Playing on PC with characters pre-specialisations, beyond the first couple of levels the game was just about right on hard. No fight was too hard, but there would be some potion popping, and you couldn't totally fall asleep at the wheel.
Post specialisation, that changed somewhat. I went KE because I wanted to see what all the fuss was about - I know, I know, I was warned - and whaddya know, hard is too easy - at least with foes around the same level (12) in western approaches. So I went nightmare and took on a rift, and, well, it was somewhat chaotic, and all my allies died, but sure enough whack whack the KE makes it through. Not on full health, mind you, but no pots, and never in real danger because of all that fading.
Now, I suspect that I could have mitigated this by a lot more micromanagement and preparation of my party, more pots, better positioning etc (Solas AI really has a weird habit of jumping into the middle of things, and Varric is not making best use of his traps; at least we can rely on Iron Bull to hit stuff as he's supposed to), but it felt like it was a wee bit busy work.
I got home and took the plus 10% defense perk, and will probably play a little more carefully in nightmare, but I kind of wish 'hard' was somewhere in between hard and nightmare, and that I could play there, with a little less start stop micromanagement, but not the cakewalk that hard currently seems to be.
Will it get more difficult? I don't really want to force my crew on hard into higher level zones, as I'm quite enjoying looking around this one... I can see why some games have difficulty sliders, although tbh it all start to feel rather 'gamey' at that point.
Another question: in any areas, do foes start to match your level, or is low level always low level?
