Like I said, she is not using actual cockney rhyme, because no one would understand any of it. But the accent, the sentence structures, the "yeah" at the end of every sentence....it is very distinctly South East London.

I know she has a Cockney accent. I was saying that it's not too hard to understand :)

LOL I can understand how some people may find Sera's language foreign and difficult to follow.

That manner of speech is that of South East Londoners, often referred to as "cockneys" and they use cockney rhyming slang that is sometimes incomprehensible by those not familiar with their "dialect".

Sera's is not quite as severe, but that is the background of it. It originates from the part of the population in London that are less privileged and somewhat less educated.

[edit]

My credibility? I lived in London (South East) for 5 years.

Not quite - she uses some slang with a cockney accent ('innit' instead of 'isn't it' being a prime example) but most of the time she has a more nothern england accent. Not quite Geordie, not quite Brummie either, just a generic northern inflection.

The 2 things do not mix well, which is why she can be difficult to understand.

It's like reading an Irvine Welsh novel. You have to adopt the accent in your head to understand what is being said. But because she has a blend of two different British accents mixed in with some slang and lazy speech, that's not easy to do even for a native.

I understood her more on the 2nd play through, but still cringe every time she switches accents to get in the 'innit'.

I don't think it's the accent itself that's hard for people to understand...

I think it's more how she stops halfway through a sentence and then quickly shuts it off with her main point. She doesn't like long conversations, after all.

People have posted about her accent, saying that it's a mix of "north and south".

As much as I love the UK accent I'm not an expert on it. Regardless, her accent is delicious. I could listen to her all day and all night.

Yes, I also find it quite refreshing.

It would be impossible for anyone outside of the UK (and even those who have not lived in London) to pin-point Sera's accent accurately because it can get subtle. It took me a few years to distinguish all the different accents of which there is a surprisingly large range in such a tiny country. Still don't always get it right, but Sera's is pretty distinct.

Mmmmmm, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that. ;)

Disagree with which bit?

I have 35 years more than you in the area, just saying ;)

Sera approves of you relentlessly flirting with Scout Harding. So you should be fine. Unless you're not relentlessly flirting with Scout Harding. In which case what is wrong with you?

Yes, she does. It's the first time in my life where the woman I love actually approves of me hitting on another. ;)

Probably because she knows Harding is not a LI. :P

Then I thought you would have realised she isn't speaking with a London accent.

Some of the slang sounds Cockney, but the pronunciation sure doesn't.

I guessed Nottingham, but someone told me the voice actress is from Derby. Not too far off. Both West Midlands.

Studies show only 10% of words are really heard or understood during a typical conversation.  Adding Sera's dialogue and vocabulary to the equation knocks off another 6-8%.

It can all be negated and avoided by simply turning on subtitles, through.

I assume someone has already suggested turning on subtitles, but I'll mention it, just in case.

At the beginning I couldn't understand anything she was saying. By the end of the game, for whatever reason, I could follow her just fine. I don't know if the dialogue itself got easier or I just got used to her cadence and style. I'd prefer to think it's the latter since I find that a very interesting experience and I think she's written brilliantly anyway.

I had this problem. I solved it by throwing her off the nearest mountain.

Well, actually, there was no option for that, so I just didn't talk to her. Ever.

I bet this has nothing to do with her accent. Sera doesn't have a strong accent, and doesn't even use that much slang. What she does do is compress sentences, change sentence subjects mid-stream, and bring up new ideas with minimal preamble.

Basically, she's a scatterbrain.

I won't agree on "funny" or "interesting" but she's generally an incomprehensible mess, and turning on subs for one character is kind of a waste. The only other time I've actually had to do that was for the Jamaicans in GTA IV.

So the combination of "gibberish" and "personality like nails on a chalkboard" gets her sent to the bench on a permanant basis.
