I left Blackwall to rot in jail. Does that count? I brought him along sometimes and liked him well enough before his reveal. I just couldn't deal with him after I found out what he did. I had no desire to offer a place for him to find his 'redemption'; his crimes were just too great. He murdered an entire family, lied to his men and allowed his men to take the fall for his actions all for gold. I just don't buy the whole idea that he's become a better man. He hid from his crime for years under the name of another man all while his men suffered the consequences. His excuses for why he hid are just that, excuses. He could have faced the consequences at any time and, frankly, he deserved to face the consequences. His last ditch effort, save the last man about to hang, was too late.

Phew, I've been holding that rant in for awhile.

It's sort of funny that Sera, Vivienne, and Blackwall are pretty much the least popular companion rogue, mage, and warrior, yet they're arguably the most useful of each in combat. (If I ever decide to put my try-hard pants on and try for a nightmare trophy, that would definitely be my squad.) I wonder if that was purposeful design choice as an incentive to recruit characters you might otherwise find distasteful or just an amusing coincidence.

That's only sort of true, Champion, Tempest and Knight Enchanter are very good specs but the AI doesn't handle them very well. Blackwall will uselessly use his invulnerability and other abilities when he doesn't need them at all, Vivienne will only use spirit blade when enemies engage her in melee otherwise she uses other spells/ranged attacks and Tempest is all about timing the potions right which the AI fails with.

The AI controls the first three companions better than the rest aka Cassandra, Varric and Solas. Solas will have unlimited mana, Artificer is full of passives (which doesn't need much of a control) and the AI uses traps only when enemies get close. Templar is also handled very well, Cassandra will dispel barriers on her own and detonates combos on her own as well.

The moment Sera casually gave me a death threat I kicked her ass out. A leader doesn't have want or need of that kind of bullshit.

Sera isn't that bad as a person, but she almost seems to mock you sometimes.

But I've managed to put her in her place by choosing the right dialogue options.

I take all help though pick and chose whom I bring out on quest and stuff mostly Vivvene stays in Skyhold in her little spot! I may dislike Sera but she a good archer so I let her come on dragon hunts with me. While Blackwall comes on a view quest here and there mostly to see dialouge changes.

Currently on 1st playthrough, recruited everyone.

Though, realisitically, I don't see how some of the members would ever be actually considered... Sera "hurr durr I steal britches lol u wot m8?". Cole's just some strange guy that has a helping fetish. Varric is just some dwarf. Iron Bull has mercenaries, we have a hulk soldiers. Blackwall is just some old lone warrior.

Whereas Solas has knowledge on the Fade, which is the main predicament. Dorian has knowledge on the enemy group. Cassandra rebuilt the freaking group, and Viviene has status/connections that could help.

(That's just being realistic though. I absolutely love Cole, and my Quizzys will take/refuse people for different reasons)

I would've done the same... If my Quizzy didn't wanna tap that.

I've had him in my party since I got him. Havn't done his quest, but got the just of it from the internets. At the time of recruiting, he's still just a lone Warden. Not much of a help. He doesn't even really want to join anyway.

I turned down Bull because of the horns. Every time he came up behind me I thought something was going to attack me. Didn't need Varric, didn't like Viv or Solas. I'm always picking Sera, Cass and Dorian.  Left Cole in the corner in every play through.

After recruiting one of them, is there a time limit or you can kick them out at any point in the game?

The only one you can kick out whenever is Sera. The others have to hit high enough negative approval that they ditch you.

I agree and I think the claim that he is redeemed is ridiculous. The first thing he starts doing is comparing the IQ and the organization to himself.  That's not someone who is sorry but a person trying to knock those he lied to and victimized down to his level. All he had to do was just be sorry but he couldn't even manage that without being a ******. I released him thinking I would have the option to kill him only to not have the option. So I made him a slave to the Inquisition. I find it funny that he thinks the world cares about him to the point where he claims the organization will fall for releasing him.  Now that is the epitome of arrogance.

Cole: through the Templar path, yeah, he may have helped me defeat the demon, but... so did Mouse. Even if I went the mage route and Solas could tell me that he is not, in fact, a demon, spirits are hardly better. Spirits are driven to fulfill their own aspect. In his case, it's compassion. I cannot guarantee I can/will always satisfy any one single value or principle of a spirit to keep it happy, and compassion is hardly something that can be expected out of a group like the Inquisition.

All that said, he is actually my favorite companion. I just need a decent RP reason to recruit him.

Iron Bull: Qunari spy. Just because he is upfront with you about it does not suddenly mean he cannot steal sensitive info and sell you out (turns out, his name is "liar"). And to many people, religion is the single most important thing in their lives. 'Bull's first loyalty is the Qun, not me. I respect that, but it also means that if there is a conflict between his religion and my wishes, then I am at the disadvantage.

Also did not like the idea of him reporting back to the Qun, even if he says he won't report back anything too sensitive (yeah, okay "Hissrad"). I value subtlety, indirection, basically all the Leliana kind of things (she was my first choice for almost every War Table mission), so I see this as a leak. To his credit, Bull handles your rejection pretty graciously.

Sera I only accepted because I knew that Cole was not likely to be someone I would want to recruit, and thus, I needed an extra party member with rogue skills in case something were to happen to make Varric unavailable to me. However, I identified her as someone whom I would need to be very careful with and keep happy to avoid having problems with her, because I am in many ways the kind of elitist that Sera takes issue with. In the end, I think this dynamic ended up making me enjoy her very much. But my canon Qunari Inquisitor did not want any part of her, giving his trademarked seal-of-disapproval: "No™" (interestingly enough, Sera makes a quip about Qunari and the word "no").
