Yeah it needs critical damage bonus rings ideally (failing that, flanking or twin fangs). The Lantern / FBP recharges health instead of HoK, while the extra damage is better for guaranteed kills via TF, and followed by DB if necessary.

Also fun aggro management tricks via stealth / FBP. Initiating FPB breaks stealth, but the return activation does not.

About the Archer build: I've been trying to get my Archer to 250 so I have a lot of promotions under my belt and would like to offer my opinion on it.

What is "Escape"? Evasion? or Evade? Don't think there is anything called Escape.

Also, what's the point of Flanking Fire? Since Archers are so defenseless and need distance, they spend most of their time at the back of the team and very rarely see the flanks of enemies. And if they did, why would you get that and then not also get Sneak Attack? And even if they did, the Long Shot is their most effective weapon and is really used best when you can line up the enemies, which is almost always from the front as they chase down your teammates.

I would really replace Flanking Fire with Dance of Death, which is an absolutely essential Archer passive if you ask me. When combined with Opportunity Knocks and Long Shot, it basically ensures the Archer can cast Long Shot for as long as he's not dead.

Also, while I understand and appreciate the value of Knockout Bomb, especially with putting the Red Templar Commander to sleep cause that's a pretty awesome bonus to that, I would also recommend a build with Spike Trap. I've come to love it recently.

For one thing, the main weakness to Archers is getting flanked by Stalkers that kill you basically instantly. Since Spike Trap works like a proximity mine, this is protection against those attacks as Sneak doesn't protect them from it. Also, like Knockout Powder, it can serve as a great way to escape from closing in enemies as it can be placed and activated almost instantly for a quick knock-down effect. It also does damage.

In that case I'm not saying Knockout Bomb is bad, because it's not, but Spike Trap is also pretty great.

And a third thing I'd like to ask about... I know investing a point in Fallback Plan sucks because the Archer already wastes a point in Caltrops, but I've found Easy to Miss and Evasion are both extremely helpful for people who mostly play in PUGs. Particularly on Perilous. Particularly in light of the new Wave 5 rules that don't allow the Archer to always establish a more defensible position.

To sum up, my Archer build is very similar to yours... but instead of Flanking Fire, Disable, and Mark of Death, and Knockout Bomb... I use Dance of Death, Spike Trap, Fallback Plan, and Easy to Miss (Fallback Plan isn't active). Could also substitute Rolling Draw for Evasion if feeling particularly Vulnerable. I've never found Rolling Draw to be necessary anymore than Evasion is.

Quick question, I play archers myself, (only got a few promotions so still playing with all the skills/builds), are Caltrops really any use ..?  I tend to find that by the time enemies get face to face they look like a pincushion already..?  Perhaps there is something I am missing with them..

My personal opinion on this (and who really cares about my opinion, but screw it I'm doing it anyway) is that they do have some use, particularly at low levels or in situations where you're getting overrun & out of your league. Not useful enough to keep them forever (Knockout Bomb, Knockout Powder, Spike Trap are all much better options that perform similar functions). But say you're a level 7 on a Perilous run and have several dogs coming after you. You can keep them at bay with Caltrops and Explosive Shot's stagger effect. Just run in circles, drop Caltrops, run some more, drop Explosive... rinse repeat. You look like a crazy person and the level 20 Arcane Warrior will stand there laughing at you, but better to survive than go down.

However, if you didn't start with Caltrops by default there would never be a reason to invest a point in them. Because you already have them, though, they can be used effectively in certain situations.

Thanks for pointing those out. I haven't checked up the archer in a long time, and made some minor updates. I don't always need dance of death, but it is sometimes recommended depending on your gear. I still have FF because very often enemies turn their back to my characters when striking my allies. Very opportune time to attack them. Evade helps with that, and so does FBP.

The builds listed are a reference point with for a known good efficient playstyle. I do make tweaks and test out changes, which is why the post gets updated. I don't get SA because usually the enemy is dead via FF if their back is turned, and it isn't as critical. Feel free to take it though. I usually get crits off Mercy Killing due to my allies Sleep or Panicking the enemy, or my own use of knockout bomb / sleep powder -- which is a good arguement for taking both sleep skills.

As for Stalkers, if you move forward at all, especially while strafing, they literally cannot hit you due to how Twin Fangs (their attack), works. Their AI is such that they're hestitant to attack a target that is moving as well, unless the target is moving directly toward them while they are already committed to attacking.

Shadows however should be targetted with leaping shot. You should still move around, and avoid using auto-attack while Shadows are nearby, so you can maximize mobility and opportunity (no vulnerability periods due to auto-attack), but shadows are easy to deal with overall.

I'll try Spike Trap sometime. I liked it enough before, but I never got to use it that much.

No, they aren't good enough to warrant an ability slot. TheMindKiller is correct. However, the correct response to the dog situation is Leaping shot --> Rolling Draw's magic arrow for the kill with positioning in between. You will killing almost any enemy nearby, or at least knock it down, buying time for additional attacks to finish it off or duck into better positioning.

Long live the Drasca!

By the way I found an item called, "The Helm of Drasca" in the single player game. By design or crazy coincidence?

Thanks for that Mindkiller and Drasca, when I search for Caltrops you get all kind of silly responses..lol, I run with a good bow (Cruel Redemption) and superb HOK Ring and I rarely touch Perilous with a low level..my promotions are just not enough yet and I would just let the team down by being face down most of the time!

Some sound and fun builds in here though, will definetely try some out! :)

Cruel Redemption is an end game bow. You can run Perilous with that. HoK ring takes the cake. You are perilous ready. If you're on PC, feel free to add me.

Cruel Redemption is an amazing bow.  The 1% Heal on hit works with leaping shot, and opportunity knocks trait will allow you to spam leaping shot and long shot, keeping your health up.  I found I didn't really need the HoK ring and opted to use a superb crit damage ring instead along with enhanced long shot ring.  Also modded the grip with more crit damage which made it hit even harder than my griffon.  Absolutely love that bow. :)

Yeah, i built it the same way too. I don't have long shot ring so I use the bow + superb hok + superb critical damage. This way i get life on hits + kill so I can stay alive longer if someone else gets the kill point.

I also use it over griffon for perilous runs and use Griffin for routine/threatening if I'm trying to get a completion after promoting.

Also you can try explosive shot to open with, long shot when they drop and follow with leaping shot if required and if they are still alive, using an upgraded evade should drop them.

range

sleeping powder is close range. Knockout bomb use projectile (so it's very similar in terms of aiming and range to for example hidden blades)

Cheers, tried both and decided I don't really like either..lol, Knockout bomb seems to be a little glitched on mine and cooldown is like 4 minutes (yes I do have full stamina, its still kind of greyed (dark red?) out) plus that some enemies are not even affected.. :(  Maybe I am using it wrong but find that a few extra arrows in the face has a permanent comatose effect..

Has anyone tested if sleep effects have diminishing returns? Or can you take both sleep effects and rotate them on Samson?

You have to stop attacking to use it. For some reason it can't be activated while holding down auto-attack.

I've tested archer build and I'm pretty sure it's the last time I've put point in evade. Evade sucks. I can live with some offhost problems with combat roll but not with this.

It's always broken, pretty much throw archer all over the place.

Also I have huge aggro problem on archer. In theory I'm standing at long range and spam long shot, I can't even see precisely what I'm killing but still some random archer has aggro on me and snipes me from other side of the planet. They weren't even damaged by me, they 3 other guys to shot and all of them are way closer. Sometimes even melee guys charge at me like morons.

Easy to miss helps with that or it's just "only rogue without stealth" problem?

I'm pretty sure the archer smells of bacon.
