It's the nose for me, as well. Mostly I have a hard time with the length of the nose / the size of the upper lip. Every time I think I've gotten the length right, then I get in-game and my character looks like

bNQ5BCx.png

That's because there's something wrong in the CC with the nose when you transition from character creation to the actual game.

On the left, Hawke right before I hit Accept Changes to bring him into the game.

On the right, the actual guy I got ingame.

He's either permanently sneering or there's just something screwed up with the noses in the CC. I've had this problem with all my Hawkes, and at least one Inquisitor.

Eyebrows are definately aggravating because we have the least amount of control over them and only a handful that weren't torn off a Muppet. There really needs to be sliders for eyebrow spacing and angle.

The eyebrows are especially awful. And the the shape/size/angle of the eyebrow can completely transform how a face looks, so weird they gave us so little control over it. Cassandra with those stupid, upturned, "who me?" eyebrows would seem completely ridiculous.

******. Everything. Seriously, my list would be shorter if I mentioned what I didn't struggle with: eye colour. I love fiddling with eye colour. Whoever came up with the two colour system is a beautiful person and I want to have his/her babies. Everything else? Frustration. Are the eyes too sunken? Did I tilt the eyes too much? Is the forehead too broad? Are those the lips that manage to always look ever so slightly open? Will those eyebrows work with all the facial expressions? Should I bring them lower? Is that lip shade going to look too pink in game instead of the darker, almost bruised colour I want? Has my jaw fiddling made him look too axe faced? Is this the red that looks almost kinda auburn or is this the red that looks like someone spilled paint on his hair? Did I make his nose too long? Are his nostril screaming nose job? Is the way his ears are clipping through his hair the okay this or that side of unacceptable? Do I want the elfy-schemy looking eyes or the slightly sleepy schemy looking eyes? Am I really prepared to deal with extremely elfy-schemy looking eyes for the rest of the game? Is that upper lip-contour really communicating what you need it to communicate? OHMIGAWD WHY DID YOU CHANGE THAT IT WAS PERFECT NOW YOU'LL NEVER GET IT LOOKING RIGHT AGAIN JUST START OVER.

The cheeks. If I try and change them they always end up bumpy. I really wish there was an undo button.

Jawline, Jaw size and the nose were my main problem during my Mass Effect days, but for Inquisition I think I've finally have a decent idea about how to make my characters look like real people without out-of-the-ordinary facial proportions.

I'd strongly recommend taking a look at this topic : http://forum.bioware...al-proportions/

I'm sure it will help you guys a ton, I learnt most of the facial proportions during art class a couple of years before (as an avid artist myself), so I didn't have any difficulty with memorizing them.

Though that doesn't mean I didn't play through the prologue at least 8-9 times until I got my character to look the way I wanted to and learnt every line of the prologue by heart. :)

Sadly, that only works for humans.

Elves, dwarves and Qunari have different proportions to take into account.

Like elves have larger eyes and longer noses, dwarves have large noses and chins/jaws and Qunari have a more draconic look than human.

But for humans, that realistic facial thingie is wonderful =P

Still can't make anything near as good as MelissaGT though.

You know, there's precedent for that. In DAO, when you created a .mop file in the toolset and then modified it in the in-game CC, some (but not all!) nose sliders were disregarded by the CC and you had to fix the nose every time. It got to the point where I never bothered to customise the nose in the toolset when creating a .mop file.

It could very well be that something is disregarded when going from CC to in-game in DAI, as well.

I actually have problems with jaw/chin. People's noses/eyes/mouths are so varied IRL so I have no issue doing those. But the jaw and chin? I never really notice people's jaws/chins!

I honestly don't know which part of the CC it is that give me trouble, but every single male elf I have created has a "horse face."  When I look at them directly, as if I were facing them head on, they look fine.  But when I turn them to the side and look at their profile, it's like a slanted line.  The entire face slopes outward starting from the brow down to the chin so that the entire region of the nose, mouch, jaw, and chin stick out from the face like a snout.  I've tried changing the position of each of those areas to move them inward so they don't stick out from the face so much, but to me the result looks equally unnatural.

I'm tired of the hair deciding to be dark blue or black.

Ah yes, me too.

I wonder why they decided to make a weird mutant color like that.

Several NPCs in the game have flawless black hair, why can't we?

Same here. The "black" mostly comes out as navy blue for me. There are some times where they are a nice black. Not deep black but still black. But these moments are too few in my opinion D:

Try this:

Put your character's face in 3/4 angle (to the side but not entirely in profile), then move the slider just left-right and then just top-bottom to get a better understanding what parameters change with each motion. (this goes for every slide, btw)

I wish there was at least one "save state" option, I think it would help with not replaying the prologue gazillion of times.

The nose for me, though only really on dwarf characters.  They don't have that huge bulbous nose that I really loved in Origins, so trying to replicate it is a bit hard.

Outside of that, it's the ears for the most part, I have to make concessions in order to not have hair clipping through it.

Those moments are usually indoors, in a dark room.

There, even dark red looks black =P

Hopefully this is a "Will be fixed" issue in Patch 3(If it ever gets released).

For me it's the cheekbones.. Maybe cuz I'm on XOne... not sure. The lighting and slight reduction in gfx quality isn't helping. So many parameters to get it right. Depth,  width, height.. then eyes, then surrounding fatty or sunken cheeks. Ugh. There's a sweet spot where everything could click in place like a puzzle, but I can never find it.

I was wondering, isn't the CC much more difficult with a controller? Since I'm mostly a PC player, I'm afraid I have no idea how it works on a console

Not really.. but I have nothing else to reference. At this point, I got used to it. To really fine tune, you just have to be slow and careful, but it's not too bad. My main setback is visual and wondering how it will reflect correctly in game.

Thanks for the explanation! :)

I think your setback is pretty much anyone else! I'm pretty lucky since mine is restricted to colours but I've read that some people (not sure if it's your case as well) are getting really different features in-game than what they made in CC :/

I don't know if it's drastically different.. maybe I just can't get the angle/camera right enough to see what it'll truly look like. You can see my character I just posted ( link). I'm happy enough, but it's a good example at failing at cheekbones (too low? not wide enough.. no clue). It's subtle, but subtlety drives me nuts. I might be OCD. lol

I think the basic idea behind the thread works well for other races as well. It's more a matter of choosing the right starting face. For elves, only a few work correctly. I've made some well-proportioned elves and qunari.

For qunari, the cheekbones can often become too exaggerated. Eyes can also be problematic because all faces start with the eyes WAAAAAY high up!

Spoiler

For elves, the problematic thing is that they can suffer from GIANT forehead.

Giant forehead of Frankenstein's Elven Monster:

Spoiler

I had to go through the faces to see which one was best proportioned; you have to pull the jaw up so you can pull the eyes up so the forehead is more realistic in length (wish I could get Cassandra's forehead length, but I think the hair choices are partially to blame. So many of them pull the hair back--not many have fringe):

Spoiler

It is still a struggle though.

I actually find humans more difficult to work with because I think they all tend to look pretty bland, nothing to separate them from NPCs.  Just my opinions though.  ;)

If I may, I think the ckeebones might be a bit too low as you said. But he's a nice looking Inquisitor!

As for the angle, I often look at the cheekbones fron below and from the sides as many times as possible and most importantly in the eyes tab because you can zoom more in it and so in my case, it helps me see some tiny details I'm not happy with and that I might have missed otherwise. Hope that helps you :)

It might be stupid but I also have difficulties with the make-up. For some weird reasons, the sliders move on their own. For example, I put the eyeliner one on max, then fiddle with the eyeshadow and when I go back to the eyeliner, the slider is in the middle

I think my game is possessed.

You're not the only one! This happens to me so often. I usually end up "setting" the makeup colors/sliders about 10 times before they stick. I don't know if it's lag or something? Ugh.

From below? I don't think I can spin the camera like that on a console.. I think I've tried. That might be part of my problem.

But thanks for the input.. if they ever put the CC in game, I'd be a lot happier. This is a lousy way to do things.

See, I like this. On a guy at least. Dorian can be the lone peacock. :P

Only wish there were more hairsyles.
