Without the implication of the romance it can be seen as him simply liking the quiet time where he can relax.

And assessing the Inq's personality/play style and ability at chess.  ;)

You might want to add Solas and Iron Bull into your equation.

Ok, now I want a game of Solas vs. Traynor. Although I doubt modern PCs have enough computing power for BioWare to implement that match.

I do not think the scene comes across as Cullen letting you win. I think it depends on how you envision your Inquisitor.

Everyone's better than Shepard btw.. I don't think it would be possible to win against Solas if he's commited to a game. He's Fen'Harel after all, not only an immortal but the incarnation of trickery on top of it. If the legends hold some truth at least.

You can win at Wicked Grace Game because you roleplay as being shrew too.

I don't know, however I look at it, I find it very telling that you only lose if you cheat.

edit: I mean it from a neutral perspective, if you just go along the story without roleplaying particular traits. Of course I'm not say that roleplaying them is wrong way to go about it.

I got it as male quizzy.

Question: when you let him win as a male quizzy, what was his reply? In elven/human girl version if you flirt with him,  the quizzy will say "luck has favoured you today" and he'll reply "so it has", which gives the idea that he might mean not only about the chess game but also about the girl letting him win

Cullen vs Solas --> I'm betting good money Solas win.

Remember the Protagonist is perfect. Winning at chess on the first go is just par for the course in a Bioware game.

Yep, same here. I still would love to see a Cullen vs IB match, they are both stubborn and cocky, but due to different profession I bet they have different approach in the game.

You win only if you romance Josie because she gives you good cards: isn't that so?

It's all in her line. I can't recall it now but its something like "I knew you could do it, love!"

It's really endearing.

But it is also just implied, you can role-play however you want it.

With Cullen you can't test this in the same way, because the reason is not romantic (however it can be seen as such when in romance because of how it's worded). I'm saying that from the clues that we are given, he lets you win, especially if you consider his competitive nature and how he doesn't even comment at you winning, but jumps at the opportunity to tease you when you cheat. He totally knows that you let him win.

I don't really see how anyone can be better than him in chess. It's the cards he has problems with and that also tells a lot about his personality and it's a characteristic he shares with Josephine. Josephine - a diplomat, is good at cards, he - a general, is good at chess.

And here I thought my quiz was a chess playing card shark world saving prodigy! Nah, I figured Josephine let me win wicked grace but Cullen took a chess dive?

It's almost as if everyone in Skyhold just stroking the inquisitor's ego....

Imagine if the Inquisitor throws a tantrum over a card/chess game and leaves? What will happen to the inquisition then?

I only played human/elf girls however so I can't say otherwise how it turns for guys.

Of course, your inquisitor can happily ignore that she lets you win, but you can't win if you aren't in romance with her, as far as I know, so as players we have proof enough that you can win only if she lets you.
With Cullen we don't have that proof, or so I think.

Scene with Cullen: he'll come & coax you to be back. probably bringing the board & pieces with him to "let you win".

That smirk of him & asking for replay when you win is proof enough in my headcannon

Yes, because Josephine lets you win because "love", Cullen lets you win because "relax time".

He takes pride in being good at chest, he worked hard on it, yet not a single "wow, nice game!"  or "let's rematch", nothing? His "We should try and play again sometime" comes off rather soft, although maybe you can read it as "I will win next time".

I just think that Josephine was much upfront with it, while Cullen is more subtle, maybe because as a general he has your pride to consider, maybe because of something else.

I like to speculate about character's intend and analyze them (I think that's obvious) but one thing I've noticed and love about DAI is that with each dialogue option you choose you not only define your character, but also the characters around you.

How the heck does that imply he let you win? Competition can be good-natured, and not everyone is a bad loser like Dorian.

Also, he comes across as being good at the game, but he's not the type to have dedicated his life to it, so you don't have to be world-class to win against him.

I said that it was my headcannon & a discussion of "personal interpretations" in another thread (I remember ThreeF being there).

In my personal interpretation of my very own PT (where both my Inkies had flirted & interested with him), that was an attempt of him flirting at her. Letting her win to ask her for a replay. It's actually that smirk when he said those line that do the work on me :P

It can be very different in other people's interpretation.

Ah, I see. Yes, it is a possible interpretation based on how you envision your character. I just don't think the game attempts to establish a canon about how good or bad our Inquisitor is at chess. Not the way ME attempted to canonize a very moderate IQ for Shepard.

BTW, do we know what that game is called in-world? It has a hexagonal board and different pieces, so it should really have its own name.

Yeah, it's still possible that the Inquisitor is simply better than him at Chess

The thing I want to know is, whether he'll do exactly the same lines & same expressions if he plays with a male Inquisitor or female qunaris & dwarves. I read someone saying that the line's slightly different & hence it must imply him trying to flirt at her.

Can't find any video of male quizzy or lady dwarf or lady qunari playing with him, so I can't check (I only play female human/elf for... reason  )
