First off, this is my first post, but I have been a long time lurker and have kept up with most if not all threads on this forum as well as the equivalent reddit forum, so please don't judge me based on post count.

I noticed some of the DOT abilities are not behaving the way their description describes they should be (ex: Toxic cloud hitting harder than 15% damage per second and proccing every 2 seconds).  This led me to give Immolate a quick and dirty test.

Immolate - X% damage per second for 8 seconds.  But I noticed the damage procs every 2 seconds.  I figured maybe the damage procs will occur over a longer time to account for the 2 second interval to give the same damage output, but this is not the case.  Instead of damaging for 8 seconds, it damaged for 11 seconds, thus giving 6 distinct damage procs.  I noticed the 6 distinct damage procs over 11 seconds occur consistently for all enemy factions.  Then I suspected maybe the X% damage is hitting twice as hard to account for the 2 second proc, but again, this is not the case.  Any ideas what's actually happening or maybe just a bug?

I'm now convinced most DOT abilities are not what they say they are (or maybe I'm just misunderstanding the tool tip), thus, in the case of immolate, decreasing the total damage output.  Has anyone thoroughly tested DOT abilities in this way?

Or maybe penguin can make a video about this! :D

If someone were to test the immolate ability, I would like to know that if someone was to use the staff that procs Immolate, would spending points in the elementalists skill tree increase the effectiveness of the staffs proc?

Thank you.

Welcome to the forum!

I haven't done any extensive tests myself, but there has been quite a few discussions on DoTs:

Necro DoTs(SP): http://forum.bioware...ng-necromancer/

Poison DoT(MP): http://forum.bioware...-do-they-stack/
Burning DoT(MP): http://forum.bioware...ng-as-intended/

Bleeding is not a DoT(SP): http://forum.bioware...d-what-it-does/

Earthshaking Strike (SP): http://forum.bioware...rk-compilation/

Reports of Shattered Ground upgrade actually doing 200% damage per second for 8 seconds (a massive amount given 2H weapon damage).

I swear I also saw reports that toxic cloud hits a lot harder, but I can't find the source any more =(

Edit: Found the source: http://www.reddit.co...perilous_guide/

Ps: I take no credit from any of these tests listed above.

I'd be shocked if this game was finished in its life cycle.  Bleeding?

As far as I'm concerned, any DOT that last more than 5 seconds is completely useless. Either the thing will be already dead or it's a boss and you get only 1 of those for the whole game... DOT is just a fancy way to say it doesn't do anything viable, no need to understand how it works...
