I could probably get past Geralt's appearance if it wasn't for his awful personality. (Admittedly I'm basing my judgement of that on the whole hour I spent as him before I thought 'why do I have to play this douche?' and uninstalled the game forever.)

It's not as if I don't like rugged - Blackwall is smoking hot, and I'd climb Iron Bull like a tree. Geralt's face is weirdly proportioned, though, and he looks greasy. Ugh.

For instance, Beiber fans. Or Falloutboy fans. Tom Cruise fans. Ashton Kutcher fans...

For dragon age, Sebastian. Bad taste, lol.

Not considering that women might possibly play their game, for one thing. There are so many signs it'd be difficult to list them all, but a really simple one is camera angles. When the camera lovingly caresses the perfect ass of all of the female characters but doesn't do the same for the male characters, that tells you something about who the game is for and, more importantly, who it isn't for. Hell, even Mass Effect did this.

Ever thought that it's because it's different for men and women? Not all women are the same of course but I've seen this argument before, and a lot more men focus on individual body parts than women do generally. When they do surveys and such, women say they want to see full body shots so they can see a man's arms and broad shoulders for instance.

I know women like a man with a nice ass, but lol, women don't seem to like ass the way men do...

I don't think a game having a masculine pov is the same as not thinking women would play. People said this same thing about True Detective. It was just a story with a more masculine narrative.

That is a super subjective statement lol. One of the main reasons I don't feel compelled to play Witcher is because I find Gerault really gross looking. He looks like a greasy haired demon hobo grandpa. I love rugged/older men as much as the next lady, but for me this dude is just creepy, like 'I'll see him in my nightmares o god no' creepy.

I echo your sentiments about Witcher, except I wouldn't say the environment in a fantasy game is ever an excuse for archaic portrayals of women. If this were straightup historical fiction, sure, but any other genre has no obligation to show sexism. DA, like all fantasy franchies, is obviously based on medieval Europe, as well, and yet...look what they did lol.

I'm just gonna guess and say DA's number of female fans probably outnumber those for Witcher...even if you were to take the female protagonist out of the DA games, that would probably still be the case. This is based on the fact that they are jam-packed with dynamic and interesting female NPCs that can further engage female players in a respectable way, since they are all diverse in appearances, backgrounds, and personalities, with some even having their chests covered because it's practical! From what I've read and seen, that doesn't like as much as the case for Witcher lol.  (this is of course, in addition to the fact that DA has hotter dudes. Yay)

I would confidently bet my life on this being true.

It's like you're saying because I don't like Gerault, I must have the hots for Justin Bieber/Fallout boy/Cruise/Kutcher/Sebastian. It's so funny you listed all the guys who can probably kill my lady boner the fastest.Except Cruise was pretty hot in rock of ages ngl

Can you like, stop jumping to conclusions about people? Its not cute. I mean, I'm sorry I insulted your hot sweaty man crush. Please don't take is so hard

The Witcher is full of interesting female characters, too, but the game got tarred as sexist and now in some quarters- BSN being no surprise here- it's considered such no matter what they do, simply because they represent a straight male perspective without apology.

And I'm not sure how one gets away from playing that game without finding Geralt a sexy beast.

BTW Mass Effect had the ass shot from game one. Everyone mentions Miranda, but the escort in ME1 gets up in your face and then the camera cuts immediately to a shot of her jiggling ass as she walks up some stairs. Then there's the lapdance minigame across the way. But I just shake my head and enjoy a good game anyway.

Except when pretty much every mainstream game features a 'more masculine narrative', as well as having a lack of female protagonists (among other things), it's very difficult to think that most games are made with women in mind.

I mean, I think last year there were more AAA games with brothels in them than ones with female protagonists. At least in the case of television or books or movies you've got options. If you want a big-budget game that treats women like they're valuable customers then you've got...Inquisition.

With how much TW gets brought up I'm almost tempted to try to play it again just to understand what everyone's talking about but every time I try I get too frustrated with the controls. Oh well at least the sound track is quite nice.

Nothing to contribute, I just wanted to thank you for this statement. I may have laughed more than necessary.

I remember having a similar reaction after learning about the game from my brother.

"Why is this man's face on the cover like he's cool? White hair and slitted eyes make you badass, say what now?"

I've yet to play the Witcher series, don't shoot me. :P

Just because a medium favors one pov, doesn't mean they don't give a damn about females. Not everything's going to be perfectly balanced, and we're talking about individual games anyway.

You can't say this game or that doesn't care about female gamers because it chooses to go from a more masculine perspective like the majority of games do. That's simply the direction they went.

Who's to say females can't enjoy that perspective as much as a man. Brothels no, but brothels being in a place like Witcher is realistic. And Geralt is a man, they chose to use a man for their story... would leaving brothels out make it less masculine and friendly for females? Not like you have to go to the brothel.

I tried Witcher 2 I did. But between the paraphrasing being even more baffling than ME2's (not sure if that as just the intro but it was a poor first impression), the dragon fight (really I don't even think that was a fight. Maybe I was supposed to run and survive but those controls were meh and I wasn't interested enough to tolerate them) making me want to punt a kitten and Geralt being ugly as hell I was pretty turned off.

I'm not gonna say anything about the setting because everything about the game turned me off before I could even get to that point.

Also I have no issue with brothels. It's just background noise. As long as I'm not forced to have T&A shoved in my face go wild.

Geralt is only as promiscuous as you play him. I had him romantic with Triss, and he was mostly faithful. Mostly. :D Also I can't believe that even men get turned on by awkward pixel animations in those brothels, but they're there for roleplay like anything else. I think it's weird that games don't represent prostitutes in such settings. It's not really sex-positive to pretend the oldest profession doesn't exist. I'm sure there would be camp followers in the Inquisition and brothels in Val Royeux, but Bioware has decided to be weirdly PG13 in certain respects.

Also, I've got his as my desktop currently, and if you don't think this is sexy, you might want to get your estrogen levels checked. lol

I for one never went to any prostitute on my canon geralt playthrough. Stayed completely faithful (was hard but I did). I think a lot of the female fans are honestly more skeezy than I am as Geralt. Just goes to show, not everything is as it seems.
