Next play-through I don't plan on recruiting Bull and only sort of recruiting Sera.

-Bull: Because I don't want a Qunari-spy having access to the inquisition.

-Sera: I will recruit for the jar of bees, and then annoy until I kick her out, mostly because I can.

Vivienne can some top notch banter with Bull for example.

Sera on the other hand is just a bellend.

I have no idea what that means, but if you don't do at keast one playthrough with her and solas in the same party, you're missing some pertty interesting foreshadowing.

More generally...some of you are missing some important dialogue. Next game you'll be all 'Whhhat? where's that come from? lolol

Yeah, I have no clue why some people think that about him... he's like the anti-stereotype of a muscleman. On the outside it seems like it with his all-talk, but not at all once you get to know him lol.

Yep, exactly. I loved him, and his romance is pretty amazing too.

Sera, not because she's a criminal but because she doesn't really undergo any kind of character development she's basically there for lowbrow humor and to call everything and everyone she doesn't like stupid while taunting and/or murdering them.

Sera is fun and all, but objectively yeah, there's no point in recruiting her.

The Inquisition already has spies, and according to her the "Friends of Red Jenny" aren't even that.

Just a band of pranksters and thieves.

You can always listen to it on Youtube, besides with that banter bug in place there is gonna be a lot of people missing out on content anyway. Not much of a reason to recruit anyone, especially optional characters who may not even be in the next game.

It's sort of funny that Sera, Vivienne, and Blackwall are pretty much the least popular companion rogue, mage, and warrior, yet they're arguably the most useful of each in combat. (If I ever decide to put my try-hard pants on and try for a nightmare trophy, that would definitely be my squad.) I wonder if that was purposeful design choice as an incentive to recruit characters you might otherwise find distasteful or just an amusing coincidence.

Some of the banter dialogue leads me to believe that Sera is both more important than she seems and will be a factor in future plot. Yes, she annoys my inquisitor, lol, but I don't think she's a trivial character.

No. Sometimes it takes a bit of 'headcanon' to make it work (like accepting Cole on a pro-Chantry run, or Vivienne on an pro-mage one), but I always take them. It would make the game feel emptier to remove the best thing about it.

The closest I ever got to that was ignoring Oghren and Anders, because I dislike them. Even then, if I'm playing a fervently anti-templar Hawke, I'd make an effort with Anders because it'd be in-character.

I turned down Sera and Cole in my second (current) playthrough, because I'm playing a rogue and won't have any use for them out in the field. Have to say, I already regret it, just for the missed content, but I've gone too far to go back and keep them around.

I really want to get to know Cole, but I'm saving that for next playthrough. I dismissed Sera because I figured she's gonna disapprove of a lot of my choices anyway, and also because I'd romanced in my first game. Going back to being just friends doesn't feel right, yet  .... man, that Cassandra friendship is gonna be tough next game.

In my second and more pragmatic playthrough, I'll probably leave Sera out because she serves no purpose and Vivienne, for being a mage Nazi.

Well, it's gonna be a real sausage fest but it can't be helped.

I told Vivienne she couldn't join in my third play-through.  Though, I'll admit that the later parts of the game weren't as fun.  I missed having someone who I always disagreed with and seeing the Vivienne Disagrees was a very satisfying perk.

Viv. After first PT forcing myself on not killing her on-spot, finally I decided that it'll just be easier for us both to not... be at each other's side. That's all.

Well, to list the characters and whether I would get rid of them or not.

Cassandra: Wouldn't get rid of even if I could.

Cullen: Wouldn't get rid of even if I could.

Cole: Wouldn't get rid of.

Dorian: Wouldn't get rid of.

Leliana: Wouldn't get rid of even if I could, though on thinner ice than the others like this.

Josephine: Definitely wouldn't get rid of even if I could.

Rainier: Choose to not get rid of him because those options aren't punishments for him.

Sera: Really tempting.

Solas: Leaves anyway so doesn't really matter.

The Iron Bull: Would rather hire the Chargers minus him rather than get him as a bonus.

Varric: Would get rid of but it is impossible to do so.

Vivienne: Really tempting.

I recruited them all on my first run, but on a subsequent play-through I would skip Sera entirely. On my first run, I only used Sera for a few times before she got on my nerves, and she doesn't have much to offer or that useful. I already have Varric anyway. I threaten Sera to leave my party after completed her personal quest. Frankly, I don't even miss Sera's content since it just gives me a headache. She simply feels out of place, and doesn't fit with the Inquisition. I also find Sera shady, and I don't understand her real motivation to join the Inquisition. Like Solbranthius pointed out she has very little depth or growth, and her "butt jokes" and "toilet humor" is not even close to funny, and Varric or Dorian provides much better witty banter and jokes.

I might not be fond of some characters, but extra dialogue, interesting character quests with conversations and just some extra banters are kind of worth it. Although neither Sera nor Vivienne have much of either, I guess - fetching tomes and completing War Table operations isn't my most interesting pasttime. Still, I'm a completionist.

The moment Sera casually gave me a death threat I kicked her ass out. A leader doesn't have want or need of that kind of bullshit.

Hmm, never - largely because I'm interested in all characters, even the ones with whom I might have a difference of opinion or a personality conflict (not that there's usually much of a personality conflict because I, well, like almost everyone...).

Nope. With one exception I love them all. And even the one I don't love, I don't hate, I just find boring. I've got no reason to turn anyone away until maybe I do a crazy ******* paranoid inquisitor.

Nope never, I like having them all hang around even if I don't like them.  If I don't like them I can have fun being horrible to them.

The closet I came was potentially kicking out Sera after I recruited her.  I had just done that quest where she sends you after that noble and I was questioning the guy and Sera the nutter shoots him midway through.  We then got into a huge fight back at Skyhold and got  "Sera disapproves" after "Sera disapproves"....but in the end she stuck around.  So close though....I was soooooo tempted to kick her out.

I don't turn anyone down, even if I don't use them, it just seems lame to do so. When it comes to these world saving plots my m.o. is usually "we need all the help we can get." If I were going to do it I would need compelling reasons.

For example, if you side with the templars without having gone to Redcliffe and having met Dorian, I can see how it would come across as really convenient that this Tevinter mage shows up, says he "risked his life to get here" and tells us that the Venatori are coming. You even have the opportunity to suggest this during his recruitment dialog at Skyhold.

The Iron Bull and Sera are a couple of others that don't really come across as trustworthy or reliable initially. The best way for a spy to win their way in would certainly be to do exactly as Bull does. I can't give a compelling reason for Sera. I think reaction to her is felt in your gut rather than in your head.

When siding with the mages Cole just appears out of nowhere and is really weird about it to boot.

Vivianne almost reminds me of Morrigan and her reason for helping out: I'm a part of this world too and it certainly does not benefit me to see it, nor the institutions I depend on, destroyed. You have the opportunity to ask her all about it in the initial meeting and she presents herself very well.

I don't think there is a compelling reason to turn down Blackwall at all. From the initial meeting he seems very straight forward and appears to be what he presents himself as. I'm sure there are players that thought there was something hinky about him all along and felt vindicated after the big reveal, but it was a total surprise to me.

I'm surprised that IB is getting a few nods.  I can say honestly I found him underwhelming but I was hit hard with the banter bug so I'm not sure if it was my expectations being pretty much too high of him or just the lack of conversations that fail to illuminate him as a character who I like a lot.

Mind you I'll never not recruit him or any other companion (and I don't hate him so yeah).
