Should I have played DA2?

Hey everyone. I'm currently 50-60 hours in Dragon Age Inquisition and I'm loving it. What an incredible amount of detail has been poured into this game. You can tell it was made with love.

Anyway, onto the topic. Should I have played DA2? I started on Origins and finished it (another incredible game), but passed on DA2 because my friends said it wasn't nearly as good. Ratings seemed to indicate so as well.

Should I pause my Inquisition story and go back to play DA2 just to catch up? Or maybe someone can provide a synopsis of what happened in DA2 that transfers into Inquisition?

Thanks!

It is not required to play DA2 as you get jist of it during the beginning of DAI.

But if you are a fan of the Dragon Age games, I think you should play it, just be ready to hear "Another wave" a lot =P

Also, do not play it for the gameplay(Personal feeling, the gameplay is not good and there is a lot of reused areas in the game), play it for the story =)

Also, sarcastic Hawke is awesome =)

It's not required but it's like DAI's prologue, in a way. It's very different, some love it some hate it (I love it). Definitely worth a try, especially given how inexpensive it is these days.

The most relevant part of DA2 is the Legacy DLC. Honestly both DA2 and DAO are very skippable, each DA game is very self contained. DAO is arguably the most self contained given that the majority of the events and choices made in it (aside from the fate of Alistair and the OGB) are completely irrelevant in DAI and DA2.

DA2 isn't really as bad as people say, I mean, it's not good, but it's not terrible. It's an average gaming experience, worth somewhere around ten to fifteen dollars. A decent way to kill a weekend, if you've got a cold or something. A fever would probably enhance the experience to be honest, a bottle of NyQuil certainly would, and it's not a hard game so you don't really need to focus.

Play it once so you can join the DAO hipster club.

DA2 is the anti DAI. No exploration, recycled areas, LOTS of cutscene conversation. It's not as bad as some people say but that doesn't mean you'll like it.

I would say yes.  Honestly, DA 2 is better than DA: I, but that is obviously up for debate.  My DA: I experience is on 360, so...  Story and characters are done much better in DA 2.

In my opinion DA:I is better than DA2 ever has, ever could, or ever will be. With the EXCEPTION that the story, at least imo, is tighter in DA2. Not saying it's better, just saying it's better pulled together than DA:I's main story.

That said.  DA2, I guess if I push personal qualms aside, isn't that bad. It's nowhere near DA:O or DA:I. But if you already like the series, it's probably worth at least one playthrough.

I'd skip it - DA:I is where the main character of DA2 finally gets to be relevant.

DA2 is actually about the story of one of your companions and how you are total impotent at stopping the events this character does.

So - if you want to play a game that shows you what it feels like to be an NPC... yes, play DA2./

I'd say go for it.  You can grab it on the cheap these days (although if you are really looking for the DA:I tie-ins, you'll want the Legacy DLC as well).  I rather enjoyed the combat, characters, and Kirkwall itself (if there is one thing I miss from DA2 to DA:I, its foreboding urban environments, particularly the Kirkwall Gallows). The cave levels become tedious as the game progresses due to recycled environments, but most of this can be skipped if its more than you can stand.

If I we're playing only for DA:I tie-ins, I'd blaze through the main quests, and perhaps a few of Varric and Anders side-quests to get some context on red lyrium and the mage rebellion. If you are looking to get the most from DA2 itself, I'd focus on all the character quests and interactions. To me, for better or worse, this was heart and sole of the game. I can't promise you'll love it, but I know I did, in spite of the internet vitriol.

At this point I would suggest just finishing DAI. BUT I do recommend playing DA2 (and Legacy DLC) at some point. I think it adds flavor to DAI.

I loved DA2. The complains are just unfounded. The only things that were any different were recycled maps, maybe less NPC interaction but honestly I didn't notice that much of a difference.

That's it. The story was great, the gameplay was phenomenal compared to Inquisition. I really loved the battle mechanics.

that's a load of BS. why is varric captured by cassandra then? why does the entire city of kirkwall stop functioning just to recognize you as the champion?

you're the most goddamn important character in the story. if it wasn't for you Anders would have been dragged off by the Templars

He frankly should have been

As for DA2 I say play it. It may have plenty of recycled dungeons in the main game but the characters are alot more fun imo

Hell Hawke alone makes it worth the price of admission. Hes got more personality in his pinky than both the Warden and Inquisitior combined

If you have some time on your hands, DA2 is a pleasant way to fill it.

But do include the DLCs are they are good.

Be prepared to cope with the caves, temples, houses, looking identical, environments are repeatedly reused.

It's not a bad game, it includes very good bits, but it's in the shadow of DAO and DAI.

No.

No need to play DA2 ever. Certainly not to enjoy DA:I

It's like the Star Wars prequels. It never happened.

You don't need to, but if you get the chance to then do.

Even by the partisan standards of the Bioware forums it was a polarising experience - (personally I loved it).

There were reused areas and it had it's faults but I think it was a great, if flawed, attempt at some thing a bit different that almost, but not quite, was brilliant; the story certainly was up to the usual standard and actually if one ignored the reuse, the graphics and character representations certainly were pretty much spot on.

YMMV, as always

Da2 got such a bad rap, especially since everyone only had the one game to compare it to. In terms of world, it is much smaller, since you're only in the one city versus wandering all over Fereldan and the dungeons are painfully identical, but the character development is amazing imo. And Hawke is perhaps the best protagonist to date, including quizzy, especially snarky Hawke. If you love the lore and the characters in DAI and O, it's worth your time

Decided to dust off DA:2 and replay it again. Needed a break from DA:I....

So anyway, I discovered that I think I like DA:2 better. Not taking anything away from Inquisition -- still a good game and all, but DA:2 is the one for me.

Anyway, to OP: it depends what you're into. A lot of people who enjoyed Origins didn't enjoy DA:II, yet some of us liked it better.

My reasons are:

*Fast-paced combat

*Blood and gore splatters

* Great characters/protagonist (though you only get one option)

If I could sum it up; fun. I think this is what Inquisition lacks (aside from the many comedic moments).

da2 has the best story in dargon age games, despite it's narrative problems, the story is fantastic!

I have to agree.

Sarcastic Hawke = GOD.

Makes the story I reckon.

I love how in Origins/Inquisition you can choose from a number of races, make your own character, etc but I think I prefer the one choice... one reason being is whenever I played Origins or Inquisition I'd think to myself, "I can't get into this character" -- delete. Or... "My character's nose is out of joint" -- delete.

At least with Hawke you can a full blown personality and a considerably good looking character.

DA2 - as the story hung in the air - needed DAI to complete it.

Now we have DAI, DA2 also feels less unresolved

And the cycle repeats, Sofa Jockey.

I mean, some people don't even know wtf happened at the end of Inquisition.

DA2 is a nice "prologue" kind of game for DAI .. no need to play it, but if you can get it cheap (and + the LEgacy.DLC, obviously ^^), I would recommend to play it.

After all, its more story in the DA-Universe, and what's not to like about that? NPCs are kinda good, romances not so much afaiak, and the cliffhanger-ending is none if you have played DAI already ... so ...I recommend it.
