting with my os - so i constantly have the counter on my overlay). I didnt do any change on the game except killing the mouse acceleration and changing mouse sensitivity. I can storm aswell ...
Edit: reinstalled the game and the issue is gone. But this means i wont install patch 1.01 again. If any future dlc would need it , then i will be in trouble...

You are trying to overwork an old video card too hard. Drop your screen resolution more. That video card is four years old, and about to drop clean out of Mainline into Low End. It had a decent core speed in its day, but that day is now long gone: http://www.gpureview...1=385&card2=180
i know its 4 years old, and even 4 years earlier it was a low-mid card. but if something works with default keys, and wont work with remapped keys, then dont tell me my vga is wrong (im going to buy an Ati 5750 soon anyway)

I have Vista 64-bit OS, and I was getting inconsistent use of the spacebar. Specifically for, ME2, I turned on Compatibility mode for XP SP2, and now the spacebar is working consistently.

Occasionally, as with the owner of the Geforce 7600 GT, a card that is basically the same performance level as the official minimum can be hampered by something, perhaps a bad driver, and have slow frame rates when it should be doing better.
