Just started the game - returning player form Origins. Am at the point where I am the "Wrath of Heaven" - reach the forward camp. I cannto just talk to my companions which I used to be able to do.

 

Does this happen later the game? At a certain point? Or is conversation now only limited to generic locations at not off the fly in the field?

Conversations are generally camp-only (Haven at first, Skyhold later on). There is still banter of course.
