The Prima Guide has this as a follow up mission to investigating the strange chalk markings, but it has not come up in any of my three play throughs (on third one now.)  I know there is a bug with the Gift for Bianca mission, so unsure if:

This is bugged.

This was cut after the game guide was printed, but before game came out.  Since there seems to be some conversation and theories on who "those across the sea" are, and how they might relate to future games, this might make sense.

There is some other condition I have not met.  Since I only got the University of Orlais mission on my third play though and have NO idea what I did to get it, this also seems possible.

Anyone out there actually play that mission?

Thanks!

I've had a mission to investigate strange chalk markings, though I honestly don't remember the name. I saw it in both my playthroughts, and pretty early in the game too. Do you rush to be out of Haven as soon as possible? Maybe it's meant to show up only in the very first part of the game.

This is a follow up to the chalk markings one--I always get that one and complete it.  And I probably linger in The Hinterlands longer than many, so plenty of time to get to a certain level.  I think I was level 11 or 12 this last time when I made the move?

I have also wondered why I never got this mission in any of my four games, and I'm greatly bothered by that because I suspect it's connected to a missing Codex entry. I don't like missing Codex entries....

I got in my second playthrough, the mission is just off the coast of Ferelden nearish Orzammar, I'm pretty sure you can't get it once you leave Haven.

Not to question, but are you referring to "Upon the Waking Sea"?  That one I have gotten, but it is related to the exploration of Haven and search for early disciples of Andraste.

But if it the real one, huzzah!

That is the quest you get when you go after the Guardian.

The OP is referring to a different quest. It vanishes from the War Table if you don't complete it before leaving Haven

I don't remember the exact details but I had gone back and finished it once I realized I had missed it. Took the quickest options. To investigate the markings I remember I went with Leliana. In the end nothing became of it. She set up a dummy camp or something and the spy when she gets caught commits suicide by eating something. It isn't explained in any more detail.

I've tried going with both options (Leliana and Josephine, I think), and still have not received it in third PT.

But the fact that the U of Orlais quest seems to have some sort of odd requirement that I met w/o knowing makes me wonder if there is some trigger.  Maybe more perks in secrets?

I was thinking of the Guardian one the Chalkings one can be completed with Josephine she sends someone to talk to an aging expert and he reveals the meaning over tea and frilly little cakes.

I don't have the guide, so this is the first I've heard of this, but no, I have not seen this operation come up. Also, for some reason the first operation (Investigate the Strange Chalk Markings) disappears from the war table unless I do it the first time it comes up. Don't know why, but it's happened twice to me.

I know there is a bug with the Gift for Bianca mission

Wait, what's this Gift for Bianca mission?

Gift for Bianca gives you an upgrade for Varric's crossbow.  I had heard that there was a bug with the location of the mission, and in my second play through when I did a "mouse-over" (or the Xbox equivalent) it showed a second mission sharing the same space.  I did that one, but the first mission stayed there, completed, till the end of the game.

I am confused in general about why some missions disappear when does and others don't.  Not a huge issue, but it did get confusing at times.

It's a mysterious quest that (Leliana path) ends with a spy at a crossroads committing suicide and saying, "Glory to those across the seas," or a noble-lady recounting her bizarre meeting with an 'Antivan merchant' who warns her about exploring the ocean, as 'those across the seas will come soon enough'.

I doubt the glitched second mission would reveal anything substantial, but I still want to know. :(

yep, having this issue too... there are quite a few in the prima online guide that even they dont know how to get them....  the university of orlais or grand cleric iona being two...  also it mentions a war table mission about the town of serault... and two missions associated with it... the only requirement the guide says is to open up the hinterlands... yeah, have yet to even see it after 4 playthroughs...

Foreshadowing for Kossith invasion in DA4, I imagine.

A larger threat gives an excuse for the player to visit Par Vollen and Tevinter without the Qunari-Tevinter war getting in the way.

The Serault operations chain apparently depends on having played The Last Court before you imported your world state from the Keep. I have no words to express how annoying I find that, since I have no way to set the marker in my existing playthroughs. there's not even a DA Keep parameter for it that you can change yet.

I hate this. Really hate. They give us the DA Keep so we can adjust our world states and don't need to replay DAO for the umpteenth time to make a minor adjustment, and then make content dependent on a different game regardless.

Did I say I hate this?

I've gotten the Grand Cleric Iona one, at least in my latest (3rd) play-through with a dwarf rogue Inky.  Can't remember if I saw it in the previous play-throughs, though, and couldn't tell you want triggered it.

I actually had no idea there was meant to be a follow up mission! Hopefully it's bugged and can therefor be patched, 'those across the sea' have me intrigued as well

Me, too.  Wish there was a better sense of what triggered what.  I've made some different choices with my third Inquisitor, but no idea why this one got the University of Orlais mission, not the other 2.

University of Orlais has very small window it opens after Mages/Templars quest but it becomes unavailable after you close the breech, maybe you just didn't noticed it?

Weren't the Qunari originally from another continent? I seem to recall Iron Bull discussing that the Qunari left their homeland for some reason (he didn't know) and that he doubted those they left behind, the Kossith, would resemble the Qunari very much. Maybe it has something to do with that? Or I'm just projecting...I'd love to explore further in Thedas

Possibly in my first play through, but in my second I used the guide and was looking for missions after everything.

I think that is the possibility that has everyone intrigued.  Since there are lots of theories about DA 4 based on codex entries (Seheron, mysterious pyramids, etc) I am starting to think that maybe they cut this one because it gave away too much, or made the "ones across the sea" seem to important?

Well World of Thedas vol. 2 is apparently going to show us lands outside of Thedas so we might get some more information. Dragon Age Akavir?

Yah he was indeed not sure other than the reason they left was the Qunari were either fleeing or were forced out by the Kossith.

I have the collector's edition guide and there is alot of content cut and my fav is a inquisition perk Deeds Renown - it basically gives you more power for completed task lol good thing it didnt make it to the game, i had like 400+ power at the end to do nothing with

The chalk markings operation dissapeared on me twice and the first time was when i was looking at the war table screen, i thought that maybe its timed and would have to do it right away
