I am a big fan of both.
Also, two questions for all...
1) I feel kind of weird just starting sending people messages on Origin. Is there a chat thread specifically for ME PC players?
2) I have a mic but I have no idea how well it works or how the chat system works in-game, since it seems like no-one I've played with has a mic? I have not heard any voices, at least. The only other FPS Multiplayer I've played was via LAN so we just shouted at each other, and I always typed in WoW. But, yeah, any advice for mics?
I don't know of a PC-only chat thread, but Combat Strategy is basically one big (crazy) chatroom about ME3 multplayer:

My own approach is that if people add me on Origin, next time I see them online I say hello and exchange a few words. I'd like to know if they are totally deranged/racist/weird before I attempt to play with them...!
As to mics, some people talk a lot, some never say a word. As with real life, it's easier to talk to people that one kind of knows. I'd suggest getting some games with people that have added you from here, and asking beforehand if they will talk you through the game.
The best test of your mic setup is to make a test call using Skype. Although success with Skype doesn't guarantee success with ME3.
Not sure about message etiquette myself, since I only hopped on the BSN bandwagon when I returned to ME3 just recently.
As far as mic stuff goes, in-game voice is actually pretty good - judging by the folks I've played with who use it. A fair bit of that probably depends on the quality of your hardware. Even if in-game voice lets you down, I think I'm right in saying there are a few folks with access to Teamspeak/Ventrilo/Mumble and the like. Even failing that, I could always check with the gang at OTG and see if anyone would mind my using a room for ME3 games now and then.
Unfortunately, the game sound setup will occasionally refuse to work with certain hardware, regardless of quality. I have a decent mic and an ordinary mic, the decent one doesn't work at all in ME3 (works fine elsewhere) but the ordinary one does.
Teamspeak and the like will work well for an arranged group that can schedule their games. For playing random pug games, the in-game system is your best bet.
