OK so this is a quick question about the board game you can play with Cullen after he beats Dorian in the garden. In many parts of the game, there are randomized bits of dialogue that can change with each replay/reload, like Varric's lie about Bianca, Sera's pet name, etc., but is there a chance of actually losing the game if you decide to play fair?

No, he lets you win (implied), he only wins if you let him win.
I never got the randomized dialogue, when it pop ups? or do you mean when you randomly walk up to him and ask how things are?

I tried all options with this, I think, and the Inquisitor will always win unless you choose to let Cullen win.

How is it implied he lets you win? I admit I was too busy giggling half the time to really pay attention.

By randomized lines, I mean that some companions have alternate lines of dialogue for conversations that you can only trigger by chance. For example, when Sera calls you Inky, and you object, she'll come up with a different one, but it can alternate between tadwinks, shiny, buckles and teetness, and subsequent dialogue if you object again can alternate between the remainder, and Varric has numerous lies about how he acquired Bianca but you'll only get one in each playthrough or possibly reload.
I was just wondering if playing fair gave you the possibility of losing, but I guess that isn't the case.

In two ways, first look at his reactions:
If you cheat he laughs in a friendly way and says that Dorian cheats all the time, so he sort of views you like Dorian at that moment (i get the impression they are pretty close those two) and is all "pff, you silly, you can not cheat in this game with me"
If you let him win, he has this expression "i know what you did there" and a little fox grin.
If you play fair you win and he is all "You've won, let us play again another time", but I don't really get the impression that he says that because he is impressed with your genius, the intonation is not there, it's more like "see? this if fun! let's do it again! maybe?".
The second thing is that from his conversation you can summarize that he is very good at chess, he plays since kid, he stubbornly practiced to win against his sister and also he is your general. Unless you are role-playing as chess genius too, I don't really see how anyone can be better than him in chess. It's the cards he has problems with and that also tells a lot about his personality and it's a characteristic he shares with Josephine. Josephine - a diplomat, is good at cards, he - a general, is good at chess.

Bah, I don't think I ever got that.

Good point, never really looked at it that way before esp with comparison to Josie being good at cards

That's great! I don't remember him talking about the cheating, I must not have chosen that option oops. I did pick up on his tone when you play fair, but I was too baffled to think that he was actually letting me win. Commander, you sneaky thing. And that's a really nice comparison between Josephine/cards and Cullen/chess, I like it a lot.

That leaves Leliana.... maybe she's good at... darts?

Yes. Isn't that how you play darts?
Well, yes, but some people have some really bizarre ideas about how it's played, so I'm just checking.

Yes I know. I suggested it once at a party and someone brought out this weird round target. I don't know what that was about.

It says a lot about him, I think, that he enjoys spending time with the Inquisitor enough to let them win if they play fair (especially since he seems pretty competitive) but he'll gleefully trounce them (and call them out!) if they break the rules.

I wonder do you get the same scene with a male Inquisitor? I haven't seen any videos with a male Inquisitor on this scene, is it romance specific?

Fourth option: if you are flirting with him, it's like it doesn't even matter who won, as long as you can spend time together again.

Without the implication of the romance it can be seen as him simply liking the quiet time where he can relax.

You might want to add Solas and Iron Bull into your equation.
