Mass Effect 1: There's a sense of exploration in Mass Effect 1 that isn't quite there in the sequels. ME1 also did a great job at introducing this wonderful universe, it truly felt like a huge living universe populated by various races and cultures. ME2 and ME3 didn't really re-capture that magic, imo. And I didn't feel as invested in Mass Effect 2's story (which was essentially solving your crew's personal problems because the main story about the Collectors was basically non-existent) as I did Mass Effect 1's. ME3 had some great moments, but it's really from Thessia and onwards that the story begins to fall apart. The character interaction on the other hand was something that steadily improved as the series progressed.

I agree with the idea that the galaxy feels larger in ME1, and I overall liked the uncharted worlds.  But I think ME2 actually was a bit better at showing off the peoples of the galaxy since you add Omega and Illium, as well as exposition by some of the crew members.

As far as solving problems for your crew, all of the loyalty missions are technically optional, as are post Horizon recruitment missions, as long as you get to the magic crew number (easier with DLC of course).  I think ME1 seems more like it is focused on the mainline missions only because the optional side missions are nearly completely irrelevant to the main quest and crew, with a couple of exceptions.  Also the main missions were longer in length, but this had a lot to do with packing in long Mako sequences that didn't really add much to the narrative, IMO.

I'll say it. I like ME3 the most. ME3 > ME1 >ME2.

I'm a sucker for big cinematic moments and fan service. ME3 gave those in full.

While I agree with the sentiment and also felt like their mandatory death in destroy was unnecessary, even the situation you propose does not necessarily exclude them. EDI and the Geth /are/ based off reaper code. EDI, we learn, was made at least partially with remains from Sovereign. The Geth story arc made a point of demonstrating that now all geth have reaper upgrades, reaper code. So even if the crucible was to target everything BASED on reaper code they would still be targeted.

You misunderstand - that's exactly what I meant. I don't like that they died, but I accepted it. What I meant was that I would have had an easier time of understanding why they had to die if it had been explicitly stated that only Reaper code-based lifeforms had to die. As it stands, I just don't get why all synthetic life has to die. In a universe where nearly everything is explained and justified almost ad nauseam, EDI and the Geth dying simply didn't make sense to me. So if they changed it to Reaper code-based organisms dying, then bam - suddenly it makes sense. So I apologize that I didn't make that clear.
