I didn't said there couldn't be a happy relationship, I said that to me realistically speaking it doesn't look like a very angst free, smooth sailing sweet relationship.

Happy is a relative term.

Yeah that is true :-) But what relationship is :-)

By that logic, we shouldn't be romancing anyone in any of the Dragon Age games. I think most of the love interests are at least as messed up as Alistair is (and several are considerably more so.) Josephine is probably the only one that isn't.

You can do whatever you want, nobody is telling you what you should and what you shouldn't do.

As far as DA characters go everyone is messed up, there is no single perfectly normal character in the whole franchise (except maybe Harding, but we don't know about her much) and all male LI are broken guy ™ to one extend or another, some are just less brooding than other. My point was that  as far as male LI goes there is no healthy romance in DA it's the amount of angst and the kind of angst that varies.

I wouldn't say every male DA romance is angst ridden, Zevran & IB are more light hearted then the rest IMO, could be worse like ME2 where everybody had daddy issues that only Shepard could fix

Yes it could be much worse and it's good that in DAI there is a relatively good level of different kind of approach to romance.

Zevran has intimacy issues that he hides behind sex and devil may care attitude, he is on the same level of broken as Fenris, he just don't get broody about it, which might not make it better.

IB ... is complex, his life in Qun has affected much of his personality, for instance his confidence that he knows better than you what you want comes from that. His sex life is another level of confused, plus the guy is struggling with the whole "to Qun or not to Qun and if not to Qun then who am i?" thing.  And if you choose Qun for him, you better embrace  yourself for some serious angst there. It's good though that BW at least made some humour out of it all (I'm saying this from the perspective of someone who will never romance Bull, because I'm sure that some people who wanted a more serious note there, might find the whole thing distasteful)

Im not interested in romancing IB myself either, he reminds me too much of Vega with horns, also his changing voice irritates me at times

You mean in game? Cullen. There are many things I like about him and the way he is written.

I'm not sure why people think Alistair's romance is sweet. It's pretty horrifying and not because of the ritual, ritual is just the cherry on the top of a very sour cake. You basically have this broken guy with very low self-esteem who all his life wanted affection, the guy is starved to be loved in a non sexual kind of way. This is not a basis for a sweet romance.

see, i didn't see alistair as broken.  he's definitely not among the most broken characters in the series >___<  low self-esteem, a little.  i don't usually go for the sweet romances in games, but for me personally, it was the way he spoke and acted in the romance scenes...i melted a lot.  everyone has their own interpretations and opinions though.

That was some distasteful writing. Otherwise I liked how his romance is but you have to be quite d'ck to flirt in that situation. And if you don't pick that flirt the romance fails. Sigh.

I wasn't a fan of how ME2 did romances tbh, with characters pretty much telling Shepard to f**k off if they weren't romanced & missing important character development

Yeah, he is deffo almost sanitized almost angst free in inquisition. I will do his romance after the 2 roler coasters that were blackwall and solas. I will need that safer environment after those 2 i'm sure. His hug after Cory was very sweet. Then back to another rolercoaster that is Alistair :-)

Not sure I'd called it sanitized, there are some typical "boy meets girl" parts in it and I do like that both IQ and Cullen can be rather adorably dorky and awkward, but I mostly like that his personality is written as naturally complex without going into extremes and he is shown to be a matured person, it's a good doze of normality that I find very refreshing and welcomed. It's not without angst and you will probably never be sure if you made the right choice on an occasion.

If you however are playing as a mage and insist on bring up the mage issue all too often, it may become a rather dysfunctional and weird relationship, because if anything Cullen can't lie.

Tbh, i found the awkwardness weird, the Inquisitor can flirt with confidence at the start but once at Skyhold all the flirt options suddenly make her sound like a nervous school girl around him, i thought the change odd

I always avoid that first flirt, whoever animated it is a troll, I'm sure of it! :P

The whole situation of the first flirt is awkward, IQ having that weird awkward smile with Cullen clearing his throat (and I'm still not convinced why: does he find the smile charming (!!!) or is calculating a maneuver for a speedy retreat) I died laughing the first time I saw it.

Do you like the way he is written? Writers made a mess with him, full of inconsistencies and plot holes.

In Asunder all Knight Commanders were called by Lambert, they all agreed to leave the Chantry and hunt the mages, Cullen was the Knight Commander of Kirkwall, so he voted to hunt the mages.
If your Hawke sided with the Templars, you learn that the Kirkwall Templars started using red lyrium, it made them paranoid and they started threatening Hawke, it forced him to go into hiding. And it happened Under Cullen's watch.

I have not read Asunder, nor I plan to, because from what I'm seeing all these external to the game materials mess with the story in general (Alistair templar issue comes to mind).

But even so yes at that point Cullen was fine with hunting mages, there is no inconsistency in this?.

If you let him take you to the lake and start the whole "omg, I'm a mage" discussion (which I find highly inappropriate for that moment, but that's just me).

Spoiler

In game Meredith hid many decisions from Cullen and he was willing to let it pass (for various reasons). If you have a conversation with him about this you'll see that he is not proud of it and feels that he had failed. I'm not sure how this makes him not well written? I'm not sure I understand.

The inconsistency is that in game, he dont know he did it, its clear that his writer didnt know about all Knight Commanders agreeing with Lambert.

Meredith was already dead when the Templars started talking red lyrium, he was in charge of them, he allowed them to take red lyrium, how its not a plot hole?

Sounded more like he was struggling to keep his voice consistent to me
