So..

Gatt discusses with Solas about his lack of being "marked by the circle" during Iron Bull's quest and in DA:2, Grace tells Anders "You bear no mark of the circle"

What exactly is the "Mark of the circle" and why do we never see it on either our circle mage Warden or our circle mage Inquisitor?

You know. I have no idea. Grace does give you a staff bearing the mark of her circle, though, said she dared not carry it anymore. Maybe it has something to do with that.

I was thinking it was like a ring or amulet. Something with a circle of magi logo. If a mage is a part of a circle and are in the outside world, I would imagine they would need some kind of sign on them that they are not an apostate to avoid problems. That they are a circle mage with a special privileges and trusts.

Solas has never been in a circle, but Anders has. He is just no longer apart of it. If he went around in a Warden uniform, that would be a good mark against trouble for a mage, but he's not wearing that logo either.

I think it's just the circles insignia thing. You know, that weird part circle that has the line through it.

If I remember DAO when you go through your initiation as a mage and pass (aka "Do not become a demon") you get a tatoo or something symbolizing that your of the circle now. I think also if I remember Anders having it removed because I know he excepted his fade soul (was like "vengence" or something which is also a  pool in DAA) within himself and decided to quit the mages entirely because he always hated how the templars always kept a watchful eye of mages to ensure they don't become demons. Since Anders quit the mages and excepted a fade soul this makes him unmarked by the mages. If i remember Gatt right he still believed in the mage beliefs n stuff even though he isn't with them or is a mage himself? Anyhoo I don't recall him saying he accepted a fade soul and hating templars for anything with every dire being in his body like Anders.

I remember getting a ring with the circle insignia, a staff and robes after DA:O's harrowing but I was never offered or given a tattoo.

I was just curious at any rate and it compelled me to ask if anyone knew what Grace and Gatt were talking about when they mentioned being marked by the circle.

Thanks for the replies.

I don't recall a tattoo ever coming up for a mage... As someone stated already, you receive a ring with the circle insignia (not the circle with the line through it, but the one that is sectioned into four parts each with a symbol for the "approved" taught schools of magic).

Also, being a Harrowed mage marks you somehow. It's the reason why Jowan needs your mage to get into the Phylactery chamber, only a Harrowed mage can help open the door. But I thought Anders had at least gone through his Harrowing

EDIT: Also I don't see how Gatt would have been able to tell if you were Harrowed, since he wasn't a mage or Templar that could tell. So I can only assume "the mark of the circle" can only refer to the ring, or some kind of insignia you wear.

Yes, it's probably just the ring or the lack of some other insignia-bearing item.

But I do sometimes wonder if there isn't also an attitude that others pick up on.

I would have thought the same of Anders as well. How he managed to not be made tranquil was beyond me any how.

Gatt's comment confused me quite a bit more than Grace's did and I found myself thinking ''How would he even know?" But then again, he is a ben-hassrath like Iron Bull so maybe that's how he knows?

I would imagine the Templars probably had that planned for Anders in Awakening. Especially after he kept escaping.

I saw it as having your blood taken for a phylactery, given that they do not have mondern medicine, cutting to draw blood would leave a scar. Being Ben Hassrah, Gatt would know to look for such scars.

Since they used magic to heal the wound (Codex entry from the Western Approach) I doubt it would leave a scar and I doubt it would have to be a big enough incision to leave a scar to get the blood
