I was going to let this one fly, but after reading David Gaiders latest Tumblr page regarding to this character has further encourage me address this issue.

http://dgaider.tumbl...-for-krem-hes-a

Bioware if you're going to introduce a true transgender male into the game at least do it responsibility with an educated choice, proper dialogue, and options... especially considering the fact that this is a very sensitive subject to get into at this time while many people from the real world are still struggling to accept transgender people, and would rather prefer to inflict violence against them rather than to tolerate their very own existence.

Krem does not deserve the right to be labeled as a male, nor should be viewed as one in a biological point of view. She is a woman who suffers from gender identify disorder. She is a tomboy on steroids what boils down to.

http://youtu.be/-mpRLIO_5fg?t=1m9s

When you asked her if she had the chance to use magic, would she change all the way, and her answer to that question was quite obvious. She clearly indicated with an exact quote end quote "What? No. I don’t want any magic like that within ten yards of my body." For someone who wants to live the rest her life as a man, and want others to use the proper pronouns wouldn't indulge in such an opportunity to fulfill her life long dream of transition into a man by using magic if it was offer to her? That doesn't sound like transgender male to me.

In the real world true Transgender males makes sacrifices to reach their ultimate goals of transiting, largely due to finance, since it's not cheap to have sex reassignment surgery (Top and bottom) or paying for their hormone replacement therapy. Many health insurances do not cover this kind of treatment, as far as I am aware of. Some trans men become desperate because they do not have significant amount of funds to pay for these treatments, and surgeries, and uses the internet to collect funds for their transition. They're truly that dedicated in reaching their full expectation. Engaging in psychotherapy and seeking a psychiatrist isn't cheap either. Before anyone could achieve this ultimate goal must follow the guidelines of the Harry Benjamin's Standards of Care ( http://www.tc.umn.ed...hbigda/soc9.pdf )otherwise a doctor/surgeon would not follow through. It is a pain in the ass to do this, but some are willing to go through it to follow their destiny.

Cremisius Aclassi, as an assigned transgender male, is one of the worst written characters in the game. Considering the fact that shes not doing anything to make the final step of transiting into a man.

Bioware I have a question and a suggestion for you. If you want your audience (Us - the consumers of your product) to take this charterer seriously then why wasn't this part of Bulls personal quest? I thought it would of been great for Bull to walk over to you, and ask for a personal favor to find a
either an alchemist or a mage who masters the surgical technique of healing (Or both) that can help Krems ultimate dream of becoming a man. Of course Bull would start talking to you about how Krem mention a while ago that she was searching for someone to help with her transition, but never got a round to it because she was being persued by the authorities once they found out who she truly was.  Either you agree to do Bulls favor (which will give you a significant amount of approval points) or refuse and thus giving you significant amount of disapproval. The result from agreeing to Bulls personal quest is Krem producing a full beard, more masculine, and no longer have a female voice but rather have a deep male voice. He would engage you in a dialogue to personally thank you for giving him a new chance of life.

You did something quite similar with the situation with Cole... you can make him either more human like or him being more spirit. If you make him more human like he reacts happily when Sera called Cole a "He" and got all hysterical over the idea that someone called him a he.

Well this is at least new.

Discussion about true and not-so-true transgenders in a videogame that has so many flaws, anyone?

I think there's a bit of difference between surgery in which you know all the steps and have examples of it being done correctly and magic which is distrusted in Thedas with the added bonus of Crem being from Tevinter, which likely means he has seen it used to its worse.

Why would Crem need a beard or a baritone voice to qualify as a man? Some men don't have that and don't want that. Some women have that and they don't see themselves as men or want to be one.

Krem lives in a world without hormone treatments, without gender re-assignment surgery (none that i'd trust at least, i'm sure the 'surgeon' at skyhold would like to try) and where transgender folk have absolutely no chance of physically becoming a man.

But that's ok because Krem is accepted as a man and lives as a man. In Thedas, this is the best one can expect.

The kind of magic needed to change sex would probably be blood magic, or a temporary glamour type illusion. I don't blame Krem for his reaction.

Ignoring everything else, it wasn't part of The Iron Bull's personal quest because it doesn't affect The Iron Bull. Every personal quest evolves that person involved. Meanwhile the quest you want is more a Krem personal quest. The personal quest for The Iron Bull we have is a much better personal quest for The Iron Bull because he has to choose which is more important: the Qun or the Chargers.

I might add from myself that we should not be forced by the game to call her 'he' during dialogue with Iron Bull, leave it to RP. There is no need for forceful and intrusive agenda.

Yes because biologically speaking they're still the same gender as they were born to be. Remember sex ed class that our teachers taught us in school?

According to Patrick Weekes' recent interview with Nerd Appropriate, Krem lives in a world without transitional procedures. The magic he is referring to is risky, unproven, and morally grey. I think Krem acted appropriately for a person living in Thedas. I think he is a great character that appears to resonate with a lot of people.

Mr. Weekes cared a great deal that the character was meaningful and positive. You could offer your insights and suggestions without insulting the writer and his work. Just a thought.

I am not particularly well-up on the parlance, but I'm pretty sure that in the transgender community there is a distinction between sex and gender. Gender being a product of brain chemistry, independent of whatever sexual organs you may or may not have.

My teachers taught me that you are who you feel you are. If you act like the person you feel you are.

So if you act like christians do, including morals - you're christian. Maybe even more christian than the ones that attend the church each Sunday.

If you act like a man - hardy, honest, masculine, fair-minded - you are a man. ****** just doesn't count.

And she'd probably use a fork and knife and lets not discuss the sutures -some surgeon!  And science, well the mages have her on that one whether she gets it or not -at least they have libraries.

So here are some points

  • Not all trans people want surgery, most trans people would argue that the genitals don't make the gender.
  • Krem lives in a world were the most advanced surgery is amputation. The only magic that might be able to help him transition to a male body, if he wanted that would be Blood Magic and even then this is something that seems beyond the realm of Blood Magic. Basically it is probably impossible to change a persons body in DA lore, even Morrigan says that shape-shifting wouldn't mean she could take the form of another human.

Krem is a great character, he has a sense of humour and is open about his experiences as a trans male. He is the best trans character that BioWare has written and probably the best depiction of a trans character in video games in general.

To say that he is not a 'true' transsexual because he wouldn't want to go through gender reassignment surgery/magic is not only ridiculous  because  of DA lore but also insults any real trans people that don't want surgery or who only want top surgery.
