So one of my four characters is a Qunari mage.  I felt like this game needs to be played as both a circle (human) mage and an apostate mage, so I went with Qunari, since Dalish have their own thing going for them, don't need to be a mage there.

My human mage is a Knight Enchanter, and once you get the right feel, the build makes itself.  But my Qunari is going to be a bit more traditional mage, staying at range, and I want him to go down the Necromancer route.

I know I should focus on the Fire tree a bit more, with Flashfire and Wall of Fire providing more fear, along with some Ice tree for the stillness mana regen (plus a range freeze is always handy.)  I'm gonna have at least Chain Lightning from the Shock tree, since it never hurts to have full elemental coverage on your mages.  Anything else from the Shock tree I should consider?  I know I probably want to avoid the random lightning strike passive, since the last thing I'd need is to break my own CC.

As for the Necromancer tree, I know I should focus on getting Walking Bomb upgraded.  Horror's got issues, but it's also got a lot of CC potential.  How useful is Haste?  I know I always have my Green Orb of Doom if Haste isn't really worth it.  And how about the zombie spell?  Are those risen dead really useful for big fights?

My experience with the Necro build is that the passives are the best place to focus.  By that I mean Death Siphon, Blinding Terror, Power of the Dead, and Simulacrum.  I would invest most of your spell points into the fire tree. Wall of Fire pairs really well with Necro because it continuously induces panic which Blinding Terror can exploit. Personally, I find it more useful than Horror, but you are going to have to unlock Horror  to get to any thing else on the tree.  I'm less of a fan Flashfire because of the mana cost, but YMMV. As for Necro spells, Walking Bomb was the only one I found regularly useful. That said, its a great spell to have, especially when dealing with fire resistant enemies like rage demons, dragons ext.   For focus, Haste is OK, but given the short duration, I'm guessing you'll generally get more bang for your buck with Mark of the Rift.

Necro shines the most when the bodies start to pile up, so it tends to be more effective against hordes than against lone powerful enemies like story bosses or dragons. Simulacrum and Walking Bomb are probably the only two tree unlocks you will find useful in boss-type fights.

The zombie spell is sort of hit and miss.  If you can manage to capture a big enemy (pride demons, and red templar colossi come to mind) among a horde of little minions you can really ruin someone's day.  On the other hand, inadvertently bringing back a demon that's part of fade rift can lengthen the time it takes to close the thing, which can be a little annoying. Most of the enemies I manage to grab come toward the end to the battle, which is less useful.  It was a spell I felt like I could live without.

I hope that was helpful.

Spirit mark can also bug out and create immortal, non aggressive enemies that prevent you from completing objectives which require all enemies dead. Use with caution and, it's incredibly annoying when the necro (forgot to turn it off on Dorian) spirit marks a dragon.

I'm running a full Necromancer playthrough right now and it hasn't glitched once.  Besides you can manually shut the thing off under normal conditions.

If you play with friendly fire off then Walking Bomb can be pretty decent, but I'd rather have Spirit Mark because it's more fun (not to mention cheaper too).  I'm assuming you do play with it off because you mention Chain Lightning, which is horrible otherwise.  I'm not sure if you've ever tried Static Cage but I think that thing is the best spell in the game.

Also, Quanari seem to like lightning as well.  See Serabaas.

The other nice thing about going into the Fire tree with a Necromancer is that fire spells are relatively cheap compared to the other trees. Necromancer mana regen isn't great, and the spells in its tree are expensive to begin with, so pairing that up with expensive Lightning spells like Static Cage seems like a bad idea.
