In terms of Dragon Age games, just barely above DA2. It's more complete and that's the reason why, but the gameplay oversimplification was unnecessary, the equipment, loot, and reward systems are total garbage, the crafting is painfully limited, and the port (360) is absolute rubbish. The skill tree is probably the only thing I actually like of the gameplay changes, but then Bioware cut both of their own feet off by limiting it to eight active skills and removing the radial menu. Because we really need focus skills eating up slots when you can only use them once about a half hour or so.

Other than that, BG2's at the top, DA2's at the bottom and everything else falls into place somewhere in the middle.

I rate it right there with BG1, & BG2 and slightly above DAO. I still rank DA2 above NWN's single player campaign.

1. Mass Effect 2

2. Knights of the Old Republic

3. Dragon Age Inquisition

4. Mass Effect

5. Dragon Age: Origins

6. Dragon Age II

7. Mass Effect 3

DA:I is a truly great game. I like ME2 and KotOR better by rule, but it has earned its place. I like all the games on this list, with the first 5 being great IMO. DAII was a good game that was flawed by gameplay mechanics and the hamfisted presentation of conflict in the story, which DA:I really improved on. ME3 has a lot of problems, specifically with its writing and presentation - it's the only game on here that misses the mark for me. Not that it's truly bad, but much of the writing is presented in too much of a forced, contrived, patched manner. There's a variety of reasons for it.

ME1=DAO > ME2 = KOTOR >>> DAI > Jade Empire > DA2 (though I've not played it in four years now so it's hard to judge) > ME3

1) Dragon Age Origins          (Even better with Awakening)

2) Mass Effect 3                   (Hated the ending but loved the combat! I have all the DLC's - Without them it would rank below ME2!)

3) Mass Effect 2                   (It had more companions and variety than ME3. But the combat and the powers were not as good as ME3.)

4) Dragon Age Inquisition     (It could take the first place very easily if it got fixed! But that WON'T happen, right Mr. Laidlaw?!!)

5) Mass Effect                      (I played ME2 and then ME3. Some time later I got around to ME1. Ljs, I will enjoy it when the HD-Trilogy comes out ;))

6) Dragon Age 2                   (Gut-wrenching experiences tend to be remembered <_< ... trashed it once, bought it twice, cursed it a 1000 times!)

I just realized my top three for mechanics contain my least favorite for characters and story in each series. Maybe one day the two shall intersect?

What the heck; I'm counting Awakening as its own game. My list, based solely on characters and story:

  1. ME2

  2. DAA

  3. DAI

  4. DA2

  5. ME

  6. DAO

  7. KotOR

  8. ME3

I've also played Jade Empire but can't remember anything about it.

Mass Effect 2 - Best beginning and best end of any game I have ever played. Gives me plenty of chills. Great story and characters. Amazing music. Entering afterlife for the first time. M-920 Cain. Great DLC's: Arrival(blowing up the alpha relay and killing 300,000 batarians) Lair of the Shadowbroker. Overloard Kasumi Goto - Stolen memory

Neverwinter Nights - Unlimited adventure. Multiplayer.

Dragon Age Origins

Mass Effect 1

SWTOR

Mass Effect 3

Dragon Age Inquisition

Dragon Age 2

strengths and weaknesses of individual games are so variable to make a direct comparison arbitrary and may change from day to day

So instead I use a scale of 0-10 where 10 means "as good as it gets" and 5 means "okay but nothing special"

Star Wars:KOTOR  9/10

Jade Empire  9/10

Mass Effect  9/10

Dragon Age:Origins 10/10

Mass Effect 2:  8/10

Dragon Age 2:  6/10

Mass Effect 3:  6/10

Dragon Age Inquisition:  9/10 (provisional as only 55 hours in - maybe halfway)

Baldur’s Gate 2 (favourite game of all time)

KOTOR

Jade Empire (very close behind KOTOR)

Baldur’s Gate

Mass Effect 3

Dragon Age: Inquisition

Mass Effect 1

Dragon Age: Origins

Mass Effect 2

Dragon Age 2

Neverwinter Nights

Not counting SWTOR as I haven’t played much of it or MDK2 because it’s so darn different to the rest.  Never played Shattered Steel or the Sonic one.  Inquisition could move up or down as I continue, but right now I’m finding it the best of the trilogy

I'll list all ten Bioware games. Never played the original BG - only as a mod for NWN2 so I won't include it.
Apart from BG2 and DAI finished them at least once(DA2, ME2, SWTOR) and the rest, many many times.

Since I suck at describing in details why I like or dislike something I'll just post brief description why and what I liked in particular game. In addition I'll throw in my personal genre and setting classification for each one of them.

From best to worst, The first two are tied very closely. 1 - 6 are good games, the rest aren't.

  • Jade Empire (Action Adventure) (Wuxia)
Perfect mix of gameplay and story. Excelent characters, very engaging and fun combat. Best setting of all of the Bioware games. I rarely pay much attention to the story but this one is brilliant plus it has the best soundtrack from all of the BW games. Dynasty Warriors with story and companions - Best of The best.

  • Knight Of The Old Republic (RPG) (Science Fiction)
Wow! Star Wars + RPG + DnD rule set. Even if it had the worst story I would've loved it, but it didn't. Unlike it's sequel there was not much politics and philosophy themes in it, and since these two are most boring and useless things humanity ever created(IMHO) it is clearly better one of the two games. Lightweight story with great twist (same as Jade Empire), excellent mechanics and great characters.

  • Neverwinter Nights (RPG + PnP Simulator) (Fantasy)
Probably same resons as the above. Since I am not demanding when it comes to story I even liked the original campaign. It is lower than KOTOR because the characters and companions weren't as good and because of the setting - SW beats any fantasy setting hands down. Apart from that everything else is great. Again great implementation of DnD with 3D graphics.

  • Dragon Age: Origins (RPG) (Fantasy)
Sad truth is, Bioware is unable to create good ruleset with excelent mechanics. They dropped DnD and tried to create everything from scratch by themselves - the result was not bad but nothing exciting either. Bearable mechanics with great story and brilliant characters (Alistair being one of the best Bioware's characters). This mix made this game very very good with great replayability.

  • Mass Effect (Action RPG/Shooter) (Science Fiction)
Some meaningless story and setting (from my POV) to fill the gaps between excellent fire fights and countless hours of fooling around in MAKO (half of my game play time was probably driving it through every possible location on every map, fun times). Apart from that interesting characters, not as good as in the games above but interesting enough. All of that made this game very solid.

  • Baldurs Gate 2 (RPG) (Fantasy)
Well, I won't hide that - I am not crazy about BG. It was more of a DnD combat simulator for me than anything else. Good characters but not that much interesting. The story - what story ? Not that there is not any - it just didn't catch any of my attention at all. Never finished it despite playing it for more than 100 hours. Anyway solid implementation of DnD rules, few interesting quests here and there. Good encounters and boss fights, like Kangaxx, Firkraag, Mind Flayers etc. Solid title overall.

  • Star Wars the Old Republic (MMORPG) (Science Fiction)
    Star Wars setting.

  • Dragon Age 2 (RPG / Action-RPG) (Fantasy)
Varric. Brothel. The guy at the tavern talking about everything getting simpler and simpler. What an irony. So true so true.

  • Dragon Age Inquisition (Action RPG) (Fantasy)

  • Mass Effect 2 (Action Adventure/Shooter)

Keep posting guys. Try to add some desriptions of what and why. Always interesting to see others opinions and POVs, dry lists aren't so much interesting.

DA: Origins

Knights of the old Republic

Mass Effect 2

Mass Effect 1

Mass Effect 3

DA: Inquisition

DA 2

Main reason why Mass Effect 3 is above Inquisition is because the combat wasn't as horribly boring as Inquisitions.

I bought Baldur's Gate on sale long after 16 bit (?) was outdated. It is my least favorite but stylish for what it was.

NWN OC -  First game. Reading between the lines I thought Bioware must be a cool company

NWN SOU - Deekin and I began a close and memorable companionship

NWN HOT - Deekin made me cry (really) with his bravery and loyalty

NWN MOB - Bought it but passed. Too dark

NWN SOZ - Terrific fun

NWN MOW - Played it a bit but put it off, would go back

never played DA or Mass Effect, but am interested now

ooops, NWN 2. loved the game, though the artificial reality of that seems remarkably removed in DA:I, at least for the most part

Hmmm lets see. I really don't know where to put Inquisition. I haven't finished it, am crawling through it at the moment. Even though there are a lot of aspects to the game that I think are really good, it just doesn't excite me because of the slow pacing. Below is the order of all their previous games. For pure enjoyment I would probably put it down the bottom of the second group even though I can see it is technically a better game than that.

ME3 (Multiplayer was superb, main story rich with emotion, ending was disappointing but game was still great)

ME2 (Very polished mesh of gameplay and story, perfectly paced)

BG2 (Original at the time, charming with great banter and storytelling)

KOTOR (Very immersive, great story, well paced if a little short)

SWTOR (Unlike other games on list, compromises to stories needed to be made to be an mmo, but still had 8 good stories and eventually the gameplay became good, made me see why wow was so popular because I could never get into that game)

DA2 (Unpolished with a range of bad and good things. I stil;l enjoyed the game a lot, I thought the story dlc was superb, and the characters wery amazing. Just reused dungeons and lack of finish arrrghh!!!)

DAO (Unfortunately too much of the story was spoiled before the release, very few surprises, gameplay only really worked in the lvl 6-12 range)

ME1 (Good story and brand new world, crap gameplay, reused interiors, tedious vehicle gameplay)
JE (Didn't really like the gameplay. The story was pretty good but quite short. It did have a certain charm I enjoyed)

BG (It was OK, story was decent but gameplay was pretty terrible)
NWN (never finished it, terrible gameplay and presentation)

None of these are bioware games. Obsidian did NWN2 and its retail expansions, another group dud mysteries of westgate.

ME1

ME2

DA Origins

Jade Empire

DA 2

DA Inquisition

SW KOTOR

SW TOR

Love sci-fi so Mass Effects right up my alley.  Not a Star Wars fan but I liked KOTOR (KOTOR II is better, though).  I wish they'd make a new Jade Empire and soon.  I love the far east theme as opposed to the overly done ancient European thing.

The most important roleplaying I do is in how I interpret what the NPCs do. When Cassandra says something to the Inquisitor, what conclusions does the Inquisitor draw in that moment? How does the Inquisitor feel?

Making these decisions in real time is effectively impossible if I'm not confident that I know what the PC's current state of mind is. And if there's any risk that the PC's behaviour will surprise me, I clearly don't know her state of mind.

I found that the renegade interrupts worked quite well for the reaction that I wanted - but then I didn't generally think that the cue was not informative enough, since I think of actions at a very high level (e.g. neutralise this threat). The only interrupt I recall completely shocking me was the guard in ME2 that got thrown out a window. That was nuts.

The less said about the OC the better. The only reason I don't think I've blocked out NWN like Highlander II is HoTU which is really an epic campaign that was my favourite D&D adventure until MoTB (and then jumped back to my favourite once I got trolled by the MoTB ending).
