My favorite squad was: Female Hawke, Bethany, Isabella & Merill. After Bethany was no longer an option  :( Aveline stepped in.

  • Varric is awesome, but no match for Isabella.
  • Anders was fascinating in Awakening, but not in II
  • Fenris was interesting in short bursts, but got on my nerves quick
  • Sebastian was a waste of a good actor
  • Carver... just no

It's quite hilarious how the females in this game are portrayed as all strong with their heads screwed on...

Yet the men, minus Varric, are all emos with major mental issues.

But that's the thing with BW: they completely destroy stereotypes.

Safe to claim half the people did, don't assume people like to knife their companions.

Fenris isn't so bad. :) He can grow on you if you have some patience with him. And... don't put him and Anders in the party together, unless you enjoy lots of b****ing and hostile conversations. He gets along well with Isabela, Aveline, Varric and Sebastian, though. Still, there's no denying the women tend to be the most stable in the group. Nothing wrong with that. :P

Pretty much every companion character in DA2 is deeply flawed in some way, except Varric and Aveline, but the male companion personalities do tend to be more grating, whereas female companion flaws seem to be more related to actions (use of blood magic, the Tome of Koslun).  I mean, blood magic aside, Merrill is adorable, and Isabella has, hands down, some of the best lines in the game.

How can anyone like Merrill?  I liked her more in origins.  She suddenly got majorly stupid.  Hate stupid.  Ignores everyone else who doesn't agree with her.  Come on,,,,, it's like she shifted to a 10 year old mentality.  "Demons are just spirits.  It's not their fault they're like they are."  Wow.  What a statement.  Guess she hangs out with rapists and pedafiles too cause they cant help what they are either.  Hated her.  Wanted to like but couldn't.  Too freaking stupid.

Like the banter between Varric and Fenris

Broody Elf and Shorty are fun to be around. Blondie has heals. Choir Boy has the funniest outfit. Junior is...uh...well, whatever.

I like Sebastian and Fenris so they're almost always along for the ride.

Merrill was just a lousy attempt at Tali for Dragon Age.

Agreed.  If I could have Bethany for the entire game, I wouldn't bring Anders anywhere.  Hell, if it was possible, I would've tried making Merrill my healer after Act I.

Aveline's my tank and I flip-flop between having Isabela or Varric as my rogue, so the only part that sucks is that I'm stuck with Anders and my healer for 2/3 of the game.  Whenever I get the chance to bring Bethany along, I kick Anders out.

* sighs *  I miss Awakening Anders...

I knew it! I knew that women had a huge influence in the development of inquisition.  What else could turn a hard D&D world into Days Of Our Lives than girl gamers.  This is why bio ware decided to focus on the cute cuddly atmosphere and social elements of the game.  While totally negating the combat that is filled with bugs, glitches and not even worth mentioning.

Chalk that up to bad character design. Hell DAO had some awesome characters of both genders. A few favorites being Shale and Oghren.

I agree except that Merrill was naive, had a few screws loose, and fit the blonde stereotype despite being a brunette.

Merrill was not stupid but actually was intelligent.  However, she was severely lacking in experience and wisdom.

Yeah but as we found out later Bertrand was the idiot in Varric's family. Varric was the smart one.

I'm sensing some inconsistency...

Really, Merrill wasn't nutso, it's just that she was extremely stubborn.  Hell, she knew she had a real chance of being possessed in her Act III quest and asked Hawke to kill her if she did.  She knew what she was doing and the risks, which is more than can be said for Anders.  He joined with Justice and considered himself an abomination, yet he constantly ripped on Merrill any chance he could get.  It's to the point that I wish there was an option to punch him.  And I actually cheered when I saw him blow up the Chantry in my first playthrough.

Anyway, that's it with the Merrill debate.  Tends to get ugly...

Well, hate to say this, but this appears to be the mentality in real life for some as well.. Consider those who claim the terrorists in Paris in January were victims as well. In Sweden a reporter claimed "those who have been killed are not innocent people, they have offended (a religion it seems it is practically forbidden to talk about)."
