Aside from the nearly all rubbish SMGs, the other multiplayer guns all seem to have some clear variation in pros and cons, but the assault rifles I can never really figure out what the benefits of some over others is (aside from the Harrier, which is clearly great, just limited slightly by forcing you to stick close to ammo boxes).

Some definitely seem to work better for me than others, the Mattock is in theory pretty decent, as is the Argus? However I just can't get either to work for me with any characters. The Valkyrie feels really good on my Cabal, but I see a lot of people not rating it very highly. The Adas I like on my Justicar, but again I don't know why because everyone else seems to think it's rubbish.

Is there any general consensus on which ARs are really viable on Gold+ and what each one brings over the others?

I suppose what confuses me is they're all basically fast firing, lower damage weapons, with the exception of the Saber, which like the Harrier can be excluded from this because it's pros and cons are clear.

All Ultra Rare ARs are great on all kits.

All Gold ARs are decent on all kits.

The rest are junk.

Anything fast ROF low damage is going to need something for armor mitigation or it will suck butt. No idea if that's what you're doing wrong or not but SMGs and ARs are both pretty meh with no form of armor sundering ammo or mods.

Harrier is probably the best AR IMO. Mod it with damage barrel, extended clip with AP rounds to get the most out of it. Controlled bursts to the head to conserve ammo.

Personally I don't find any of the ARs just painful to use but some are definitely better than the others: Harrier, PPR, Saber, Typhoon, Valkyrie, Lancer are some of my favorites off the top of my head. Spitfire is pretty good but I hate it, the yaw on that weapon annoys me. Adas, Striker, Falcon, etc all pretty decent as well with the right setup.

Depends on the character, mods, amps, and ammo as well as enemy faction.

For instance, if you are fighting Cerberus, you have lower HP enemies that aren't too difficult to headshot.  The are 2 main units with armor, one of which can be triple shotted to make up a little damage.  Whether or not Phantoms are a giant pain will depend on if you are host or not, what character you are playing, and if you happened to go with 2m of penetration to double hit them through the bubble.

If you just want a succinct summation though, I would amend FtFTL's post to say that the gold AR's are decent on some characters, not all characters.

Phantoms flick you off all day when you shoot at them with an AR.

Pros: some are full auto to keep pressure on enemies, can handle omniblade for melee characters, 90% armor mitigation mod (if I'm not mistaken)

Cons: no Venom

I like the following combos, which I don't see much:

Valkyrie:  Geth Engineer

Falcon:  Any melee-specced Krogan (with Extended Mag and Melee blade)

Lancer:  Any and all classes

I like Falcon + Incendiary 4 on TSent and Slayer -- stunlock 3 phantoms, then detonate FE

Falcon is crap against single targets but great against groups.

GPR and Avenger can be used on gold on a human engineer -- they're mostly for ammo application and for something to do between overloads.

I actually saw a Valkyrie GE just the other day. Oh, wait, that was you :)

The Avenger is OK on Gold on the Human Cryo Soldier too, and if you put it on the TGI it's actually almost decent.

Lancer is great on caster classes once it's leveled up. I use it on my Justicar and Human engie.

I've always really liked the Saber too.

ARs are a highly versatile group, IMHO it has the largest variability of all weapon groups.

First of all there are basic jack of all trade ARs like the phaeston or the CAR. They are good fro any character, they are clearly not the best weapons but you can get decent results. Good fro either ammo priming (incediary, distruptor, cryo) or for AP/warp.

Then there are the "stagger sticks": falcon, ADAS. they give stagger and excellent ammo application. for this reason I like them best on engineers. Human engi + falcon + incediary/distruptor ammo or QFE + ADAS + cryo/distroptor ammo. Both are wicked good easily plat viable.

Then there are the burst fire headshot weapons. These are usually very good mook killers. Valkyrie is the prime example, it excells on any weapon kit with headshot or AR bonus (TSent, TSol TGI, geth weapon kits, etc). The Argus is a bit trickier because it needs a stability bonus from somewhere (mod, gear, etc) but with it it is at least as good or even better (IMO) than the Valkyrie.

Then you have the kind of "mini-macine guns": revenant, typhoon, spitfire. The revenant is a bit tricky because you need hard cover, and most players here despises it, but it is a good gun for casters (! yes) because it has low weight yet reasonably high DPS. The thyphoon and spitfire are both topnoch weapons, best used on tanky kits with ROF increase: prime examples are the flamerlees geth trooper or the destroyer, but feel free to experiment.

Then there is the mattock a "mini-harrier", you need fast fingers to get the best out of it but it is a very god gun.

Then comes three unique ARs:Harrier, Saber and PPR.

The Harrier is the harrier, the TGI+harrier combo is one the most OP kits in the game despite the ammo shortage.

The Saber is the king of headshots AR. TSent, Tsol, Geth, infiltrators, anything you wanna headshot with, easily plat viable very powerful.

The PPR is arguably the best ram up weapon. Use it with cheese or without is (i.e. incediary or warp/AP) it is very powerful, biotic charcters (for warp priming or cheesing), tanky soldiers or just the good ol TSent it is awesome on many kits.

Falcon - Human Sentinel, Drell Adept

Is there a special reason for that one?

I remember there was one which is deadly on full auto, I'd probably use only that.

Because the human sentinel has projectile powers and the falcon stuns phantoms so they wont block the powers. You can also stun a group and apply and detonate a super powerful biotic explosion in the middle of the group. Drell adept is more about area control. Falcon stuns a group, reave the group, falcon stuns group again, and then cluster grenades wipes out the group. Sometimes those two kits can be pretty squishy, but with the falcon staggers it gives them a lot more survivability.

ARs = A lot of bullets fast--Harrier and Typhoon rock; also Sabre--not exactly fast but BIG bullets!  Agree with Catastrophy--many pistol, sub-machinegun, and sniper amps but never enough AR amps.  PPR--yeah.  Lancer is good on casters.  Valkyrie--back and forth on.  Revenant--TSOL only.  The rest--Mhew (but Mattock is a good starter)!  All said, ARs are weapons of choice on all but caster and infiltrator classes.

ARs have the best diversity IMO. They work with most kits pretty well. No real cons IMO (well, except me hating two of them more than most things in the game)
