What to do with Solas?

So, I'm building my mage around the elemental talent trees. I had figured, why muck around with specializations on my first run-through of the game when there's so much awesomeness to be explored in the regular trees? I like to keep two mages in the group. So... At level 17, my build looks something like this:

Spirit

Barrier+

Storm

Energy Barrage

Chain Lightning+

Gathering Storm

Stormbringer

Static Cage+

Inferno

Immolate

Flashpoint

Pyromancer

Fire Mine+

Winter

Winter's Grasp+

Winter Stillness

The build itself works well as a high damage, high risk mage build. There are a few lines of defense in there, however. Static Cage and Fire Mine... *giggle* I'm taking my time with the game, trying to do everything, explore everywhere. I'm level 17 and I'm nowhere near doing Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts yet.

I like having Solas in the group because of my own personal biases. What would be a good build for him, given my inquisitor's tendency towards AoE damage output? I'm obviously going to use his Rift Mage stuff. My main concern is whether or not I should bother with both sides of the Rift Mage tree for him. I'm inclined to only focus on the right side (Stonefist, etc.)

Right now I have his Rift Mage abilities maxed out, except the focus skill, and I've gone down the left side of the Spirit tree to get Revival and Rejuvenating Barrier. I'm thinking of maybe doing away with the left side of his Rift Mage tree and putting those points in Winter or something.

Nuh nuh. My inquisitor is head over heels for Blackwall. Or maybe just his epic beard. Who knows?

Not sure how to build him either.  I am always controlling my Warrior and the AI sucks so bad.  Seems like when I go to control him he is always out of Mana.  Thought a rift mage should never have problems with mana?  Or maybe I don't have him built right and his AI setting are wrong.  Haven't figured out that part of the game yet.

I build him in more of a support/ CC role. So a mix of Spirit/Winter/Rift. I don't spec him much for damage but more for supporting the fighters and controlling the battlefield. He seems to work best in this function.

Which Mage would be the damage mage then?  Dorian?  Viv is up in the battle with the whole KE thing.  I thought Solas could be a mix of support and damage with the whole firestorm thing.

Depends on the build. My first playtrough, I was the damager mage. For the second, Dorian is spec'd to do so.

Solas is level 15 (17 Ability Points).  Should I go Fire and Rift Tree?  Storm Tree and go for Static Cage.  Do I need Dispel for him or is Barrier enough?  Then if I go Pyro with him I can't with Dorian.  I want to eventually run with 2 mages and an Archer.  As I will be the main tank.

I like Solas on AI as a barrier casting winter mage, no big deal to pause and tell him to take a mana pot in a tough fight. I play an inferno heavy KE so, Solace is ice, Viv electricity, Dorian pure spirit, each with thier specializations of course. That way I have a mage for whatever I need for those dragons. All of them doo well, jsut have to know how to play off each one. Dorian is not DPS for me, he's protection and CC, Viv is the best DPS nex to me and, Solace is strictly ranged dps with minimal AO or cc so, others in the party need what he lacks.

The beig hold back is having a set party and not using everyone for what they are best at.

It's a solid build for a rife mage tho personally i would move the point from energy barrage to clean burn to improve your cooldowns

I got something that works for me.  I got him Barrier, The left side of Rift (for rejuvenating veil) down to PotA. He's got Pyro for the passives and firemine, and I got him A left side of Storm down to Lightning Cage.  He's been doing good.  I control him to start some battles so I can get the Pull and Firemine (when applicable).  Other times I cast Cage and then bombard with the other Lightning Spells when it's an enemy who is fire resistant.  I'm getting more out of him now than I ever did.

I could never get barrier to sit right with Solas or my inquisitor speced as a rift mage, Vivienne seems to fit being barrier support more to me i spec her with the rejuvenating barrier and knight protector.

This is what i run on my inquisitor: http://www.rpg-gamin...3342853a65a757

But for only 345 coin I can re spec again.  I might even respec Cole as an Archer.  Who knows.  I like having that option.  See what works best for me.  But controlling Solas at the beginning of a fight helps me out a lot.
