I'm new to this game and it's time for me to pick a specialization for my mage but I have no idea. I don't want to make a bad choice and then regret it the rest of the game. Knight-Enchanter or Necromancy sound the most interesting but what has your experience been?

Rift Mage is for those that want to use crowd control and cast major spells of damage. Force foes together then drop a large AoE atop of them is a reported tactic.
Knight Enchanter can go into melee if they wish, or remain at distance and sling spells from there; supposedly maintain Barrier for a much longer time.

A KE with fire magic, a little winter and energy barrage is great fun.

Knight Enchanter is really powerful... too powerful if you ask me. I watched my brother solo a dragon three level higher than he was... on nightmare... and killed it with full health. You'll feel like a badass for a while, but the novelty will quickly run out, I think, and so will the fun because the challenge is gone. I don't know. Depends on what kind of player you are, and what kind of experience you want from the game. If what I described is something you find appealing, go for Knight Enchanter. Otherwise, I recommend Rift Mage... a great crowd control specialization.
Oh, you know what... before you decide, take some of your mages out for a spin and test their specialization. See which style is best for you. Then go back and decide.

BioWare didn't approach Necromancy the way I'd have liked them to. It's not as fun - or powerful - as the other two. Perfectly viable, though.
My personal favourite is KE.

I don't think Rift Mages are any less powerful than Knight Enchanters. KEs is the best mage specialization for solo'ing in the game because it makes you really hard to kill, but RMs can deal more damage.

Rift mage is great at area of effect spells, and paired with an upgraded static cage, can do a buttload of damage really fast, and is decent in crowd control.
Necromancy looks weak at first glance, and it in itself doesn't do much damage at all. But it's the best at crowd control in the game. Paired with fire spells, and it is near impossible to get close to the mage, who also regenerates health and mana. It's meant to control the battlefield when used with fire and creativity. It's a class meant to have your companions do the tanking and damage. It's the hardest to use, but very effective when done right.
Knight Enchanter is a walking tank/dps combo. With the right spells, masterworks and equipment, it's near impossible to damage.

Playtest all the specs with your companions so you get an idea of how they play. Make a save before you pick your character's specialization and don't overwrite it. That way you can reload if you decide you don't like your choice down the road.
In my opinion, KE is the most versatile build. You can go full melee with Spirit Blade spam, stand back and be a typical caster but with enhanced survivability, or anything in between. Its a very effective specialization.
Necro is a bit trickier to play. It has lower mana regen than the other specs and the Panic aspect is one of the worst forms of crowd control. Spirit bomb does good damage, but I believe it (or the tooltip) is bugged and it does less than it says. Most of your real work will be done with spells from other trees, so basically your really only getting one decent damage spell to add to your mix, and its one you'll have to invest heavily in the tree to get to.
Rift mage has great crowd control in Pull of the Abyss, a good damage spell in Stonefist, and can gain back mana from Weakened enemies, which all your RM spells can cause. The downside is that it's a very buggy tree:
1) Hitting a Weakened enemy with another Weaken effect cancels the effect and makes the enemy immune to it for a short time.
2) Stonefist is an Impact detonator but it doesn't work properly. You do no extra damage when detonating shatter and rupture combos.
3) Pull of the Abyss only lasts for 8 seconds instead of the listed 12. More importantly, when the spell ends, it more often than not throws the effected enemies directly at your character. I can't count the number of times I ended up with 3+ angry enemies right in my face, with my tank stuck over there where the spell had been cast. It happened so often that for a while I was casting Ice Mine right at my own feet to catch them with it. Later on I started using Lightning Cage to prevent it, usually cast by my other mage.
Despite the bugs, Rift is the spec I spent the most time with. When it works, it's a lot of fun and my favorite spec by a wide margin. The crowd control is great and the mana regen makes it probably the best nuker in the game. When it works. ![]()
