Same problem here. Trying to install DirectX from the CD right now.

Edit: That fixed my issue - Installed it off Disc one not two tho.

Does anyone have any ideas at all?
I mean it's been 5 hours since I got the game and it's still the same damn error...

Jaymo try this link you can try to repair DirectX HOWEVER the best solution is always a fresh install or restore if things are broken like this.

Try it if you like: http://blog.brothers...repair-directx/

Your easiest solution is to restore to factory condition from the partition on your hard drive.  If you call Dell they can tell you how to do this.  Backup your important data first.  This is the safest

The game will require BOTH Direct3D setups (and should have installed Dx9 automatically it that wasn't there already). Whatever is the default to the OS version for Vista / Windows 7 goes first, plus Dx9 after that.

It's a problem with the game recognizing the directx. I build computers for fun. You just have to re update the drivers for some reason. Couldn't ever contact my manufacturer cause then i would have to contact myself and they send people places with people in white coats when you attempt that I reckon. But, updated DX so we'll see how it works out.

In some few instances. you can locate the particular .dll on the 'net, get a copy, and put it where it's supposed to be, but with Direct3D, that's not usually sufficient (by which I mean that if one file drom Direct3D is corrupted or missing, others are likely to be missing also).  In this instance, the Direct3D version is Dx10, which matches to Vista.  The first thing to do is install a fresh Dx10, then if you skipped the Dx9 on the game disk (which you should not have done), after correcting Dx10, then install Dx9.

Had this same issue, figured out the solution. Disclaimer: "Solution" in reference to having solved the problem for _me_. (And as a note: Vista 64bit, E6600 Core2, 280gtx, 6gb ram, etc.)
Anyway.

1) Go to your "My Computer" or whatever you have it labeled as.
2) Right-click the disk drive with your ME2 disk (I had swapped to disk 1 at this point, so that may be something to consider), click "Explore" (for Vista/7, I think XP is still "Open" or something) to get into the disk's directory system.
3) Go into the folder labeled "DirectX".
4) Locate the file: DXSETUP.EXE and run it.

Thanks--running Vista64 Ultimate and had the same issue. Ran the DXSETUP for the 2nd DVD and now all is well.

Fixed the issue, extracted the .dll and put it into System32 folder. Seemed to work, but the game crashed when the Lazarus project cutscene ends...

I had same problem on trying to hit play and got missing d3dx10_39.dll. I have Vista 64 bit SP2. I did an explore
on the install CD disk 1. Went to directx folder scrolled down to dxsetup double clicked and let it ran. Had no problems starting the program then. Just now starting it, so I don't know if I'll have any further problems.

I was getting a cryptographic error when I installed DX. I re-ran the DX Setup program on the DVD #2 as Administrator and it finished without a problem. My "d3dx10_39.dll is missing" error disappeared.

All~

For some reason Windows 7 (X64 or X32) does not install DirectX into a folder (unless hidden).  Anyway tthe missing .dll file is a 9.0C file and untill EA/BioWare get off their rear-end to support DirectX 11 the game will not work.

This game is also very buggy and I have yet to see a patch... I knew I should have bought a PlayStation 3...LOL.:D

Doofus42 - Thank you.

All others - Doofus42 posted a link to Microsoft's DirectX installer. I just did a fresh install of Win7. I aborted the DirectX installer at the end of the Mass Effect 2 install which is likely why most of us are having this issue. :)

People keep saying to install DirectX from the second disc, but I get an error message and installation fails. Please Help! Worked fine on XP, but Win7 is being stupid!!

Why is it on every game forum there are ALWAYS people trying to run games on non-gaming spec'd systems? Or am I just being a jerk again?

I really think that it started getting this way when consoles got a little closer to having power like a ten year old PC had, at prices like five year old PCs cost, but easier to use because of standardization.  Originally, consoles were pretty weak sauce.

As time passes, of course, the school systems in the western nations turn into garbage, and the young get no education worthy of the name any more, so they are clueless about everything.
