Should mages be free?

No they shouldn't be free.
I haven't ever heard any version of mage freedom that would actually work in the Dragon Age universe. It's just all: mages should be freed, then it stops there and none thinks inevitable consequences.

You mean the Divine didn't cuddle the Templars and for once after thousand years leaned a little towards the mages? Justinia is venerated by every single person we meet in the game, she was the best thing that happened to Thedas in long while. Besides a conversation between Cole and Cass reveals that Lambert seek to bring the Divine and the system associated with her down and make himself the dictator. The seekers and lord seeker Lambert get the majority of the fault here.
No she didn't "lean a little towards the mages" She first deliberately held Lambert and his forces up so that the mages could discuss the rite of tranquility without his input (which as we now know is the head seekers knowledge and not meant for mages.) Then she sent her agents to kill his men and help the mages escape the white spire. Lambert was just supposed to take that?
When his direct superior had become wholly corrupt, he was no longer under any obligation to follow her.

Except he knew what the cure was all along and used everything in his power to stop it from becoming public knowledge and when a Templar disagreed he cut her down. Lambert was corrupt way before the Divine conspiring to overthrow the divine. And the divine's "corruption" is highly debatable. You people call everyone who slightly supports the mages corrupt. There hasn't been any one as corrupt as Lambert in a long while.

Who?
Two Knight-Captain's, one pacified a city under the "right of annulment", the other did so of his own free will. How dangerous can a mage truly be if two Templar's are able to murder hundreds on their own?

So tell me how much you know about how college works, given the fact that Leliana epilogue talks about months later after establishment of college and how it works well. Since you have already passed judgement based on your opinion... enlighten us.
Its also worth mentioning that Cassandra also allows the mages to govern themselves provided you side with mages. So in half the endings mages government themselves (Leliana in either case and half of Cassandra's epilogues)

It's the pursuit of self interest. I don't blame the mages on moral grounds for it. I just do not believe normal people should just allow them to do so without opposition.

Did you just ask how it's possible for magic canceling warriors to fight completely helpless mages once their magic is canceled? Something everyone can't do?

Evangeline didn't "disagree", she joined the mage rebelion outright to protect her mage boyfriend. She too was wholly corrupt by that point.
Lambert actually didn't overstep his bounds at all. He took control of the tower which was within his authority as head seeker. The rite of tranquility cure is knowledge that was never meant to become public, he was witholding it just as all of his predecessors had done, he didn't even declare war upon the mages, he vowed to drag them all back to the circles.
The mages at that point were criminals evading arrest, and they declared war. First upon the templars, then upon the rest of the free world when they decided to align with Tevinter.

Do you even have the slightest clue on Templar abilities? They don't just run into an area sword swinging and automatically cancel all magic... *sigh*

Are you suggesting that every non mage should become a lyrium addict in order to be able to protect themselves from mages? Even then, without their magic cancelling abilities Templars are amongst the best warriors in thedas, so does everyone need to get the best martial training around?

Mages should be held to the same laws as everyone else.
Agreed....
Did not think I'd see the day. But agreed nonetheless.

The mages didn't know they were an elitist cult. They told the mages no such thing. For all intents and purposes the mages did ally with Tevinter.

Nothing about Leliana's college taking in consideration that this is first time I hear about it and I haven't played DAI yet.
Mandatory education in the circles and then monitored freedom isn't considered freedom most of the time, but that's best shot for mages to get freedom if they don't want to follow Tevinter's model.
And still haven't heard any good version of mage freedom without circles, templars and resctrictions.

That's just the arbitrary position the writers decided on. The rest is just inventing events and writing them into the story to support it.
That's literally using straw-man arguments. (like Fiona suddenly running to the most-trustworthy-looking magister out there for protection)
There are enough possible solutions out there, I suggested some of them myself in the past, but why would the writers bring the conflict to conclusion when they can just squeeze it for all it's worth for story potential? That's much easier.

Are you deliberately ignoring the reveal that Lambert was trying to overthrow the divine before the whole tranquil ideal? Because frankly its getting amusing as its the 3rd time.

Well in context that writers have created mage freedom doesn't make sense if writers don't want to recon 1) demons 2) fear of magic 3) following factions: circles, templars and chantry (well these go under some change in DAI but I doubt far enough).
