I've had some time to really get a feel for the whole farming for crafting schematics in the random loot table, and the current system is very lacking.
I have a few ideas here, one I have already posted before, but not as a possible solution to anything.
first, allow schematics recovered by any single character to be available to new characters attached to an account or computer/console/etc, perhaps by adding a chest in skyhold's undercroft scripted to fill it with the required designs (assuming something like this can be done easily), perhaps not even using new characters as a prerequisite, just access to skyhold.
second option, bring in a "new game +" feature
add higher level enemies, maybe a second skillbar so leveling will serve a purpose. maybe a higher equipment & material tier/s as well. having the ability to playthrough the game again with the leveled character & equipment and items we've spent countless ours trying to create or gather would make farming for schematics seem a little less fruitless.
third idea, not really the same league as the others...
I've noticed a lot of the lower end armors and a few weapons looked a bit more interesting then higher level ones, like the free army armors, or the adventurer sets for instance, though they are rendered fairly useless, very quickly as higher tier schematics become available. what if there was a specialized armor &, or weapon smith scattered around somewhere, someone who could alter the material slots on the schematics as you're crafting gear, the simpler the gear, the more you can do with it? at first you can only move the numbers around a bit, like if you wanted a higher armor value you could reduce the material value of the utility slot and add it to the base slot to improve the armor rating, taking a hit to the utility value of your new gear in exchange. as the game progresses, you get access to wartable missions that will improve your smith's ability to alter weapons or armor, and with each research mission completed you get freebees to place on your gear, increase the materials on slots without sacrificing other attributes at a set amount per tier, per mission competed. at more advanced levels you can alter material slots, changing leather to cloth, or utility slots to offensive slots or so on, not sure how workable that is with the current system, and is likely kind of far out there, but it's an idea.
that's all I have atm.

The loot model is lacking, the stores are behind, the specialists offer nothing -these areas need an overhaul along with event timing, etc.

honestly, I can't think of anything that doesn't need an overhaul... well, beyond "oh, look, shiny graphics".
