Interesting.. I used all 50% is Dragon rage and 50% ish greatsword standard kills and only got 57 greatsword kills by the end of the round even though I had 118 kills total... I am on PC by the way.
My Devour kills didn't count towards the Greatsword challenge, I don't believe, but that was at the beginning of this process, and I no longer clearly remember. It was easy enough to get the Greatsword challenge done, regardless.

I used dragonrage, devour, warhorn, and basic attacks on PC, and got 115 kills that counted towards the challenge.
Perhaps the fact that it was a Superb Rune increased the odds that the elemental damage would get credit for the kill. I have been testing using normal runes (with the exception of 1 Master Rune on my Assassin.)
I suspect that the strength of the rune would definitely increase the odds of it being an elemental kill vs. weapon kill, particularly since the scale of damage increases so dramatically with runes.
I'm sure there's an easier way to get Elemental kills than this, but since no one else has mentioned it:
- Platform (PC, Xbox One, etc.) PC
- Whether you have the DLC "Destruction" downloaded, or not Yes
- Weapon type, as well as whether it is single-target or AoE Greatsword, AoE Damage
- Which class you used with the weapon Katari
- Rune type (if applicable) None
The Shattered Ground upgrade to Earthshaking Strike can/will set enemies on fire and, if that kills them, grant you Elemental kills progress.
Soloed Perilous Routine with my Katari, Longbar Blade with Fire rune - most kills were from abilities (Charge, Mighty Blow and Shattered Ground mostly): got 100 Greatsword kills, and about 25 elemental kills.
Soloed with Keeper, Staff of the Dynamo with Spirit rune. Most kills were staff or Chain Lightning: got about 60 elemental kills.
2nd solo got last few needed.
Bumping to keep this on the first page until after the weekend challenge is over.
I completed the 100 elemental without actually trying. Hunter. PBTM w/ Superb Lightning. Maybe 3 or 4 games before I noticed the weekend event was even up.
I can't imagine it's much more difficult for anyone else.
Newer players are unlikely to have Superb Runes (or even much in the way of elemental staves.)
I just soloed Routine with Katari for GS kills (got 5 elemental in the process), and with AW for elemental kills (used CL and basic attacks).
I was planning on using Ele, but the jerk glitched the key on floor 1 so I switched to AW.

You could always stick the DLC on a USB key until you've finished the challenge.
Or until they patch the key glitch, for that matter...
