I actually found the Mage Warden's harrowing funny in that you are supposed to face A demon yet wind up going against 3 demons. LOL, imagine if they all teamed up against you.

I don't think that answers my question, but as a digression I'd been under the impression that they had: Mouse the probable Pride Demon forced Sloth and Rage to play their parts in a ruse to get you to trust him.

Most of this is in line with how I'd try to handle it, but how are mages who simply can't pass the Harrowing handled without Tranquility?

 

If they're abominations, strike them down. If they fail the test without being corrupted, let them retake it a few more times. If they continually fail without becoming abominations, offer them the choice between Tranquility and death. It's harsh, but it isn't worth risking many lives to preserve one. No system is perfect, unfortunately.

Um....the Harrowing is designed specifically to force you into circumstances where you may get possessed, whether by force or through trickery, you must resist or fail, or if you take too long, die. 

 

There is no failing it and not ending up possessed.
