Advice for nightmare rift mage build?

So, I just finished my first playthrough of the game (hard difficulty) a few weeks ago. I played an archer rogue assassin and it was pretty fun, but overall quite easy. With the right upgrades and perks I was easy dealing 30k+ damage to enemies in a matter of seconds.

For my nightmare play through I decided to go with a female elf rift mage. I'm at level 15 right, and have re-speced at least 6 times, but I think I've finally found a good build.

Spirit tree: no points

Lighting tree: no points

Fire tree: immolate* -> firemine

Ice tree: fade cloak, winter stillness, ice wall, ice mine
Rift mage tree: Stonefist*, and the entire left side up to Pull of the Abyss*

At this point I have no points remaining. For my next 3 levels I'm thinking of getting the fire mine upgrade, ice armor, and blizzard. I've never tried blizzard, but I think it' would work pretty well with pull of the Abyss. I'm considering the encircling veil passive because I think a 25% increase to burn and freeze durations would be useful.

Overall it works for me pretty well. I just managed to kill the highland ravager yesterday. Ice wall is a lifesaver because it blocks the fireballs and saves me from the wing attack that draws you in. Furthermore, it protects me from ranged attacks in normal fights and I can still cast my runes and pull of the abyss from behind it.

My gear right now is:
Weapon: Ice Queen's Scepter (crafted t3 archmage staff, with t3 masterwork archon staff blade)
110 frost damage
10 spirit damage
+15% critical chance
+ 40% attack
+ 7 magic
No special effects, I haven't found any masterworks really suited to a rift mage.

Robes: Ancient elven robes, at level 16 I'll switch to robes of the high keeper and use those until I slay the dragon in the hissing wastes. Purely for aesthetic reason.
Amulet: enhanced magic amulet
Rings: Immolate ring, Ice mine ring
Belt: Superb belt of focus (the one that gives +30%)
Head: None

For my party I usually roll with some mixture of Sera, Cassandra, Solas, and Iron bull. I have solas speced very heavily into the spirit tree and with vielstrike* and stonefist*. This lets him make barriers and weaken enemies so my PC can regen mana easier. Lately I've noticed that Solas isn't very necessary and I can defend myself well enough with just fade cloak and ice wall.

So lastly, does anyone have some advice or alternate builds? I didn't like the lighting tree because the shock+weaken= sleep combo ruined my mana regen. Has anybody tried blizzard yet? How did you like it? My DPS with this build is nowhere near that of my previous assasin, so I'm thinking late game might be pretty difficult (on hard I killed all the dragons by level 18). I don't like to take Cole because his AI is terrible and he dies in every single encounter.

Thanks for reading!

Yeah lol..  In fact I haven't even found a Rift Mage build I like because of this.  All the youtube videos I see showing off how "bad ass" Rift Mage is just ended up with Kids throwing Pull of the Abyss right in the middle of their party.  With friendly fire on you might as well just bendover and grab your ass.

Friendly fire off for now. I'm not that good yet, lol. In Origins I didn't do a mage in nightmare with friendly fire on until my 5th or 6th playthrough.

Now that I think about it, the rift mage isn't really the ideal class for friendly fire but it shouldn't be impossible. Maybe go with 1 tank, another support mage, and a ranged rogue. Carefully control everything with the tactical cam...seems like it'd be a huge pain in the ass though.

My advice for anyone doing nightmare mode is this: don't be afraid to pause as much as you need to for as long as you need to in order to get your party's tactics under control and think about what to do. The game isn't going anywhere.

Also, I'd get Barrier and its upgrade. There's no reason not to.

Right now I'm doing a glass cannon elemental mage, no specializations. Static cage is my bread and butter because I giggle every time it's used effectively. Granted, its usefulness is very situational and I wouldn't suggest it to anyone whose inquisitor sided with the templars. There are also some nice passives in the storm tree as well, like Static Charge and Stormbringer. If you find yourself with some extra ability points to spare then I wouldn't completely write off the storm tree.

Is that 110 frost damage your base damage, or DPS?  It just seems too high for base damage, and not quite high enough for DPS, since that factors in your spirit rune.

My advice.. ignore Pull of the abyss entirely. There are very few times when it is actually useful over veilstrike. You do not often get mobbed by a **** load of enemies that you actually need it.

My build is as follows.

Fire (5)
Immolate+ Wildfire
Flashpoint
Pyromancer
Cleanburn

Frost (6 - 7)
Fade Step + Frost step
Winter's Grasp + Winter's Chill
Mana Surge (Optional - You really should not have enemies getting to you anyway)
Winter Stillness
Frost Mastery

Storm (8)
Energy Barrage + Energy Bombardment
Chain Lightning + Arcing Surge
StormBringer
Conductive
Gathering Storm
Static Charge

Inquisitor
Mark of the Rift

Rift (8)
Veilstrike + Punching down
Stonefist + Shatterstone
Smothering Veil
Restorative Veil
Encircling Veil
Twisting Veil

8 abilities, 8 ability slots. 4 elements.. fire, frost, lightning and spirit damage. Bring a support mage with you say Dorian or Viv.. I prefer Dorian.
I spec Dorian in complete necro tree, complete barrier tree and throw the rest around the other elements for the passives and immunity mitigation.

Total ability points, 28.. this is easy to obtain at the end of the game.. or sooner if you chose to use the amulet of power exploit in crestwood or cheatengine.. but I do not recommend using cheat engine unless you want to add schematics to bypass the god aweful grind.

For my weapon..

Seer staff, Hilted staff grip, Masterwork Archon staff blade.
Everite for T3 lightning damage, Superb Spirit rune.

Great bear hide in all offense leather slots, dragon webbing in offense cloth slots.. Everite in offense metal slots.

Outcome..
14% attack, 35% crit chance, 42% crit damage. I prefer to add a fade touched item.. in this case.. snoufleur skin for 1% health on hit.

If you want to use a masterwork item..
16% attack, 39% crit chance, 47% crit damage.

If you do not care for crit damage as it is only going to boost when you get a crit.. swap dragon webbing for plush fustian velvet or King's willow weave for an attack boost.

Your staff then becomes:
35% attack, 35% crit chance.

If you want to use a masterwork item..
40% attack, 39% crit chance.

For accessories..
Superb amulet of cunning for +5 crit chance bringing your non masterwork staff to 40% crit chance
Superb belt of health.. focus when it gets patched.. more focus.. more focus ability usage.
Superb ring of attack (10%) and superb ring of critical damage (20%).. Have not found a crit chance ring.

Armor, what ever you want. Superior skirmisher helmet with cunning items added will give another what.. 9% crit chance.. If you play with helmets off you won't notice how ridiculous it looks.

I use Dalish scout armor playing as a female elf.. I like the merrill look.

So.. Dalish scout armor.. T3 236 defence non MW..

Base material: Snoufleur skin
35% Ranged resistance (craggy skin or lurker scales.. I prefer lurker scales for colouring)
12% magic resistance (Evernit wool for the green colouring of merril's armor. 14% is max so meh)
Fade touched everite Heal 25% of damage taken over 10 seconds. though you can pick what you wish. +5 guard on hit silverite is also good.. but if you already have snuefleur skin on your weapon. I'd go with something else.. either a spell proc, defence or utility boost
