I think we need a part of the forum called 'speculation' or something where griping doesn't fit. The constant complaining in every part of the forum is both depressing and undeserved. Sure, criticism is important, but there's no escaping it and it gives a very false impression of opinions outside this forum. I'd like to discuss the game without wading through quite so much of this. How is this thread productive?

You made one mistake: Assuming that people are TRYING to be productive.

Piling on and picking pepper out of fly sh*t is sport here in BSN.

I find any developer's forums are like this anymore for any reason that a person would like to use as a reason for it, when I really want a person's opinion on a game I will look at many different sources and try and find something that doesn't feel like I require a hazmat suit to wear.

Apparently a lot of people love it. I'm not surprised since I visit forums outside the BSN.

EA pays for reviews and whatever else. That is why it wins so many awards.

Especially for those Reader's choice awards. The worst part about EA is how I still don't have my cheque for not hating on the game.

It's so obvious EA does this - like how DA2 won all those GOTY awards.

with the competiton in the RPG market I would say not, Divinity Original Sin, Dragonfall:Directors Cut, Wasteland 2, Age of Decadence (and more I probably missed) all out this year, I would have expected some difference of opinion, but nope the big studio game has to win apparently.

There's no real competition. Divinity is just another ToEE or IWD style game. And however much you loved those games, they were never fondly remember on the scale of BG1 or BG2. Hell, PS:T was a commercial flop and it's the most beloved of all. And it's the anti-Divinity on every level and design choice.

You don't understand. DA2 didn't win because all the OTHER publishers got one over EA and paid the reviewers more. The theory is perfect because it can never be disproven.

It seems like there is a pattern to the tone of game chatter on any forum that applies to a great many games.  In the beginning, when everything is sunshine and roses, most people still feel like the game is fresh.  But over the weeks that follow, many pound so hard at a game that a sense of burnout overcomes them.  They become overly critical because they are probably growing tired of the same game.  It's a natural reaction.

Going back to the topic, the biggest problem with GOTY awards is that not only are they subjective, there are a great many more elements to judge than say, a movie or a music album.  Nobody is ever clear on the criteria being used, so it's probably coming down to a small group of individuals choosing what they liked.

The best games this year were all re-releases unfortunately. The Last of Us, GTAV, Kngdom Hearts 2.5: HD REmix, DA:I normally wouldnt win any GOTY awards, but in the absence of a truly magnificent game, it's up there. It being released  at the end of the year helps  too, it's still fresh in everyone's memory.

The only game better than DAI on that list was GTA5.

Nope. TLoU is the best game on that list. It does literally everything better than Inquisition. Characters, emotion, the VA, graphics, and the game is just a whole lot more fun to play. 200+ GOTY awards and counting.

Oh please get over yourself. If that was true than DA2 would have gotten awards.    Try harder.

DA2 won very few awards compared to Inquisiton.   LOL

People can get so hung up on this crap, who cares if some reviewer declares a game GOTY? By next christmas, half the games released this year will have GOTY editions on sale on Steam and Origin. It's just marketing nonsense. The only question that matters if YOU enjoyed the game.

Absolutely not. I get a lot of people love it. But no one will ever convince me the story is anything but trash.

Didn't you get the memo?...anything praising the game is obviously "paid for by EA" only the negative opinions are "honest"

So when do I get my check? Just askin'  ;)

It's almost like I have an opinion. It's one thing when a video game tries to just do a cheesy B-movie script. This is Bioware's bread and butter. They're not good stories in a critical sense, but they're fun for what they are and they've got interesting character writing.

But if a game is going to pretend that it's actually stepped into the world of critically acclaimed features, then it gets judged by that standard. And while it's not the pretentious and incoherent mess of BioShock Infinite, The Last of Us is an underwhelming and unimpressive collection of mundane clichés designed to elicit an emotional reaction.

Personally my GOTY list looks like this:

1) Shadow of Mordor

2) Walking Dead season 2

3) Wolfenstein (would be #2 if the ending wasn't very abrupt)

And then 4,5,6 would be between Dragon Age Inquisition, Shadowrun Returns and Wolf Among Us depending on if I'm in a mood for deep story or fun combat.

What I'm saying is that as videogames that came out this year, I think those are better and more deserving of the GOTY than DAI just from the top of my head. I haven't played every single game that has come out this year, my opinion is the same as other people here. DAI is good, is in my top 10 this year, but there are simply other games that rank higher on the list, hence the examples.

The logical answer to this is to create your own gaming/review site, and have your opinion be heard. Like, I legitimately don't know what more people want? That's ALL reviews are, people with opinions making their opinions heard -- same with GOTY awards, publications making their collective opinions on which was the best game of the year public. You don't agree with their choice? Fine, that's your opinion and you're entitled to it. It just reads like petulance and brattiness, the amount of people whining that they don't agree with some reviewer or publication's obviously SUBJECTIVE OPINION.

So I like this game. I really do. But game if the year? This must have been a real crap year for games. DAI is a good game. But not a game of the year kind of game. At least not for me.

Divinity: Original Sin was game of the year for gamespot.

Mass Effect's story is a cheesy B-movie script?

When Inquisition came out I was amazed by how little negative opinion was on the forum. Sure, there wasn't much praise either, but coming from here that's like we were declaring our undying love for Dragon Age Perfectquisition: Game of the Millennium. So I suspect most of us love the game, despite its flaws, as I do.

Six weeks later, now that we've thought of bad things to say about it (Inquisition makes DAII look like a god-tier game? Come ON), it's getting some more stick. We're notoriously critical here, with a reputation even in the gaming community at large.

I believe Dragon Age: Inquisition is the best AAA big-budget game of the year. It has masses of content; a great story (not BioWare's best ever, but great IMHO); a fun, decently tactical combat system; impressive mechanics; enormous replay value; grand scale and THE BEST characters BioWare has ever written. That's saying something, because I thought Mass Effect's cast was just about perfect.

Game of the Year is a flimsy award, because when comparing across genres and marking criteria it largely becomes a matter of preference. That said, I don't see how someone who was disappointed with DA2 or ME3 can be disappointed with Inquisition.

The Bioware forums are a lot more positive than other places I frequent. If you think this is critical go check RPGCodex and RPGWatch. In general, the games own forums are always among the most positive ones. So I think you're a bit off the mark there.

Nah, the general internet is pretty positive towards Inquisition. The Codex (which are critical towards all games) and Watch (who like to analyse all games to death) aside, it's much more positive than the reception it got here. Reddit's a pretty useful barometer, and even they are happy with Inquisition.

I think this game deserves it. What even came close? I guess the HD remake of Last of Us but that is a remake.
