The title basically says it. In real life, which companions in DA:I, DA2 and DA:O would you actually be friends and hang out with, who would be acquaintances, and who you would actively avoid etc. List as many people as you like with as much detail as you like.

 

For me I would definitely be friends with:

 

- Alistair (A true gentleman, kind, sweet and funny. Possibly my favourite character in DA)

- Cullen (Like Alistair but not quite as funny I feel like I'd want to help him deal with his horrible past)

- Cassandra (I guess I like the steadfast warrior exterior/romantic interior cliché. Someone you can talk to about issues from personal to world-scale)

- Varric (A great person to talk to and keep you level-headed, though I may feel slightly intimidated)

- Dorian (I admire his courage at a personal level and his attempts to show that not everyone in Tevinter is the same)

- Morrigan (I would try to be friends, though she may not want to)

- Aveline (She's another Knight in Shining Armour like Alistair and Cullen, arguably Cassandra. Perhaps less interesting than them, but a good person)

- Cole (He is literally a personification of compassion, so I think we would get along fantastically. Also unintentionally funny)

- Fenris (Like Cullen, I would keep trying to help with his past even though he might try to be alone at first. He's a good person, except - somewhat understandably - to mages)

- Anders (Pre-Chantry-blast I agreed with him about almost everything he said, and he was funny)

- Dog (Even though I prefer cats )

 

Acquaintances

 

- Solas (I can really relate to him on some things, but he seems oddly inconsistent and hard to understand. Not sure)

- Blackwall

- Wynne

- Josephine

- The Iron Bull

- Oghren

- Shale

- Zevran (This is a great example of how people may act differently towards these characters ingame than in real life. For me, if I wasn't playing a game, I would almost surely have killed him, after all, he had just tried to kill me! But after that part, I liked him fine. Not my favourite character, but witty)

 

Definite rivals

 

- Sera (Ridiculously immature, not relateable at all, has questionable morals, has no character development, and is generally annoying to no end)

- Leliana (Please don't hate me! I don't think she's as nice as she wants you to think. She makes that clear in DA:I)

- Vivienne (Uptight, the definition of fake, has no character development, and not what I would call a good person at all)

- Merrill (So stupid/naive that it's borderline unrealistic. Also, extremely dangerous to herself and others. I'd keep my distance)

- Isabella (Not relateable at all for me, seems incredibly selfish, disloyal and uninteresting to me)

- Velanna (This is another good example of emphasizing the in real life part of this topic, because ingame I'd take her to have all companions, sure. But if it was real life, I would either have to fight her or send her to the authorities. She is essentially a mass murderer/terrorist)

 

What are your thoughts?

From DA:I I'd likely be friends with Varric, Josephine, Blackwall, and Cassandra. Characters that I love in game but most likely wouldn't be friends with in real life would be Vivienne, Cole, and Iron Bull.

I would totally be friends with Iron Bull and Sera, even if I don't like Sera in the game.

Cole would be the person that I always "force" to come out with us.

I would tease Cassandra about how she is too serious, but would always count on her for advice.

Since I tend to "like" rude people, Vivienne would be a friend, but wouldn't always hang out with her.

Varric and I would probably be very close, since I love to write also.

Well, you should expect a long list or wall of text in this kind of thread. Which reminds me of a thread like "What is your canon world state" that has a very long list of every decisions you made, even the minor one.

That's pretty close to my list. Nice explanations by the way. Somehow I forgot to mention Dorian was funny and charming, ha. Anyway, since you put Hawke on the list (which actually makes sense considering we're meant not to see it from their perspective), I'll add the PCs.

- My Warden (More mixed personality, but my favourite protagonist in DA)

For me she just... wasn't as interesting as the others. Lacked personality in my opinion. She wasn't as funny as Hawke, not as heroic as the Warden, had no interesting backstory or family who appear ingame, etc. I like the inquisitor... but something felt lacking to me. I'm curious to know what others thought.

Companions I could see realistically having as friends are: Alistair, Varric, Cassandra, Bull, Josie, Dorian

 

And that's leaving out so many of my favorite people whom my PC's can handle but irl there's probably no way.

Would they be killing people on as regular a basis as they do in the games? If so, I can't really see myself being friends with any of them.  I mean, I think Zev would be a blast to hang out with, but he's...kind of an assassin for hire. Perhaps Aveline and Varric. They seem like the two I can best picture having "normal" lives. Aveline is basically a cop and seems like the type to be up for grabbing a drink with you after work. Varric's your slightly-shady friend that you still hang out with because he's tons of fun.

I'd probably be treated like Carver by Varric, he'd most likely tell me to lighten up and play some wicked grace.

 

I guess the only Inquisition ones I'd be friends with would be(ones who wouldn't be put off by me) Blackwall, Iron Bull(we'd probably flirt and horse around), and Cole, who would totally be there for me whenever I have a sob story

I guess for this experiment they would be exactly how they are in the games, so killing people. But to me it's not about that, it's about mindset. That's why none of the assassin-type people are in my friends category, and quite a few are rivals. Their mindsets are incompatible with mine, and yours, it would seem. As for most of the others, the killing done is generally justified (self-defense etc), especially if you play a "good-guy" PC. That's my opinion anyway.

I'd be real-life friends with Vivienne, even though she used me in-game. But I'm benefitng from that friendship too.

 

Because she is not on drugs, doesn't rob people, doesn't argue with her father, doesn't tell ecstacy elven stories, doesn't drink nor smoke, doesn't read poems and most important.

 

She doesn't lie and she tells you how naked a picture is from head to toe.

 

 

All I want in a friend...   The only part is when they tell me what to do, that's different from advicing me of what's correct.

She will be my best friend.

 

The rest no no..   Cassandra = angry mob, Sera = thug, Blackwall = liar thug,  Dorian = mind-blower, sadistic.

 

Bethany will be my sister in real-life too.

• Alistair. We both love cheese, we make jokes at the wrong times, we're both trying our best to be sarcastic and original, we both hate responsibility, both of us can't cook, both of us act like kids oftentimes, we both have numerous rivals we probably didn't intend to make.... oh man I'll probably go on and on if I continue. I don't know, Alistair is like a male version of me chucked in a fantasy world without a manual and just decided to go do whatever. 
   
• Varric would also be an option cause we'd probably end up telling stories to each other and we'll just guess which one of them is actually true. Although I don't think I'd want to get shitfaced with him, no, but I'm certain we won't run out of stories to tell to each other and we're just gonna end up playing games and making up stories about our companions.
   
• Solas too! He's polite and formal and he's like a fountain of information. He'd appreciate my detailed and ten-minute long rambling and just smile and follow my talking up instead of complain on how terribly talkative I am. He probably won't like my tea habits and my sleep schedule, though, because I'm the type to drink one pot in a sitting while reading and writing stuff under candlelight in the middle of the night.

Kind-of-close-maybe-but-not-enough people:

• Josephine. As much as I'd surely enjoy her stories and as much as she'd surely like what little formality and wit I have in me, I'm like her little sister. I'm a lazy artist who can't sit down to finish a painting and my inspiration is going places and I'd just go and stick my nose where it doesn't belong. Oh gosh.
   
• Cassandra, mainly because we're both romantics at heart, and I could probably talk with her for hours about cheesy lovey-dovey stuff. But my sense of responsibility is erratic and I am terribly indecisive and she could beat me to a pulp in a heartbeat and that won't be great. But really, she could step all over me and I'd thank her, tbh.
   
• Zevran and Isabela. The three of us are all-out in bragging rights oftentimes with almost nothing to back it, and we'd probably share and laugh about those things with our strange sense of humor. Meanwhile, I do appreciate sex jokes and I find them funny, but not once every five minutes, and probably they'd be like my art college friends who starts talking about kinks in public while I just go ????? what

 

Rivals, though..

• Vivienne. Not only am I a rebel at heart, but also my fashion sense would send her face-palming back to Orlais. Though she'd probably respect those things and just sass me until she finds me pleasing. I'd actually love that. 
   
• Morrigan -- as much as I love her, she kind of conflicts with my ideals a bit. I've a soft heart and I think that everyone should be babied and tended to and I am not a 'survival to the fittest' person that she'd just shower disapproval points to me until I drown in black hearts with -10s on them. I don't know, maybe a different case in Inquisition, but...
   
• Dog? Mabari choose their masters. I never thought myself worthy of a smart, loyal dog, mainly because I suck at taking care of pets (even though I could spend all day petting cats and cooing dogs like babies). I'd pet him and he'd bite me a new hole.
