Is it possible to switch from 1H to 2H without major problems?

I've restarted my 2-handed wielding qunari countless times due to insatisfaction with her appearance.

So to make the process less tedious, I decided I'd start with 1-handed weapons and switch to a good ol' warhammer as soon as possible.

But it immediately becomes strange when you do.

The first drawback you notice is not having any initial skills with that kind of weapon and needing to spend points on basic attacks.

The second issue is... the new abilities don't replace the old ones properly.

The slot that once contained a 1-H skill becomes inactive, while your new attack is moved to an extra slot instead of simply replacing that one.

It's a mess.

My question is, does it get normal as you progress in the skill tree?

There is an item that lets you respec whenever you want, which should get rid of the initial skills and let you replace them.  Have you tried that?

Here is the location, if you don't know about it... not really a spoiler, but w/e...

You can also put the skills into whatever slot you want.

AFAIK, one may not switch weapons during a battle, and those Active Talents for the missing weapon will not work. However, I am told all Passives from other Tiers will apply if possible. Personally, it seems to be best to select one or the other to maintain Quickslots with applicable abilities, but I would be interested to see if a Hybrid can be successfully done.

You spec in one or the other. No switching back and fourth unless you re-spec your character. Taking both Two-hander and Weapon/Shield skills will just nerf your character to be honest because there aren't really enough skill points to accommodate both styles and it's not worth switching to a Two-hander for any reason if you already have Weapon/Shield skills, there's really no huge DPS increase.

Also, two-hander tree is currently all-around worse. The skills have twice the cooldown times and no survivability. Stick to Weapon/Shield and Vanguard tree early on, best way to go.

Later on when specializations come into play, you can attempt 2Hander again... goes nicely with the Champion Specialization if you're playing Nightmare especially. You can finally build that 2hander tank you wanted.

Ofcourse if you're just playing casual mode... pick whatever is cool to you because you can beat the game without equipping anything at all.

What do you mean, specializations? Champion?

When you get to Skyhold you can do a war table operation to unlock specialization trainers for the inquisitor. For warriors you can go reaver, templar or champion. Reavers are the high dps, high risk spec that does more damage the more health they're mising. Templars are more of a party buff spec but they do great AoE damage with Wrath of Heaven/Spell Purge Combo. Champions are the Im Not Gonna Die spec.

Just did a quick search... there's no way I'm spending all my points on purely defensive skills like the Vanguard class.

But tell me something, are all warrior specialisations exclusively 1-handed? Aside from reaver, I mean.

As for a normal mage, mastering the three elements would take up too many points, I figure.

All specialisations are weapon-type agnostic. They work no matter what type of weapon you specialise in.

And as for your original post, that's happening because those abilities are weapon-type specific. Warriors have one 1h specific skill tree, on 2h specific skill tree, and the rest of the skill trees are independent of weapon type. That said, passive abilities, even from the 1h and 2h trees, should be considered to function at all times no matter what weapon you're using unless they specifically say otherwise.

Theres not enough points for a mage to max out all elements, no. But theres no need to, like theres no point to take all the points in Vanguard for warriors. You take what you need from a tree. Your going to spread your points around and the only tree your probably going to max will be your specialization and maybe not even then.

Reaver can also go sword and shield and do well. Templars that go 2h are strong and their WoH/Spell Purge combo does even more damage. Champion as 2h works well too. A 2h reaver probably does the most dps for warriors but I hated that spec. It made me hate my Qunari warrior and rush to finish the main quest with him. When I do another play through Im going to do another warrior and go with another spec.
