DAO is an amazing game. But so is ME1. 2 and 3. I think you'll like it better cause it's more of a continuing story. Many of the same characters appears in all the games. And frankly, (I play on PC with a M&K, by the way), ME3 is way better than DAI.
There were times in all the ME games where I had to hold back tears. And laughter. Not so with DA. Although DAO (the first one) is - can be a killer emotionally. Make sure you get all the DLC's too. Sure, some of them are sort-of-boring, but some are gold (like LofSB, Citadel, Omega),
Like DAO, ME1 is VERY dated. I still think DAO playes (but ME2, and ME3 play WAY better than DA2 and DAI) better, but you'll get the most of out of the series if you play it all. Also, well - you must experience the Mako. Every gamer should.
As in Mako reactor? Will Sephiroth show up?

OP I doubt you'll get many, if any, telling you not to at least try the series. It's incredibly strong with many huge positives. There are a few issues, and one of those is unfortunate in its place in the trilogy, but that can't detract (for me) from the massive amount of enjoyment that I've had out of these games.

I was the opposite of you. I played ME first and was wondering, if I enjoyed ME this much, maybe I'll enjoy DA. Now I have two favorite gaming franchises.
So I encourage you to play Mass Effect.
Pretty much this. I started gaming FPS only. Never interested in RPG. Then ME came along. I took the chance on it. Have to admit I was not used to all the dialogue but quickly got used to it. Absolutely love the ME franchise, and honestly, I would replay them all again.
Because of ME, I decided to try DA:O and once again, it took me a little while to adjust to the playstyle, but I also love the DA franchise too.
For $30... go for it. If you do get into them, the replayability for each game is there. Bang for your buck (if of course, you enjoy the games).
