Technically, this only means that the original character model was a woman, not that they intended for there to be no male option in the Character Creator.
I didn't say there wouldn't be a male option. I said 'default'. In the same way that Male shepard is the 'default' option in the series we have.
Shepard, I think, is based on at least a couple of guys, one being Alan Shepard (first American in space) and James "Jimmy" Doolittle (Doolittle Raid on Tokyo after bombing of Perl Harbor). So, yeah, Shepard was envisioned as a guy, but this is still pretty cool. Shepard was always a woman to me though.
Edit: Shepard was always envisioned as both a man and woman.
Great news, I just wish they'd say that earlier and not 10 years later. ![]()
Also dudeshep was never the "default". There's no default gender, both Jane and John are the defaults.
He was just there for marketing purposes (which annoyed me, grew so tired of him being everywhere).

If you select 'default shepard' in mass effect one character creation you are given a male soldier shepard named John.

...which was a stupid move from bioware back then.
Good that this shite didn't happen in 2 and 3.
Yet somehow Bioware couldn't be arsed to market FemShep until ME3.
And only after there was a huge demand to market FemShep.
Interesting.
Well, there you go. The fact that it took 8-10 years to find out something so fundamental to the series' origins is borderline depressing.

Read the tweet, guys. Shepard was always male and female. The marketing on the other hand... let's not talk about that.

There are two BW defaults of Shepard, John and Jane. BW does have its own canon however, but never mentions the gender of Shepard. Read the comic, Mass Effect: Redemption. (the first one w/ Liara) The first comic goes so out of its way to not specify the gender of Shepard that it is poorly written.

wait what?
thank god this didn't happen
Why is that?
Character and appearance-wise my Shepard has nothing in common with neither John nor Jane Shepard. That pretender on the posters is not real Commander Shepard! ![]()
thank god this didn't happen
good for the females that they have their options but for me Shepard is a male (with his default face, can't stand looking at another) and voiced by Mark Meer!
I wish you wouldn't say this. To say "good for the women" and say that shepard was a dude for you would be enough. But then you had to say "thank god this didn't happen".
Do you have any idea how annoying was to see dudeshep being constantly marketed and no sign of fShepard who was also in game and they couldn't even be bothered to show both shepards until ME3? Actually, no you don't.
Please, don't say such things just to annoy the rest of us who prefered a female Shepard. It was painful enough back then when we had dudes telling us that "maleshep is canon", whereas there was no canon shepard. Not to mention marketing doesn't equal canon, and they never mentioned a canon shepard. ![]()
Kinda annoying to see people post this online like its some big deal for FemShep (for the record, I often use the term MaleShep as well) or for women as a whole.
It was a joke tweet. Dammit. Shep was always Male and Female and using some old model for initial testing doesn't mean anything.
Polygon... (though to their credit, their article wasn't toned nearly as seriously as how people decided to run with it)

For the record, your examples is the whole other end of annoying. FemShep was certainly equal in importance and almost as important in design (I'm talking about some animation/rigging issues with FemShep that didn't exist with MaleShep).
The Marketing for Mass Effect had so many problems throughout the trilogy.. ![]()

Nope, she wasn't. But i'm not going to argue this. What happened, happened. Sadly. ![]()

You mean the 'equal in importance' part? Yeah, arguably she wasn't, even when you look at the Love Interest selection and fates. I still think she was though, but that Bioware went an 'equal but different approach' that doesn't entirely work (I got an air of "Women like tragic dying lovers to take care of, right?" with Thane).
But anyway, what I meant was that FemShep was a clear main option and those who blabbed on about "MaleShep is canon" were idiots. That was my main point. I was agreeing with you.
Dude here. Most of my Shepards are female.
Just make it so for the NME. And have Emily Blunt as both the model and voice actor for Neo "Not Shepard".

Oh i completely misunderstood your post, my bad. Yep, pretty much the bolded part, especially.

Yeah, I see it as a cool little factoid, sort of like how Ripley from Alien was supposed to be a man, but they cast Sigourney Weaver instead. The fact that Ripley was the only one to survive in the end was not some feminist statement, but was, at the time, a twist on the traditionally horror movie ending.
