This worked for me on a PC:

 

Whenever I highlighted the doors with the cursor, and pressed the "interact" key... nothing happened.

 

But: stand near the door, so the door is highlighted. Move the curson away from the door, so it does not change into the lock icon. Then press the "interact" key. Voila: the message "need a rogue" appeared, and the dialog option with Sera became available.

Nope.
I guess it's a combined thing: interacting with doors and approval.
I tried the doors and the dialogue option didn't pop up. Now I'm bringing Sera around, helping little people in the hinterlands. I hope this will get me enough approval.

Unless you're planning on murdering elves for sport, I don't think anything will get her approval

You don't need much approval to get that option. The first time you talk to her, choose the middle option in the second dialogue branch and the middle option (or flirt) at the end and you'll have all the approval you need.
