I finally got the stomach to turn down bull on like my 3rd playthrough.

Vivienne can some top notch banter with Bull for example.

Sera on the other hand is just a bellend.

Vivienne: In my pro mage run. She supported the Circles and since I wanted no Circle allies I said nope.

 

Blackwall: My reasons, I don't like him and I can never get his PQ to pop up so recruiting usually means I'm stuck with him.  RPG reasons, A lone Grey Warden in the woods seems useless to me and I wonder why he's more concerned with helping some random dudes then finding his missing brethren.

 

Sera: Will never recruit her canonically.  She sounds shady from the start and I already have Varric and Bianca.

 

IB: My reasons, I won't recruit him in my female elf run because there is no way I would want him with Dorian.  RPG reasons, I don't think it's smart having a Qunari spy at your back.

 

I could rpg reasons not to recruit Dorian and Cole but they'll always get recruited lol!

Sera and Iron Bull. They're both the weakest links when it comes to the main cast as far as I'm concerned. Sera has very little depth or growth and Varric provides much better witty banter and jokes than the stupid 'butt' jokes that Sera spews out every five minutes. They feel very out of place given how the rest of the game is written.

 

Iron Bull is just another dull over-sized brute - he doesn't interest me in the slightest.

On my second playthrough I did not bother recruiting Sera. I would have probably skipped Cole as well, given that my current Quizzy is a dual-wielding rogue, and am unlikely to bring another rogue along. On my mage playthrough, I completely forgot about him in the attic of the tavern... But I chose the Templar side my second time around, so Cole got a much better intro than before. So, I recruited him - though I am very likely to forget about him again

IB has some pretty good banter, though. Did you try recruiting him at least once? Did you get the chess game banter between him and Solas? It's pretty awesome, and based on a game played by famous chess masters

Only companions that I could not play the game without are Solas, Casandra, Dorian, Varric and Cole, so the only one that it's optional and I still never reject is Dorian. The rest haven't been there for quite a few pt, though other times I let them all join, even if only for the banter.

Has anyone done a For Science! run and tried to eliminate all the mages? It seems like its very possible to end up with zero mages at the end of the game.

I can see the point when it comes to Sera, but it seemed out of place for a qunari mercenary to be judgmental about her methods.

I agree that there are some weak links in the cast. I would say that as much as I like Viv I think that she, IB, and Sera are the weakest of them all. It would have been nice to get more out of Viv with her personal quest but I was just left with "meh" She usually just sits at skyhold until she becomes Divine and afterwards I have no reason to ask her to stay in the group.

I picked them all up the first time around, but on a second run I would skip Sera... she added nothing to the game since I only used her twice before she got on my nerves and earned a permanent spot on the bench.

I might give him another chance in a future game. I'm sure his banter would appeal to me more than Sera's at least!

Not yet. But I may turn down everyone that I can. They are mostly White Andrastian and the ones that are not have caused all sorts of problems.

 

 

Would kill for a companion with a unique point of view that is not an annoying jedi mind trick of an ally.

Recruited everyone on my first and second playthrough, because of the nightmare difficulty. Didn't bother recruiting Viviene on my third since I'm doing a casual run.

To add to my previous comment: Companions who do not suck on Andraste's teat so fiercely would be welcome.
