So, 2-Handed Warriors, do you prefer your weapon to be AOE or Single Target for damage and why.

 

From what I've seen, there doesn't seem to be a significant difference in DPS between the AOE vs. Single Target weapons but maybe I'm missing something.

I wondered this myself, what is the bonus to a non AOE two hander

I've been using a single target maul with my Qunari 2h'er.  I really love the animation with that weapon.  As far as bonus' it probably depends on the weapon.  I haven't gotten that far with him yet so I don't know.  But I'd expect single target weapons to have higher damage(burst) with less DPS,

The single target damage you see from the Mauls is greater. Especially if you factor in Critical hits.

 

However, my setup is about having a S&B warrior tank/taunt, and having a 2H warrior do localized damage. So, I usually have the 2H warrior scoped out using a 2H Sword.

 

Exception: I run Casandra as a 2H warrior currently. Her combo Wrath/Purge is based on Weapon Damage. The single target Mauls do more WEAPON damage than greatswords. When you add in something like the tonic of mighty offense, when you have an ability to do 600% weapon damage, the maul just hits harder. (And then so do the crits)

Greataxes are the best weapons in the game for 2 handed warriors, specifically the Hossberg Twainer and  the Ornate Battleaxe schematics. 

 

It's not about weapon types and aoe giving up damage or other such nonsense. It's about the number of metal slots in the weapon.

 

For example the Sata-Kas Iss is a maul schematic that has 20 metal damage slots. With dragon bone this gives me a weapon damage of 233.

 

The Ornate Battleaxe schematic is a greataxe schematic that has 20 metal damage slots. With dragon bone this also gives me a weapon damage of 233, while also being AoE. 

 

Then why choose greataxes over say, greatswords,  you might ask? 

 

The other slots. The Hossberg Twainer has metal offense and 2 cloth offense. This means you can fill every single slot of it with attack%. That's the best stat for damage unless you can always be flanking. Why choose the Ornate Battleaxe? It has 2 leather offense slots and 1 metal offense, meaning it has the possible highest crit% of the 2 aoe weapons types. This is important because it's crucial to skills the warrior has such as Flow of Battle, Shield Breaker and Crippling Blows. It also means you will do more damage under the effects of the Mighty Offense Tonic or if you wear superior prowler armor.

Balanced great sword is also extremely good. Great slots on that one too as it has 2 cloth offence slots.
