I personally prefer the aesthetic of swords, both for SnS and 2h, but, aside from Suledins Blade, every sword is outdamaged by an equal level axe or maul, why is this?
I always feel im gimping myself if I stick with a sword

Been wondering this myself.. I wonder if there's a speed difference (not that I've noticed).
Maybe because most people think swords look the best and they wanted to encourage using other weapons. Or something.
Yep, it was probably to encourage diversity.. Could also be why sword schematics seem so dang hard to find in game. I've taken to using cheat engine myself and I copy paste stats from axes over to a sword I like the look of.
It depends outdamaged is relevant. In the case of 2H weapons yes the axe outdamages the 2H sword because the animation is faster. The maul on the other hand offers a completely different approach as it deals single target damage instead of cleave damage.
In the case of SnS however because the animation is generally faster and you have more active skills the higher damage but slower one handed sword is preferable to an axe or a mace, it seems however that unless you are extremely lucky or waste more than a few hours farming you won't be able to keep up with the swords as the 3 best one handed swords schematics are tied to rng chests.
I heard of a way to animation cancel per swing that brings the swords to an advantage but I don't know how to do it.
For one handed weapons swords offer lower dps but higher base damage. Thus ability damage benefits more. Sadly as stated the three best sword schematics are rng drops. To make matters worse, 2 seem not to drop at all, the Split Longsword and the Mastetwork Tevinter Longsword. These are the two good ones. The one that does drop, the Dwarven Longsword, is subpar; it is barely better than a tier 2 sword and worse than the top tier maces and axes that can easily be found
EDIT: Disregard the part about damage. The part regarding drops and the Dwarven sword being subpar hold true though.

False.
All 1 handed weapons depend on their individual main metal slot. An axe with 22 metal has the exact same weapon damage as a sword with 22 metal in their main slot.
The Masterwork Tevinter Longsword has just as much weapon damage as the Serpent's Rage or Griffon Mace.
Within the class of weapon no weapon type has an advantage over the other one.
The Suledin's blade is outdamaged by all masterworked top tier level 3 2handed schematics.

Whoops you are correct. I read somebody having said that before and lacking a MW Tevinter Longsword schematic, as it seems not to drop properly, never had a direct comparison. Just checked on lower end weapons though. The dps is listed as different though which I assume is related to swing speed.
Yup do not judge a weapon by dps as the dps stat in this game is misleading. Always look at the damage of the weapon first.

That I know. I just never did a direct comparison and read somebody else on here saying that swords had higher base damage. I had assumed they were speaking fact as nobody questioned them. It was my mistake.
