No they don't

I'll mark in spoiler tags,

DA:O -

Spoiler

Mass Effect:

Spoiler

Overall most romances in DA:I are like..

1. "boo hoo you are andraste's inquisitor!"

2. "YOU ARE THE SAVIOUOR!"

3. "Make me babies?"

4. not having any affect on the plot at all... it's utterly boring and except from some witcher style nude scenes nothing new or unique here.

let's take Mass effect again,

Spoiler

or DA:O again...

That has nothing to do with the romances actually effecting the story. That's the story effecting the romances. Which actually does happen in DA:I.

This is true. Morrigan after all is bangable for the godchild no matter what.

Refuted all that in one sentence. Well done.

All those things happen without the romance in origins and ME...

I don't see how any of those statements describe inquisition either...

Why would you even want the romances to change the story? I like the romances, they're nice and they add flavor. But they are optional, they should remain optional and they shouldn't be allowed to override the main story.

Imagine if you were able to stop a romanced Anders from blowing up the Chantry. Or if the dark ritual was only available with a romanced Morrigan. That would have been stupid. On so many levels.

I'd actually be OK with this in certain cases. Developing deeper bonds should have an effect on characters. If people who don't do romances end up losing vast amounts of content it would be a problem, but I think in certain cases it can make sense and would be OK.

Sure, I suppose I'm ok with things like extra dialogue options and stuff like that. But romances shouldn't change the outcome of the plot.

Straight women always have shady romance choices, if its not "making your boyfriend sleep with another women to survive" its "your man dies, cheats & knocks another women up or turns into a psycho terrorist" not surprising some people are tired of the forced tragedy & drama

You still get "force your boyfriend to do drugs" and "you lied to me" x 2. Oh, and a boyfriend who belongs to a cult.

I'm not sure why people think Alistair's romance is sweet. It's pretty horrifying and not because of the ritual, ritual is just the cherry on the top of a very sour cake. You basically have this broken guy with very low self-esteem who all his life wanted affection, the guy is starved to be loved in a non sexual kind of way. This is not a basis for a sweet romance.

Same with Cullen, if you are a mage and keep bringing it up at every given opportunity it creates a very dysfunctional relationship. And you can't think that things are all rosy when the guy basically tells you that he hasn't sort out the whole mage issue.

Maybe I'm crazy but that sounds like the perfect disney fantasy setup right there to me, lol.

I'm OK with it affecting the main plot in rare instances where it makes sense. Same with things like race/sex/origin type stuff.

Eg. A human female noble who romances Alistair can become queen. Thats an effect and it wouldn't make sense for it to happen for other characters. A generic "you romanced x so have some extra options for no reason" would be bad though.

Maybe? I never gave much thought about Disney guys, it's my impression that for the most part they are there to appear in the wedding scene and that's about it. (I haven't watch a Disney film in a long while though, so maybe that has changed)

You have that option no matter if he's romanced or not. The only thing that change if you've romanced him is if you become his mistress or not.

But not if you are a mage or different race. I just meant I'm OK with a romance affecting something in the same way class/race does there! :)

I prefer to romance Cullen with a warrior/rogue, romancing as a mage just feels uncomfortable to me

I just mean for some, catering to a broken individual seems sweet, while in reality, where you're coming from, it's actually rather taxing on an individual.

To each their own in other words. More or less. It sounds good on paper but in practice, needy isn't sweet. That said, I don't actually know the dynamics of that relationship. I only got a small taste when watching a video for a modded love scene.

Yeah, I also prefer it with a non mage character, and if I roll a mage I completely avoid the issue. A certain dialogue at the lake is just plain cruel to both mage IQ and Cullen.

Honestly, as much as I love Queen Cousland, I think it was a bad perk. They had to hand wave it away for Awakening, and just like Viscount Hawke a royal Cousland is a shitty leader who disappears to do their own thing instead of ruling their people.

Yeah, hopefully anything like that will be handled better in the future, but I don't mind the idea behind that type of thing. :)

Whoah, that's like saying that people growing up in different homes are never capable of a loving relationship. Only confident and secured people are.
And maybe you were playing male toon, thats why you did not see the sexual part of that pixelated relationship.

Whoah, that's like saying that people growing up in different homes are never capable of a loving relationship.

Except that's not what I said, you are the one who for some reason decided to generalize in this odd way.

Alistair was given to templars where he didn't want to be. He knows that he is a bastard and feels that he is an unwanted bastard. Until he got the amulet (or whatever that was, don't remember) he thought the Arl didn't loved him and got rid of him because of it. He thinks joining the wardens is better because he thinks of wardens as something where he can belong. It becomes his surrogate family and yet he is not exactly satisfied with it. His perfect reality in the nightmare is being a part of a family with Goldana (not his girlfriend which is a very telling point). He has a meltdown when he realizes that Goldana is not the person he thought she would be and when the reunion doesn't goes the way he hoped. He copes with everything by making jokes. This particular guy has issues.

Realistically speaking people with issues are not fairy tale romance material, of course when you start comparing Alistair or Cullen to Anders or Zevran, or Fenris, or almost any other male LI in DA their issues might seem tame in comparison to some.

(I played as female noble)

By that logic, we shouldn't be romancing anyone in any of the Dragon Age games. I think most of the love interests are at least as messed up as Alistair is (and several are considerably more so.) Josephine is probably the only one that isn't.

Same thing as growing up in different homes. You're there cuz you are not wanted anywhere, therefore completely obliterating your confidence to pulp. So you hide behind anything and everything to cover your short commings like a blanket. And I agree he has had a shitty life. Does not mean there could never be a happy relationship for them. In many ways people like that cherish the good small things in life because they never had them.

I didn't said there couldn't be a happy relationship, I said that to me realistically speaking it doesn't look like a very angst free, smooth sailing sweet relationship.

Happy is a relative term.
