As the subject says, i'm having an unbearable problem and i'm at my wit's end.

Without boring everyone with a history of details, i've been having the same problem with Mass Effect 1 in the past as i am with Mass Effect 2 in the present. I play both through Steam, on PC (naturally). My rig is fairly "impressive", which is to say i've never had a problem playing ANY other game at any time, including more recent fare like Dragon Age: Origins, on ultra-high settings for hours at a time with no slow-down. I can even alt-tab and run multiple browser tabs with no slow down, etc etc. I'm just trying to illustrate that i believe the problem lies with ME and not with me...or, uh, my system.

Basically, i can play for maybe around 10-20 minutes at a time before the display turns black and all video crashes (though sound still plays in the background). I can't do much of anything at that point, save for a hard shut down by holding in my power button for a couple of seconds. This happens every time i play, without fail. As i mentioned above, i had the same problem with ME1.

The problem is, i can't seem to find ANY solution that works satisfactorily. I've downloaded the latest patch for my video card. I've downloaded countless applications designed to clean up my directory, clean out old drivers (though i'm somewhat reticent to mess around overmuch with it, knowing i'm not a great enough hand with computers to screw around safely), and even Rivatuner to see if there was some problem with overclocking (long story short, see below*). Of course, i didn't mess around with that any more than i did with Driversweeper, but that's neither here nor there.

Basically, i'm feeling a little...upset, which is a charitable word. But like many, i've waited some time for this game, passed my few hours before unlock with bated breath, and then i'm finally psyched to spend my day off playing Mass Effect 2...for 15 minutes at a time. So, i've spent the last four hours with my thumb inserted somewhere wishing i could play and staring at a black screen.

Is there anyone that can help me out, here?

*My computer came factory overclocked, which basically meant every time i did anything involving a video game i'd get the same black screen display error i'm receiving now, though sometimes it'd resolve itself (only to crash again shortly after). That was quickly taken care of, and i haven't had an issue since, unless i'm playing Mass Effect 1 or 2.  I have no problem buying a new video card, if i have to, but i just want a solution that will work.

If anyone would like a DxDiag file, just ask. This is my rig. Video card is NVIDIA 9800 GT (replacing the original that was screwed up from the overclocking), though, with the latest driver (196.21).

HELP ME! I WANT TO SAVE THE GALAXY!

I have the same problem since I upgraded my video card to a Radeon HD 5850, my screen will go black/gray and I have to power button. Happens randomly. I figured that I had too aggressive of an over clock (yet Crysis runs fine on high). After digging around on the Steam forums I came to the conclusion that it is the Steam overlay messing up.

I haven't gotten home from work, so I hope this works with ME2...

I made a shortcut straight to the games *.exe and launched the game outside of steam. It fixed my problems I was having with Dirt2. I'm hoping I can do this with ME2 because I'm going to be pissed when I get home if it keeps crashing.

Give it a shot, it's worth a try (if our issues are related).

Can anyone confirm that you can launch ME2 on its own and not from the steam -> games menu?

Glad i'm not the only one, but still upset that this plagues other gamers.

derigortron, i'm going to give that a shot now and see where it gets me. In the meantime, anyone else have some insight?

Well, i decided to try an old remedy i'd heard about some time ago regarding this specific problem and downgraded to some old drivers (NVIDIA drivers 178.xx or something). I'll keep everyone updated.

Again, in the meantime, anyone have any other solutions?

Still having trouble, still frustrated. I understand everyone is having problems of their own, but are we such a minority that no one else even knows about it, let alone has a solution?

Ok, I tried making shortcuts straight to the EXE and to the Launcher EXE but it keeps wanting to launch through steam. So I went into the steam settings and disabled the In-game community (all the popup crap). So far, so good.

Might be worth a shot on your end.

I'm having the exact same problem and my computer is well above the recommended system requirements.  I hope i didn't just waste 60 bucks.

I also have a GeForce 8800GT and my computer Crashes completely, immediately when I start the game. To make matters worse when I tried to update the driver my computer's display was failing (even on the manufacturer start up screen) so bad I almost lost my comp completely. I have no idea what to do now...

Well, driver downgrade was a total bust. Seemed like it was working, but i still can't seem to get past 25 minutes or so before a crash. I'm now clearing out the drivers and reinstalling the latest.

derigortron, i'll give that a try. It gave me the same trouble while trying a Steam-free shortcut, but i'll try disabling IGC.

Anyone else have any luck with anything? You're not alone!

I have the same issue on ME1 as the OP describes. I have a top of the line rig and play on a very large Monitor with a high resolution, 2560x1600. I have found that playing windowed has no issues and honestly thought it was an overheating issue on the Card (as its Summer here and damn hot); I run, nVidia 295GTX.

The research I have done is often 'similar but not the same' as this issue, as usually others have crashes after losing video.

I have had the same problem with mass effect One and Two on the pc. I have an Ati 4870 so far i have the fan running at 70%. I get to play ME2 about 30 mins before the black screen crash hits.

I also used to think it was an overheating issue, but couldn't for the life of me understand why it only happened with ME (and in this case, ME2) and NO other games or programs cause this issue. Also, it's winter here and i tend to keep my home pretty brisk, regardless. I don't rule anything out at this point, though. I'll give a windowed playtest a shot and see how that helps,

Honestly, at this point (having only gotten to play maybe a total of two full hours on my only day off this week) i just want a solution. Even if it means i have to buy a new video card, just tell me what i need to do to ensure this game plays flawlessly and without error. Pretty please?

Good luck to anyone else with this problem. If you find any solutions, let us know.

Same deal's happening with me, I updated my HD sound drivers and it went from a complete shut down of the computer after 20 - 30 minutes of play, onto a CTD after 10 - 20 minutes... the first stint it went flawless for almost 4 hours until it shut down... and well.. no dice. DXdiag info :

Processor: Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.4GHz

Memory: 4096MB RAM

Available OS Memory: 3326MB RAM

Page File: 1247MB used, 5403MB available

Windows Dir: C:\\Windows

DirectX Version: DirectX 11

DX Setup Parameters: Not found

User DPI Setting: Using System DPI

System DPI Setting: 96 DPI (100 percent)

DWM DPI Scaling: Disabled

Also running an ATI 4850. I'll give the window'd test a try also and see what the deal is.

PS This would be the time Bioware Tech Support should be pitching ideas... just saying.

I kinda have the same problem i too have a Nvidia GeForce 8800GT card SLI but i managed to avoid the crash when i did an "renegade" dialogue interrupt and the game continued on normal from the point where i would have normally crashed. I went back and experiemented and tried the paragon dialogue interrupt again and the black screen crash happened in the very last scene. this happened to me at the end of the "pilgrim progress" mission

Same thing happens for me, 5 to 10 minutes and I get the windows 7 error message stating ME2 had to shut down.

AMD 810, 4 gb ram, GTX275.

Yea I get the same problem. I cant even play for 30 mins before the crash. And I have to hard reset my computer every single time. Its really annoying cause I want to play ME2, and I dont have an XBOX 360 so this PC version is my only hope.

I'm having... sort of the same problem. For me, it's happening in 1 particular place, not after 30 minutes or so.

It happens in the tutorial level. When you go to hack the first door that needs hacked. Get a black screen with sound in the background a few seconds into the hack. I've reloaded 3 times and same thing happens every time.

Had no problem with ME1 though.

So maybe it's not quite the same problem... but it's a black screen and a hard reboot none the less.

Same issue here... I managed to get through the game once with only 2-3 such crashes, but it's getting more frequent now.

ok so windowing makes no difference, however I noticed my video card going up to degrees of about 120c before the crash. so taking apart my ENTIRE PC I reseated everything applied new Thermo-compound and dropped my Idle temps from 65-40c on the GPU and from 30-20c on the CPU going to test ME2 and see if that was my issue.. From what I can tell this game just seems to be video demanding, even Crysis Warhead ran find earlier today.

Changing processor affinity has fixed this for me. The problem persisted through different graphics cards and PSU. Changing graphics settings also did not effect the problem. I have a Core 2 Duo e8400 c0. The same exact behavior is in Mass Effect 1 and 2 and to fix it, open up task manageer with the game running, right click on the mass effect process, and click "Set Affinity...". Then just select one of your cores. Hope this helps some of you as I went through hours and hours of trying different things like everyone else probably has.

I've tried the disabling steam interface trick with no success. Going for the affinity thing next.
