The AI controlled companion behavior is really weird in this game. My party keeps using their skills randomly and wasting their cooldowns, for example Varric just fires Leaping Shot even when he's not surrounded and when he eventually gets surrounded, he can't use Leaping shot because he wasted it on an enemy miles away.

Why did they reduce the tactics to only "drink potion when your hp < 20" stuff? I liked to set tactics in previous DA's so I wouldn't have to micromanage every single damn second of the fight and pray that my companions don't do nothing stupid. Is there really no option in this game to set my companions' moves based on the situation?

I hate it and I haven't figured it out either and I've been reading and searching for anything.  Set ranged party members to follow themselves?  Does this work?  Set Warrior Tank to follow Main Character?  There is also something with Stamina reserves and potions.  My guys never have any stamina/mana when I go to control them.  So I can never pull off any of Sera's cool high DPS moves or Solas Rift mage stuff cause they never have any juice.  I just don't get it.

Set everyone to follow themselves .

Defend other or self sucks because unless they are actively attacked the defender will stand around and do nothing.

Follow > other is problematic because certain things aren't attacks so for example if you are a mage and want all your followers to attack your target but your first 3 actions are barrier, static cage and fire mine they will do nothing because you haven't targeted an enemy.

I am a 2HW and usually bring Cassandra and a Archer and Mage.  Cass and I go in to F people up and those 2 don't stay back they run into battle.  Then if i go to use them they have no Stamina/Mana for me to use.  So I get nothing out of them.  I wish somebody had something that works.

The AI diesnt maintain distance well. They desperately need a ranged vs aggressive set of behaviors. I will say that Follow> Self on the ranged helps because they aren't rubber banded to the melee classes.

If you want to reserve mana for you to use you can set that in their behaviors although the I usually set their mana reserves to 0%.
