Why can't you land on Earth?

I realize in ME 1 and 2 that you can only read the description about Earth but can't land on it besides Luna on ME 1.

Why is this? Only time you get to go on earth is when it's at its worst.

My opinion? Earth is boring. Want to visit earth? Step outside. Want to play a game set on earth? Take your pick. Want to explore completely alien worlds out in space and meet aliens? Mass Effect is a good place to start.

Honestly, imo, having the whole "save earth!" agenda crammed down our throats in ME3 was a mistake.

In ME1 you are led to believe that most people probably wouldn't want to go there.

If there was going to be a Systems Alliance hub, it would have probably been on Arcturus.

None of the planets are interesting in and of themselves. The mission makes the location. I mean, what does barren rock #8 have on a habitable planet with a far wider variety of environments, from jungles to deserts and vast oceans?

The fact that you're walking/driving/exploring a completely alien world is plenty interesting to me, even if the driving mechanics were less than ideal. Also, it was just my opinion.

Because there's nothing of interest there for some reason.

On a more practical level, they probably didn't want to deal with the level design.

Thank you god, that was an answer I was looking for.

Because earlier I was just thinking why there isn't some central hub or something, you know like Omega or Illium.

I would not mind stopping by on the blue and green jewel. It is my home... well my Shepard's home, sense I always go with Earthborn. I wonder what a Earthborn would be called? Earthian, Earthion. Anyway, we should at least get a few areas to walk around on the surface. Such as how we have access to a few areas of the Citadel.

Same reason you couldn't land on Mars until ME3. They didn't have an actual level made for it yet.

Most planets are just background story, instead of playable levels that you could land on and explore. Next Mass Effect is rumored to have more planets that you can land on and explore. Hence, the emphasis on exploration in the upcoming game.

If given the choice, I would sacrifice Earth in favour of Thesia or Palaven.

I think you're leaving out the very valid and intriguing idea of visiting an Earth affected and shaped by said space and aliens.

But yes, the 'save earth!' motivation was ill-thought out, especially since there was no real reason presented for such beyond Shepard having angst about people dying there (even if it contradicts a particularly callous, sociopathic, or otherwise apathetic RP.) Then again, large parts of the narrative by ME3 were largely bunk.

Seriously, If earth was to be visitable at all it would be In the first or second game, just as small hub AKA Noveria, with a sidemission or two. Or have it be like the prologue for the very first game. For ME3 earth should have been limited to have few scenes in the ultimate epilogue of the game. The Climax of the series should have taken place in a real alien enviroment, A long time ago I proposed an Assault through the citadel relay on the Reaper stronghold in dark space. I would give the designers some creative freedom for a new environment and perphaps some new enemies.

Why would the Reapers have or need a stronghold in dark space?

I agree with Valmar. If the devs are going to devote time and resources to developing a hub, why make that hub Earth? There is a whole galaxy full of planets to explore, so why choose the one we see every day? If you're going to have a hub be on a human planet I think Lowell City on Mars or Illyria on Elysium would be better candidates. Or whatever the capital city of Terra Nova is.

A big mistake, and I was so flabbergasted at Bioware's decision. I hope for their sakes it was all about marketing for the mainstream and not an honest decision from Casey/Mac that Earth was somehow more important than the other major planets in Mass Effect.

I wish we could roleplay a character that cared more about the galaxy than the fate of Earth.

It would be nice to have a choice.

Why would Terra Nova be humanities capitol? Is it not just a big desert planet in the Asgard system? I there there should be more than one hub. For example: Humanities would be Earth, Asaries would be Thessia... you get it.

It's the capital, homeworld, and place of residence for 99% of humanity. It's important.

Sans the whole 'drop everything and save Earth schtick' in ME3, It also makes sense in the story: Earth is where the Reapers are going to be spending a considerable amount of energy harvesting, since humans are their chosen big Reaper goo resource this time around. The Citadel being used to make a Reaper isn't a terrible stretch of the imagination either.

Without the aforementioned emotional attachment to Earth that Shepard now has, it makes sense as to why the Reapers consider Earth important, and why it's where the endgame of the series takes place.

You misunderstood.

I wasn't saying Terra Nova was the capital of the Systems Alliance. I was saying that I'd rather have the series visit the capital of Terra Nova , or Illyria (the capital of Elysium), or Lowell City (the capital city of Mars) than Earth.

Unlike Mars and Elysium, I don't know the name of the capital of Terra Nova, assuming it is ever mentioned.

Perhaps I was missing the point. The reason I created this thread was because in around 100 - 150 years we'll have amazing metropolis looking cities with amazing sights that we'll (probably) never see in our lifetime. To have a glimpse of Earth in ME 3 was nice but it gave me a bitter feeling since it was then attacked by Reapers.

Again, what I was looking for was a reason Bioware didn't make a small hub for earth to purchase things. It would have been nice to show Garrus, Tali or Liara and say this is my home. Like in ME 2 for example. You can go to Illium or Omega and take two squad mates to bring along with you and have them comment on a few things about that place.

I didn't want anything philosophical like "go outside to experience Earth" or things like that. Just a good comment or an idea like God said earlier like: they didn't want to deal with the level design.

Spacer and Colonist Shepard wouldn't view Earth as 'home'. Though I get the sentiment.

The lack of originality of doing an earth-centric hub, I felt, was a justified response. Sure, seeing what earth might look like in a century or so would be cool - but it's a "been there, done that" sort of issue. I'd personally rather they focus more on the alien worlds and alien cultures than show me earth stuff. Besides, given their track record for hubs it's unlikely it would had been anything spectacular that warrants taking focus from the more original alien worlds.

Somewhat unrelated but am I the only one who was a bit disappointed that it was London that got the blunt of focus? For me that is pretty cliche since more often than not when shits going down on earth its either in New York to show off the liberty statue or its in London to show off Big Ben. How original indeed.

Speaking of London, did you know Anderson was born in London? The more you know.

Too bad it couldn't happen in Toronto with the CN Tower in the background

It would have been very interesting if the Reaper attack was in Dubai. All the different rich locations like the Burj Khalifa or those islands you see would have been a nice twist.
