Cassandra's writting is a prime example of why i think companions are more important than PC in representation. While in games like DA where the protagonist we make always changes on different playthroughs companions remain more or less constant.

Now if only they could do something about her braid....

Also i know people don't like Asian games due to oversexualisation , but seriously some of the main female characters have amazing stories and characters. Its just that the Japanese have a very different view on sex than the western world

Short version:

Because for the first time in a video game, I got the impression of a real developing (non-romantic) relationship between my character and an NPC.

Long version:

My main Inquisitor is an unbeliever. And a mage. She didn't hide what she thought of this "Herald of Andraste" thing, she told Cassandra she didn't believe in the Maker. Still, in the end I'm finding Cassandra is the type of person my Inquisitor could sit down with and talk about things, both the pig picture and personal stuff. They know where they stand, where they're in accord and where they aren't, and they've gone through the fire together, and thus they've come to trust each other. How did that come to be?

Sure, at the start I made some decisions and said some things Cassandra didn't like, and for a time she was noticeably cross in conversations. Then her quest came up, and in the aftermath, I found that she was an eminently reasonable and intelligent woman behind all that impulsiveness, that she cares about history ("The world needs the truth this time, no more legends lost to the ages") and struggles with her faith instead of depending on it for easy answers. I respect that. Not only did the game successfully convey that complexity, it also gave me options for mature replies: I didn't want to hide our differences but also didn't want to harp on about them. I could question her attachment to the Chantry once in order to find out where she stands, and then the matter was settled and I didn't need to bring it up again. I also found myself convinced by some of her arguments - and isn't *that* a novelty in a video game, where reasoning is usually so simplistic that I can't agree to anything said? So...I helped her with some other stuff and ended up supporting her as the Divine, all that without ever needing to compromise my own stance. We became friends aware of our differences - but we cared about many of the same things. The truth of faith can't be known, but we are alike in our dedication to truth in the things that can be known. We are both dedicated to change but aware that it needs to come at its own pace. In the end, that we believed different things and would enact somewhat different policies wasn't all that important.

The fact that the in-game conversations actually supported this comparably complex development (which is not so easy to write for an interactive medium) explicitly at various points in the story, that's what impresses me most. Many of DAI's characters feel surprisingly real, but with Cassandra there was a dynamic to the relationship I haven't found in any other game - or NPC - yet,

My sediments exactly. I was so surprised my Cas said she considered me a friend. I had genuine feels man. It first time ever for a non romance plot in a bioware game that I went "Wow, I actually care what happens to her in the end".

It's interesting that a large of the conversations that establish the character of the Inquisitor are with Cassandra.

I have to say, it's awesome to finally see a thread that isn't negative or trolling where everyone agrees. Gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.

Where do you think the quote in my sig comes from?  ;)

With high approval, Cassandra says -- after her fight with Varric -- that the Herald is everything she could have hoped for. I just wish I could have told her the feeling is mutual. Cassandra is a truly exceptional character. Sadly, she also doubles as a reminder that you will never find people like her in the real world.  :(

She didn't say that to me, but that was expected. I found the non-confrontational way my Inquisitor said "You know I don't want the same things as you" as perfect as Cassandra's response - she laughed and said she wouldn't expect anything else from an unbeliever, and the conversation went on on friendly terms. It came across as both of us being astonished that a friendship had developed in spite of everything. It felt....real.

I think that's one reason why she comes across as so real. She remembers what the Inquisitor said in other conversations about their faith, how they viewed being regarded as the Herald of Andraste etc.. I don't think any other companion references what you said in earlier conversations.

I think Cassandra is a well written character as well. Great in combat too. It struck me, though, that she explained the difference between templars and seekers and yet she has the templar specialization. Other than that, she's my favorite character in the game.

yep, OP. Adore Cass. Feels very much like a Bff to my female Inquisitor. I just rolled a male Quizzy to romance her....squee.

**i'm actually really, really enjoying my male Quizzy PT so far. this is a first for me in a BW game.

Yeah it was pretty nice to get that line from her after her little spat with Varric. I expected to be middle of the road in terms of her approval, but was pleasantly surprised. Her interception of the Inquisitor on the way to her quarters was also amusing, though it's pretty great when you're a male character, because she comes back to take back her rebuffing of affection.

Went in expecting to hate her. Left with a new favourite woman in the DA world <3

I kept thinking my Lavellan would irritate the hell out of her with his constant jokes and heathen beliefs. But no, he made her crack a smile on several occasions and she didn't seem to be all that bothered about the faith part. I love some of the comments she made about him, like 'The inquisitor was hilarious' and one about how my Inquisitor was really odd when he flirted with her. I enjoyed watching their relationship evolve until we reached a point where she threw a joke back at my sarcastic inquisitor response. That was a proud moment. Wish I could have high fived her. Lavellan did actually look proud.

I felt all warm and fuzzy when she told him that she considers him a close friend. The divine having a Dalish BFF. Oh the scandal.

Ha.

But her and Dorian really stand out for me as characters who get to know you as an individual and not as either the Herald or Inquisitor. I love the companions in this game but there are times where I feel like many of them just see your inquisitor as a figurehead and believe in your 'Maker Given abilities' rather than you as a person. I don't get that with Cass (or Dorian). I feel like they actually care about you as a person and not you as the Inquisitor.

I think what I'm trying to say here is, Cass is to my Quizzy in DAI what Varric was to my Hawke in DA2. Bros 4 lyf and all that jazz.

Cassandra is an amazing character, certainly one of my favorites but I feel it's unfair to compare her writting to others when she has double the content.

One of the best lines of the game is Cassandra pointing out why the Chantry needs to reform.

"Varric is Andrastian, but he would never even think about stepping into a Chantry. How could we have gotten here?"

I was like: Yeah, that is pretty effed, Cass.

Honestly i always liked the writing for Cassandra. Honestly the anime she was the lead in really brought her out and I liked how in DAI did reference a-lot of what happened in the anime. As she said from DAI on how she was in the anime she was rash and took training to not have any emotion. This was true in the anime because she was just a tough as nails warrior girl who thought of nothing but the mission but the apostate mage really brought her emotions back even though he died. She did kiss him though but after her pic victory she kind of realized she like Liliana grew up a bit. I feel since Dragon Age 2 and Dragon Age Inquisition she is still trying to regain her emotions and realizes that she is very confused about how she feels personally. If you romance her she still feels really confused on how she feels but she at least feels that she won't make the same mistake again by losing a loved one since she lost her loved one before who died honorably.

Honestly I always liked the writing for alot of the Dragon Age characters and I feel Cassandra is one of the well written characters.

Yeah, I even liked the anime too. She was one of the characters I was waiting for.. and expected it to be good. Unlike some here though, I struggle with her "struggle with faith". It's hard to see. But I have plenty of that on my own too. Perhaps everyone struggles in this game.

OTOH, this angle has one of the better lines (in romance). If you tell her she guides you... "Excellent. The blind leading the blind."

Agreed.  I think she is the best Female Character I have ever seen in a video game.  And sometimes I struggle to think of one I have enjoyed in any other medium.  One or two kind of pop out at me...but whatever.  And usually when I play these games or any other form of media when I am attracted to a character...physically.  I usually end up liking other characters more then them.  But, especially in the BioWare context, this is the first character that I have wanted to romance and ended up being my favorite character in the game.

And maybe that is for selfish reasons.  After all she and I, personally, more so then my Inquisitor even, share many of the same opinions on Faith, order, law, chaos, and doing what is 'right' both within the universe of Dragon Age and the more meta context.  But, I still genuinely enjoyed the character and felt like she grew from DA 2 and within that game...and that laugh.

Given the events of the game I think a big struggle of faith is appropriate.  Actually I think that might have been a bit of a missed boat because they could have played it up a bit more since Corypheus wanted to be a new God and all.  It could have been more of a difference between various faiths and the conflict there of...but alas.

Alright, you all have convinced me to move up my Cassandra romance run to the next one which I am about to start.    One question though, is there any differences between the races for Cassandra in order to see all the scenes?

I've heard that you can't dance with Cass as Qunari in Halamshiral, for instance?    Is there any race that gets along better than another with Cass?

It was definitely interesting to read what people liked about Cassandra (as she's my least favorite companion). At the very least I will try to approach her with a little different perspective in my future runs...

::shrugs:: since no one's answered the question, I romanced her as a male elf, and there was no problems. Got the dance too. And no problems (obviously) with a human Trevelyan. Haven't rolled as a Cadash or Adaar with Cassandra romance tho.
