Hey, since I love to read opinions, I'm starting this thread.

The question is simple: Which of the ME games was your favourite, and why was it your favourite? What made it better than the others, to you? Was it any parts of the game you felt wasn't as good, despite it being your favourite?

My favourite game: ME1

Reason:

It was the game that introduced me to the ME series, and unlike the other two, I really felt involved in the story and plot. I loved the characters, and my squad was perfect.

The choices could be difficult to make sometimes (VS choice in particular), the dialogue was superb, and for a first playthrough it was really gripping.

I cannot say ME2 or ME3 gave me the same feeling, even though there was things those two games did better than ME1.

In addition, I love the Mako, and I really liked exploring planets.

The side quests felt well done, and to me, it seemed everything I did contributed to the greater whole.

Despite liking ME1 a lot, I didn't think the game was perfect.

The inventory could be annoying at times, and ME1 didn't really resolve the plots it introduced. And there was very little in the way of consequences for your choices in ME1. In retrospect, I'd call that a mistake. If Bioware truly intended for there to be proper consequences for your choices, they should have begun already in ME1. That's my opinion.

Instead, it left all the plots it introduced for ME2 and ME3 to deal with. In ME2, new plots got introduced, and many of the old ones wasn't resolved, so therefore, ME3 had to attempt to resolve all these in one game.

Anyway, I still like ME1, and it's still my favourite of the series, but I can see that it wasn't perfect.

Now, i'd like to hear your opinions.

In terms of "story" I think ME1 was easily the best of the series.  In terms of a favorite ME game I go back & forth a lot.  Right now I think ME2 was my favorite because of a lot of likeable characters, the Tali LI, and the improved combat mechanics.

I'll give the story & rpg awards to ME1 but I had SO MUCH of a better time in ME2 with the combat mechanics that it nudges out ME1 for now.  If you ask me tomorrow I may change my mind :)

@OP:  I would contend that "best" and "favorite" are totally different things.  I think ME1 was the best of the series [easily] however my favorite was ME2.

Mass Effect 2 is my favorite. It's just a lot of fun and I love the cast of characters. It's an enjoyable experience the whole way through, unlike ME3 which to me was considerably more bleak and depressing from the get-go.

ME3 had the best combat and modding system though and while I do prefer its gameplay the story and setting made it less fun to play so it's not my favorite. Honestly, due to the story and setting, I'd say its my least favorite.

I don't like to choose because I like to view all three games as one big Journey but if I had to definitely

ME2

its more self contained its not really about the galaxy but more about Shepard and his/her crew

For story I'd say ME1, for actual gameplay it would have to be ME2. ME1 there were powers and abilities that were quite interesting and fun to use, but ME2 took it to a whole new level. The Vanguard charge is just too much fun.

The story ended at Mass Effect 1 when Shep got buried in the rubble..  Everything after that is almost fan fiction it's so bad.

Having said that...

If you had to take all 3 games as individual games then my fave list is..

1st Mass Effect 2

2nd Mass Effect

3rd Mass Effect 3.

Now release them in HD Bioware goddammmmit!!!

In ME1 I just edit the ini file to increase the resolution to 1920x1080. Seems to work fine. Not sure if that's what you mean though.

Or better yet install the graphics mod that makes the whole damn game look simply incredible.

Every game had at least a few points over the other two, but ME2 for me. The best balanced, great characters, strong DLC, and the suicide mission.

I love the first Mass Effect the most, but I do wish it had updated combat/gameplay mechanics.

I'm going to have to go with ME3, without a doubt. I know there's a lot of fan discontent with it, but it's easily my favorite of the trilogy.

ME1's gameplay is too awful for me to enjoy it anymore, and since I've got a good ten playthroughs of that game under my belt, I think I'll just let it retire. I recently downloaded the trilogy for my PC after giving my 360 to my sister so that she could experience Mass Effect, and I just couldn't bring myself to finish another ME1 playthrough. The painful combat, the (relatively speaking) boring cutscenes, and the now-dated graphics just don't do it for me anymore. Thank God for downloadable ME1 saves.

My time with ME2 was better, but playing it again reminded me of all the things that bothered me about it - namely, the entire main storyline. I've always felt like the Collectors just came out of left field for no good reason, and while I can't come up with any better way to integrate them into the overarching story of the trilogy, they just never really sit well with me. It's unfortunate, because everything else about ME2's story (i.e. all of the squadmates' personal arcs, which I consider to be the true main story for ME2) was amazing. But the Collectors just feel slapped-on and out of place, and at the end of ME2 I didn't really feel like I accomplished a whole bunch in the greater battle against the Reapers. Don't get me wrong - I still liked it overall, it just feels like more of a side mission to me than a main game. Almost like DLC. In fact, the Omega DLC felt like it would have been a better story for a feature-length game - to me, at least. Unpopular viewpoint, I know, but that's just my feeling on it. Oh, also - the PC controls for ME2 SUCK. Who in the hell played that game on PC and went, "Yeah, you know what? I think we can release that. That feels good."

And then there's ME3, which I'm sure will remain my all-time favorite game for a long, long while. Combat is excellent - easily the best TPS this side of Gears of War 3 - and I really do feel like the RPG elements have finally been perfected. I liked that talent points were basically streamlined from ME1 (no more Charm or Intimidate, but instead you put points in reputation increase which also increases your combat stats) while not retaining the frankly mind-boggling simplicity of ME2. I liked that each talent tree could evolve multiple times, I liked that you didn't have to spend talent points to upgrade your weapons, and I liked the wide range of armors to choose from. Powers finally felt weighty to me, and I don't think I've ever had as much fun in another game as I do when playing as an Adept, throwing powers around like a biotic ninja. The sheer number of options that you have for weaponry was very nice as well; I didn't use all of them, of course, but having the options was nice and experimentation is always fun. As far as the story goes - I loved it. Again, big point of contention with the fans, but I thought that ME3's overall story was the best. Often too simple, true, and not without its own pitfalls, but it felt more original than ME1 and definitely more in line with the series than ME2. Like most people, I didn't enjoy the original endings, but I feel like they fixed almost everything I had a problem with in the EC. (Side note - I still don't like the explanation for why EDI and the Geth have to die in Destroy. Why not just say "all synthetic life based on Reaper code" instead of just "all synthetic life?" It would have made a lot more sense - at least, it would have to me.) I thoroughly enjoyed all of the DLCs, I loved the tying-up of loose ends with respect to your squadmates and the galaxy at large, and I personally feel like the Reapers focusing the majority of their forces on Earth was explained adequately. I'll probably continue to play ME3 for as long as I can, because I just love it that much.

While I agree with the sentiment and also felt like their mandatory death in destroy was unnecessary, even the situation you propose does not necessarily exclude them. EDI and the Geth /are/ based off reaper code. EDI, we learn, was made at least partially with remains from Sovereign. The Geth story arc made a point of demonstrating that now all geth have reaper upgrades, reaper code. So even if the crucible was to target everything BASED on reaper code they would still be targeted.

Mass Effect 2.

Reason:

I actually prefer Mass Effect to be more actiony than RPG when it comes to the gameplay-things, as long as interactive storytelling and player agency towards dialogue and choices is kept. I would've largely been okay with ME3 if it had been completely linear for example but as long as the dialogue wheel had been as good as in 2 and the writing had been better.

I just think ME2 was a balanced combination of all the things that made Mass Effect so likeable. ME1 had a pretty great plot but its cliches were underscored with thick strokes and honestly I thought the story despite all it does do right was a bit boring, that is, until you meet Saren and Sovereign on Virmire and Vigil on Ilos.

Mass Effect 2 really built upon the lore in good ways I thought and it nails the atmosphere that Mass Effect should strive to have the most out of the three games, except for ME1 when it comes to the planetary side-content exploration. It was kind of like a really high-budget TV show with every episode having some sort of unique story and climactic action scene and it wasn't done in a complete low-denominator kind of way.

It triumphed over ME3 as well by enforcing player agency with some proper variation to playstyles with its renegade and paragon dialogues being very unique to one another and it also isn't completely over-the-top in scale like Mass Effect 3 was and it didn't have too much melodrama either. It had its fair share of contrivances and asspulls but unlike ME3 I thought ME2 came into its own, whereas in ME3 I'd have this weird nagging feeling throughout the whole game that something wasn't really right about it because of the autodialogue and dumbed down intelligence in writing.

Mass Effect 1: There's a sense of exploration in Mass Effect 1 that isn't quite there in the sequels. ME1 also did a great job at introducing this wonderful universe, it truly felt like a huge living universe populated by various races and cultures. ME2 and ME3 didn't really re-capture that magic, imo. And I didn't feel as invested in Mass Effect 2's story (which was essentially solving your crew's personal problems because the main story about the Collectors was basically non-existent) as I did Mass Effect 1's. ME3 had some great moments, but it's really from Thessia and onwards that the story begins to fall apart. The character interaction on the other hand was something that steadily improved as the series progressed.

Mass Effect 3.

It had the most depressing, touching, funny and inspiring moments in all my gaming history. Gameplay is the best in the series IMO, although I do miss the challenge of having to deal with different protection layers in ME2. Power combos make different skills work together much better than in any of the previous games. I have played ME3 the most and still get the "feels" at some moments!
