MESSAGE POPULAIRE !

Florianne is an example of everything that is wrong with recent BioWare games and especially Inquisition. Wicked Eyes was a great quest, full of intrigue and mystery. This is one of the ONLY times in this game that I actually felt like a ****** inquisitor; attempting to puzzle out the assassin's identity.

All until the point of Florianne's idiotic reveal.

Seriously, what kind of a moron reveals her plans to the only entity at the ball who can stop her, and then simply LEAVES the hero behind without seeing him captured/dead? You just gave away your plans and now you're going to take a chance by leaving the only loose end (who shouldn't ****** be there in the first place) behind? Why would ANYONE, let alone an expert at the "game" do something this stupid? Is this a Mortal Kombat story or a deep RPG with complex characters?

This makes me think that BioWare assumes that the player is stupid and is unable to piece out the evidence and find the assassin himself. The quest would've been so much better if you actually had to deduce the assassin from the evidence you gathered and were able to make a mistake (but oh no, god forbid we let the player lose from time to time. Let's just take him by the hand and guide him through the entire game).

It's a Mortal Kombat story.  Seriously, if you stop thinking of Bioware as great writers (they are not, they are mediocre on a good day), you'll be less disappointed in their products.

you say all that like its a recent development in Bioware's writing. It's not.

It's the typical awful bioware exposition, Erimond and Corypheus do it too. Basically they involve oddly specific information in their dialogue for no other reason than exposition. It's not even that subtle, either, which is why it's so terrible.

LET ME TELL YOU ALL OF MY PLANS, INQUISITOR. YOU DIDN'T KNOW THE ANCHOR LETS YOU PASS SAFELY THROUGH THE FADE??? WHICH IS WHAT MY MASTER WANTED?? TO PASS SAFELY THROUGH THE FADE??? WITH THE ANCHOR YOU HAVE NOW?? THAT YOU STOLE FROM HIM????? HAHAHAHAHA YOU DO NOW!!!!!!!!!!

Florianne wasn't awful only because of the exposition, but because of her motivation. A set-for-life noble wants world domination..?

At least it's expected from Erimond as the Venatori are already established as esoteric nutjobs so it isn't too surprising that he wants that. But you're telling me this Orlesian noble coming from a land of self-proclaimed elegance and sophistication is in league with an ancient darkspawn and cultists from Tevinter because she too wants to be a demi-god on Thedas once Corypheus ascends?

Lol, the whole quest is a sledgehammer. Almost every npc you talk to is like "Florianne is acting awfully strange tonight, I wonder why that is *hint hint*" Made me feel even less guilty about letting Celene get stabbed. Seriously, girl, when even the serving maid is giving your cousin the side-eye, you might want to get it together.

Her motivation was satisfactory to me. She's comfortable, but she's irrelevant, which is basically the worst thing that can happen to a lover of The Game. If you let her live, she'll give a deranged monologue about The Game, if you turn her into an agent all her messages are in the context of still playing it. She's an addict. Combined with her codex, which indicates that everyone fails to acknowledge her as anything other than a tool to wield over Gaspard and Celene, I can buy her snapping. Burn the world and rule the ashes type stuff.

Wicked Hearts, Wicked Eyes is such a hot mess. :(

I mean pretty much all the main quests (besides In Your Heart Shall Burn, which I think is fairly good) are a hot mess, but it's the one that bums me out the most, because it had such potential. Intrigue! Court approval! Blackmail! No combat! Dancing! Complex politicking!!!

..but it just fell apart, and doesn't work and Florianne is just a tiny part of that

at least you can make her your jester?

Obviously you didn't play DA2, have Feynriel go to Tevinter, only to run into a 'maiden' (like literally a virgin) he saved via a dream when she fainted upon learning bandits intended to rape her, only to wake up to find them dead. She asks you if you can take her to her love, when you say you don't know where he is, she runs off saying she was going to take a nap so she and her love could be together. "Feynriel, my love, I'm coming!"

THAT was the worst writing ever.

P.S. Yeah... I thought the Florianne thing was a bit, eh.

Hmm you mean basically other than most Villains in adventure and RPGs games as well a fair number of movies the perhaps biggest exception being Ion Irencius.

Villains reveal their plans all the time. This isn't anything new. And no I don't really think it's good writing. But this is far from that quests biggest problem, anyway.

Btw has anyone seen Watchmen? The villain reveals his plan but only after its too late to change it. That was pretty awesome writing.

The villains that are not stupid and don't reveal their plans... are the ones that nobody knows about and run the entire world ... and that never leave the room when the hero is about to be eaten alive by sharks with lasers on their heads...

I found way more annoying to have to dance with that skin-head-duchess ... worst writing? Worst looks and hairdo, as as I am concerned

I think it is symptomatic of Bioware's decision to play things safe in Inquisition. A lot of what they did worked, but they tried so darn hard to make sure every player of whatever conceivable intelligence level could understand the story, that they ram a lot of it down the players throat.

The odd bit is that they otherwise obscure everything else as to how to do this quest. They have eaves dropping, rumors, blackmail, coins, halla statues, and not a great deal of info on how the mechanics work.

heck, they have 3 options for ruler that the player doesn't  really know much about unless they've read the book.

I like the companion writing a lot, but the villain writing was a bit neglected. We are left with a few straw-men, easily dispatched.

Irenicus. Amazing.

Instead of a villans exposition you get:

Jon- "I will no longer listen to the babbling of ignorant children."

Epic. He was a tough nut to crack, but oh such a wonderful villan.

What do you mean recent?  Were you even paying attention during KOTOR?

They are video game stories for RPGs of various types which means after one or two good ones it becomes increasingly difficult to write a good story that can also be played as a game.

Bioware tends to writea few good characters per game and then destroys them by exposing them to the main game's storyline.  Not always, but it's a pattern I've noticed and Bioware isn't the only company guilty of this.

Its believable to me Florianne would help Cory. SHe's selfish and thinks Cory is going to win. Instead of losing everything, life included, she's going to get in good and become more powerful. To her this is just an extension of the game. If some alien power threatened earth I can guarantee you there would be a lot of people willing to collaborate in exchange for their life or more power.

Let me ask but anyone else find Florianne attractive? Yet I felt that they could have expanded on her back story a bit before you confront her.

It's the most classic portrayal of villains and I'm pretty sure it was done on purpose. Everything was exaggerated in Wicked Eyes and Wicked hearts because...Orlais. Exaggerated villains are expected.

At least her behavior was better than her hair cut.

As for Irenicus, his plan would have worked except for his sister.

"Bodhi, take Child of Bhaal out and kill him.  Don't hunt him down, tell him our plans or give him a head start.  Just go out back and kill them.  Can you do that?"

"Um...sure..."

Irenicus' main flaw was the incompetence of his subordinates.

If you watch the cutscene, the inquisitor hides the Anchor from her. Of course she had heard the stories but, I think she thought them just that, stories. She didn't beleive that Quizzy could actually seal rifts and, she expected the demons to kill him/her and, all companions. She was bragging and, as is always the ultimate downfall in the DA world, her price (hubris) got the better of her.

  • If you have to look along the shaft of an arrow from the wrong end, if a man has you at his mercy, then hope like hell that man is an evil man. Because the evil like power, power over people, and they want to see you in fear. They want you to know you are going to die. So they'll talk. They'll gloat.
They'll watch you squirm. They'll put off the murder like another man will put off a good cigar.
So hope like hell your captor is an evil man. A good man will kill you with hardly a word.
