Yeah, I bought one for the crappy Deus Ex mobile game port to PC, but didn't find much improvement with. There is certainly a place for controllers, but for me they are in the living room, not at my computer. I prefer the precision and speed of a mouse any day. I grew up with them however (controllers too, but M/KB was my first love).

I use a Logitech Gameboard as well for pretty much every game I play, wouldn't be without it.

I wouldn't say the PC version is unplayable. But it is thourobly unenjoyable.  I doesn't even scratch what DA:O felt like on the PC

Don't get me wrong, DA:O was a breath of fresh air and Gods know I have embraced the whole deal as a result of that one game, but you can't keep producing the same thing time after time, and I think fair play to Bioware for them doing something different each time. YES DA:O was Awesome but that was then and that was that.

It's time to move on!

It's never time to move on from proper peripheral support for the platforms you're selling, and that's what this topic boils down too. Game styles? I agree with you, but poor ports and neglected diligence are always wrong.

I got used to it but things like ladders and not being able to click something and have my character walk to it and interact is frustrating.

The whole interface seems to be busy work. No quick weapon sets, no tactics, limited 8 ability tool bar etc.

With a bit of remapping of the keybinds I actually have every few problems with the PC controls.  It feels very similar to a lot of the controls I have used in other games.

Not a Bioware fanboy here, but I don't dislike the controls for the PC. It did the job fine and never had trouble really. I really enjoyed my first playtrough.

But I haven't experienced the alternative.

I've never played any game on a console. Yeah I TRIED Assasins Creed, bout an xbox360 just to try it. Contols were agrivating, frustrating and made zero sence to me. "Press LR T1, R5... WTF? Let's jsut have press w to walk, r for right, l for left, b for back up hold mousr button to steer/turn camera and steer witht he mouse. Nice and simple, the way it's prett much been for KB+M for ages.

Yes Tactical and, especially the HOLD command needs work but the overall PC controls are fine. I'd demand a refund if I were forced to use a console controller to play - those are confusing and frustratingly awkward for me. I suppose those that give good PC reviews are those, like me that learned tro game on PC and never learned or made any effort beyond one frustration attempt to use a console controller.

Why the hell do I have to hold down a mouse button to steer or aim my character?  I'm holding a mouse button 90% of the time, this didn't raise any eyebrows during testing?

I steer and aim with the WASD keys and don't even have to touch the mouse when running around, except for when adjusting the tilt of the camera. I definitely don't am holding a mouse button 90% of the time.

Haha, really?  People were using words like "unplayable", "broken", and "disaster", and that didn't prepare you?

I used a gamepad, so my computer version controlled just fine! lol

It's hardly unplayable, or broken. Or a disaster for that matter.

If you don't like the buttons you can just remap them, what's the problem with that?

Well, pay a bit of attention to people who constantly defend the game in whatever thread, and notice how there is always the same three to five names appearing.

Yeah, like you couldn't say the same thing about people hating on the game.

Let's face it; these forums have maybe a few dozen people with extreme opinions, who post the most frequently.

normal movement scheme on many pc games is to press both mouse buttons, so how is pressing only one a flaw?

As a exclusively PC gamer I can't remember a game that uses that as a default setup. Care to throw some examples out? Not necesarily doubting you in this case as much as assuming that you maybe play a genre I don't.

As for the main point of the thread all I can say for the controls is that you get used to them eventually.

Not exactly glowing paise but there you go. With MMO style controls stapled onto an action RPG that about as good as it's likely to get.

I'm still uncertain as to why it's such a massive deal that you have to hold a mouse button down.
Is it really that much if a problem?

You can remap all the controls, you could if you wished pretty much play the entire game using just the keyboard.
Why is it such a problem?

I'll admit that I read that as you saying that holding both mouse buttons to move was normal for PC games. That's what I get for reading fast on the clock.

I still maintain that it's unusual for a game this real time action focused.

And maybe they improved it in the sequels but Gothic 1 controlled like drunk pig.

As far as I'm concerned the sticks to look instead of mouse was the hardest. I always remake my PC controls to my own standard layout and it's every much as arbitrary as a controller's input names. The advantages of controllers is that most games uses almost the same layout, once you're used to it in one game, you're pretty much set for ever.

There is room in gaming for every media, more people should try and embrace more than one. It gives you access to so many games it's a shame to stay in your ivory tower (unless you're all about RTS, I haven't seen a good one except on PC so far).

It seems it is those of use who have never played an MMO that are not accustomed to having to hold down a mouse button to navigate an area. Typical action rpg's still use a 1st and 3rd person shooter control scheme, which is what I'm used too, and an option I'd like added to the game. I mean I'd like to avoid carpal tunnel if at all possible. Having the mouse automatically in free look seems much more natural, not to mention faster than having to hold a mouse button every time I want to adjust my gaze or fine tune my direction.

Those of you who have been brought up with it as the norm, I understand it's no big deal for you. For the rest of us, it's an annoying, needless and costly (in battle) hinderance. I would just like the option to control the game the way I prefer to control it.

I have little issues with the controls. I haven't played the previous Dragon Age games, so I had no expectations of how the controls would be. At first, I thought holding down the 'R' key for auto attack seemed weird, but I got used to it instantly. However, I do come from MMOs, FPSs (and RPGs) and I don't think the controls are that different from other games I played. I have yet to play a melee class though, and I have a feeling it might be a bit trickier.

I would never consider using a controler on PC.

The current controls mechanism are an insult to the PC, its as if they used all there time perfecting the game for consoles, then thought, OK now what about the PC... then said "it'll do".

I have around 70 hours total in this game, and even though I needed an hour to get used to the controls, I don't think the controls are poorly designed.

I would like to hear from the "haters" what control layout they would suggest for improving the game experience.
