Sorry if something similar has been posted already. This is something I thought of while reading wiki articles.

I was reading about dragons, lyrium, and the veil on the wiki. Apparently dragons were the boss of the land in a time before the veil. That's interesting. That means that at one point, spirits and dragons all lived together. And considering what Kieran said to the dwarfs and what Dagna said when studying lyrium, it is possible that the land was ruled by giant beings such as dragons and titans and the like before the veil was created. I wonder if there were any elves, dwarfs or humans around that time. It seems like something happened that created the veil and perhaps this action also reduced the power and number of dragons in the land. It is also interesting that blood magic and both types of lyrium have effects on the veil. The blood of the dragons were the blood of the world according to Yavana.

If Yavana knew the history of the land, that means that Mythal and the other gods were probably already around during this time. This is probably also the time when "everything sang the same." I am guessing that the dragons and other beings around this time were able to communicate with one language because magic permeated the land.

Then for some reason, someone or some group (Solas and Mythal?) decided that there needs to be more separation between the magical/fade realm and the physical realm. Perhaps it is because it led to a sort of stasis in which nothing ever changed. Perhaps, it was related to dragon gods (who may also be elven gods) having wayyy too much power keeping all other creatures in slavery. Then Solas and/or Mythal decided that the only way the other creatures can have more freedom and rights was for the dragon gods to lose a great deal of their power. The only way to do this is to force-ably separate the magical/spiritual/fade realm from the physical realm. They probably accomplished this using dragon blood + lyrium and that is also why these two material are also able to tear the veil. As a result of this action, most of the dragons' power became locked away and maybe also some of their spirit. That is why they became more like mindless beasts than intelligent beings.

Unfortunately, things did not turn out as Solas had hoped. Without the gods to rule over them, the other creatures (humans, elves, dwarfs, etc) just end up trying to rule over each other and so there was still slavery. It was still the case that beings who had managed to keep some of their magical powers were able to rule over the rest (Tevinter). Now Solas' plan is to remove the veil and spread the magic more equally hoping that that would be a better solution than trying to remove magic all together.

Interesting theory. But more than the dragons' fault I think that spirits and mortals were a threat of each other. Mortals can change a spirit and turn it into a demon; in the other hand we have the "Forgotten Ones" a sort of antithesis of the elven gods, Andruil tried to stalk them on their own home: "The Void" she made an armor of this place but that drove her mad and then she tried to hunt her fellow gods. If that place could do that to a goddess it could be worse for any mortal, in fact, the Void and the Black city could be the same place.
As for the dragons, well, I don't think that they are mindless monsters, Yavana seemed to be just a powerful woman who learned the dragons' language and protected them and the dragons obeyed her but they also disagree with some decisions like allow Alistair go to the Hall of Sleepers. in DA2 Flemeth says that maybe she is a dragon who can shapeshift into a human (which was not true, but I assume that with such magic powers they could do so) and finally, the Old Gods were dragons and ruled Tevinter on its golden age, the veil and the mortal world were already divided before their absence so, I think that rather being stupids, the dragons are aware that most of humans are selfish morons who attempt to hurt anything that they fear.

Interesting, I was blaming it on the dragons because in the game they tend to cause a lot of problems for the places where they live. They kill people, grab livestock etc. If they are intelligent, they don't really seem to care about the well-being of other sapient creatures. I guess we'll see. It might also be the case that there's one group of dragons who are simply power-hungry and another group like Mythal who are more compassionate.
