So basically, the TC just wants a different icon for flirting and initiating a romance? Because that's all I'm really getting from this topic.
Realistic Depiction of Homosexuality WTF? (Spoilers?)

I am not gay, so I may be wrong here. But I think gay people are people. Same as everyone else. With the same flaws too. So the best way to "show them" in games would be just to, you know, create a normal character that happens to be gay? I think Bioware did a good job of it in DA:I, really.

Anyway, I think the TC's point was that Dorian was not normal enough to be gay.
Which I don't get, because if we used that criterion to judge the quality of writing then everyone and everything will be perfect average = boring. Even more so than it is in DA:I with some of its prominent cast being excessively bland.

I could care less either way, but i am starting do get a bit annoyed with the constant influence that "political correctness" has on a video game! The option to be straight or gay, awesome.. everyones happy.. But when you break down DA:I, it really just looks like the developers went down a checklist to appease the liberal, socialist board of directors! Female positions of power, check.. Every possible gay, and/or lesbian romance options, check.. make sure we depict every race in every possible variation of poor, middle-class, and rich, check.. Be sure to spew hate at the "1%'ers", check (Sera)! Make one NPC who is a noble, help the poor, but make him so ashamed of his lineage, and heritage that he hides the fact that hes nobility, check!
I dont know about yo-u guys, but i play games to ESCAPE the terrible state of our world, to emerse myself in fantasy. Not to just go play real life politics that make everyday a stress-fest! As i said, i dont mind developing for the sake of the playerbase, but when it feels like a deliberate intervening by an overbearing political intrusion, its very much pulls away from an enjoyable experience!

I seriously don't understand your complaint. You want a mature story driven RPG that has no connection to real world issues? I honestly don't know what that would even look like.

Different kinds of fantasy, out there. DA has always had lots of "real world issues".

I had no trouble with how the relationships panned out other than one fact. You're forced to initiate every conversation... every encounter. I literally come back from the dead twice in battle... killed 2 dragons been away for virtually weeks and Josephine has to be pried from her desk to even greet me upon my return. I mean nothing says love like obligating them to walk a few hundred yards to a park for 30 seconds. I was moved. I don't think that's out of line... A little "hey there dragon slayer, love you long time"
As for the homosexual thing, I have some impeccable gaydar in real life even as a hetero. I think Allister was practically on parade so he's got a few squires in tow you can count on that. Where Solas might have seemed gay to most, a trained eye knows his A-sexual indifference from a mile away. Years of work made him not give 2 ****s. Leliana was the only surprise.... mostly because I already hit that, yeah. Cassandra did a 180 for me. Story and her relentless professional life was bringing me down. That whole Varric thing made me laugh, just some of her facial expressions oh man that lifted 3,000lbs off of my shoulders and I needed it at about 200 hours in.

See? And if Alistair has chosen something a little less phallic (like a metal fence, perhaps?), I wouldn't have had a momentary, glitched ping on my 'dar.

In Haven there is one time where Josephine calls out to you as you walk in saying something like " might I have a moment of your time? " I think that sort of thing could have been implemented more with her and other characters.

That would work for me.
If there's no romance icon, I usually go for the funny quip response, which is usually the middle-right one.
Right on. I'm so tired of this trend of using "rape" as a way to make a person's argument sound powerful.
I'm sorry...? I guess I could have simply said "Unwilling make-out session that made me feel violated because I'm kind of invested in my character."
Disclaimer: I did not read all of the previous posts, just the first few.
I agree that there should be a bit more choice as far as a gay KISA (see thread http://forum.bioware...hl= gay knight it's been heavily discussed though I didn't participate.) But as far as the interaction and romancing scripts go, it sounds like the tactics are not only typical of the genders (i.e. females requiring more work to get with and males being pretty easy to get into bed) and also typical of the characters' personalities and backgrounds.
Looking at Zevran, to put it quite simply, he's generally a **** of a man. He even says so, many times in conversation. Sex is fairly casual.
With Fenris, he's very reserved and uncertain.
With Anders, he's just a big old mess in DA2, there's a lot more going on in his head than making out with Hawke.
For Bull, sex is also casual, Qunari and such.
For Dorian, he states himself in game that he never gave thought to sex being more than casual with another man.
I can't comment on the female relationships, since I don't really care all that much. But in my own experience as a gay man, what Dragon Age has presented has been fairly accurate in depiction in my opinion.
I caught all of that from the other characters except for Dorian, honestly. Iron Bulls says, and I believe I quote, "It's pretty easy. Sometimes you're there for hours, and some times *clicks his mouth* you're just in and out."
But... I guess I didn't know that that's how Dorian perceived the relationship. Now I feel so used. xD
There is no realistic depiction of any group in DA universe simply because there are not enough characters to portrait it.
One could argue that these are not realistic, normal or even desirable characteristics/pattern, btw.
I'm aware of that, I was merely pointing out that there was a pattern with the straight romances.
Anywho... thanks for engaging me. I will have to check out that other post. ![]()

I'd be great if it could be implemented more, but NPC are pestering you quite a bit while you run in Hinterlands, basically every quest giver stars the conversation with you instead of other way around, and Mother G starts the conversation about Dorian when you run past her in Skyhold.

Excellent points. Forgot about Mother Giselle and other random NPC's. I was just thinking mostly of the inner circle.

Out of curiosity, have you finished the Dorian romance arc yet? Because this is actually discussed as part of the romance story. You and he have a discussion about what you want out of the relationship and he makes it clear that he was thinking of it as a casual thing. You can agree, you can break up with him, or you can challenge him that it's more serious and that influences the outcome of the story.

A shorter version would be "forced kiss"? Or "mouth molestation"? I dunno. The word rape is just really flung about a lot in these forums carelessly and I guess it just bothers me. I know I'm not the only one but I'm probably in the minority. I don't get upset about use of language, usually, but that word in particular grinds my gears. It's likely a personal problem.

Ah... No, not yet. I've chosen to play the "straight man" so to speak, this time around. Next time, though... I can follow through on my flirting. ![]()

Is cool. I think I'd prefer mouth molestation. xD I mean... It was only forced in the sense that it wasn't what I intended at all.
And no, being flirty does not mean I was "asking for it." :| "I like that you're gay" apparently translated to "It's go time" in Bioware-ese. Makes me wonder what their relationships are like... xD

I feel like if you are clicking the flirt icons, you are giving the other character permission to initiate something. Some romances are faster than others, but I definitely think something would be lost if the PC always made the first move.
